My vote goes to Shaft, mainly for the cool Isaac Hayes soundtrack and for the scene where snooker legend Steve Davis finally meets his match. Wink

While none of these movies would be considered great cinematography achievements, 'Cotton Comes to Harlem' is clearly the cream of the crop here.  The movie was adopted from a series of books known as The Harlem Detective series.  The author was Chester Himes an award-winning writer.  It had a semi decent plot, two above average performances from the leads (even their names were catchy - "Coffin Ed" Johnson and "Gravedigger" Jones).  It's not The Godfather but it's watchable.

Hi,

Hard to say something here. both "Shaft" and "Superfly" got a lot of commercial attention likely for its music, but as films, I'm not sure they were that great, but I have to see them again, as I am not even sure why I would say that now.

it was an interesting time, as black music had exploded, and it was about time that it did in film as well, although it would be harder in film, since the majority of studios were owned by the same interest that also spent their time making sure that no black music was provided either, not to mention that they just about owned all the abilities and rights for all music in the earlier days ... which helped them make their stars sing, so the money stayed home, and there would not be competition.

I like the films that the Peebles family put together over the years, and Mario's "Posse" is an exceptional film with very good performances, that sadly will never get an audience, like some of these did. The father is on the history of black film, in many books for his efforts, btw, and from a directing perspective, deservedly so, although I think there are about 5 or 6 films in this list I have not seen and will try to catch up on.

^ Many of these blaxploitation movies are just as well-known for their supercool soul soundtracks as the movies themselves. For instance:- Across 110th Street (J.J. Johnson & Bobby Womack); Shaft (Isaac Hayes); Superfly (Curtis Mayfield): & Trouble Man (Marvin Gaye).... Across 110th Street is the film I really want to see though, so I'll just have to wait until it shows up on YouTube. In the meantime, I'll settle for the soundtrack. Smile

Hi,

I don't remember hearing this before, and what a nice recording and sound it is ... wonderful.

I'm not sure that the "music" was what brought all these films forward, as the industry had, by that time warmed up to black performers, however, the Academy would not really recognize them for some time yet, which tells you who "owned" things and kept the segregation alive.

I do think, and the books on black film suggest it, that it was going to happen any second, as soon as one of them took hold, and it may have been SHAFT, although that would say that nobody ever saw the Peebles film (Sweet Baddass ... ) or a lot of other history making films before these. 

In many ways, for me, this was the stuff that helped MAKE the Detroit sound huge and then some ... it validated all their black music and sound. Somehow, I think that mentioning both together makes more sense, since no one says that Detroit and the black music already around the country was "blaxploitation" unless we start thinking that the record producers themselves were the opposite of the white section, which you and I would shake our heads at! They were at a massive disadvantage and all of a sudden, they got through to the public and AM radio with various hits to the obvious disappointment of a lot of major record companies, and it got worse with FM Radio on the horizon, specially for "independents" and "imports", and then it all disappeared when the great corporate rape of American Radio took place and the independence of all radio stations was gone.

But it was too late. Great black performers had taken this to an even better, and higher level and then some and busted through too well. This time, though FILM was behind for some time!

^ I'm glad you liked the soundtrack to "Across 110th Street". The last movie in the poll - "Trouble Man" - is the only film that wasn't included in Video Hound's Guide to Groovy Movies, but it was worth watching just for the cool Marvin Gaye soundtrack alone. Thumbs Up

Sadly I couldn't find my favourite blaxploitation movie "Shaft" on YouTube. All I found were some old episodes of the much-derided game show "Shafted", presented by the perma-tanned former M.P. Robert Kilroy Silk, and if you don't remember him, then here he is on his mid-morning chat show "Kilroy" - or at least someone who looks very much like him. Tongue
