definitely Libre Service, hands down.

Watch, Gilmour, Expresso II, Cyclone, Wet Dreams and PDT are next.

But one can see why 78 is not that good: if three of my first seven are solo albums, I'd say that it is not a strong year.

BTW, I don't think the albums in the list of the first 78 poll is better. I can't remember what I voted in it.

My 78 list (in case there is a third poll)Evil SmileWink:

From the ten albums I know in the poll, Richard Wright's masterpiece wins it with a splash! Smile

and still no BJH XII to vote for! LOL

tbh, I've only heard 3 of these (I've probably also heard the TD, but being as it would have been some time ago and I can't remember it, I'll say 'no'), so I went for:

Yes > marginally over Renaissance > Jeff Wayne

BJH almost made it, but I found more interesting choices. Embarrassed

I also don't think that Tormato is better than A Song For All Seasons and War of the Worlds. Smile

Some while since I've heard all three, I have to be honest, so maybe some revision is needed on my part, but War of The Worlds had lost it's appeal by the time I'd reached 13, along with ELO's Out Of The Blue...

I was born in 1968 and always think of it as a sound track from my later childhood. I could say to you that I'll give it another listen sometime; my feelings will no doubt have been moderated with the passage of time (every so often, I say this about the early 'Sky' albums), but in truth I doubt whether I will, purely because there is just SO much good music out there which continues to be produced unabated and only so many hours in a lifetime... Smile

true, but there are albums that never get old and there's always pleasure getting back to them, plus there's also the nostalgia factor that is a reason to get back to certain albums. Smile

Gilmour's debut for me, the best solo album he has released.

I went with Gong's Expresso II - a fine, underrated album followed by Hackett (less consistent).

While here, one omission from what was arguably the last year of classic prog - Art Bears' 'Hopes and Fears'.  ELP's much maligned (at the time) 'Love Beach' has been reassessed more kindly and the cover is a good example of post-modern irony...

No omission, National Health's 'Of Queues and Cures' is in the first poll, link in the OP.

I don't listen to Art Bears, that's why it's not in the poll.

ELP's Love Beach is not an omission either, I did not even consider it for the poll, I did think of Budgie, BJH, Queen and Dire Straits, but not ELP for 1978.

Love Beach went even more downhill for me when someone mentioned the atrocious lyrics on some songs on the album. And he was right...

Excellent albums by: Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Gong, David Gilmour, Manfred Mann's Earth Band, Renaissance

Watch already appears on the first list and I voted for it there if I'm not mistaken. Out of the others I'd probably rate Kraftwerk and Renaissance slightly above the other three. Vote for The Man Machine.

Gentlemen.... I've only heard 3 myself! I'm not sure whether David is saying that he doesn't know these albums or has heard and doesn't like any... either way, there is ample opportunity for both of us to extend our 1978 knowledge and musical palettes in the near future...  Cool

Comparatively to 77 & 79 and the ones prior to it as well, 78 is relatively poor (IMHO), but if course, 78 is better than any year of the 80's, 90's, 00's & 10's.

My record collection tells me 1980 and 1981 are two of my favorite years in music. A little slim om quality jazz and "regular prog" perhaps, but hundreds of wonderful albums in all styles and genres.

I'd tell you that until 83/4, there 's still a bunch of good albums out (if you care to look in RIO/Avant), but every new year less so than the preceding one. That's all music forms considered together (even 80's jazz is poor).
From 85 until 90, I wouldn't be able to give you more than 5.

Well you've just told me you dislike 25 albums from my poll. And yet you get mad at me.
Good one... Ouch

How about we don't interact with each other? Tongue

so you attack me (again) and then tell me to not interact with you. Confused
I was already trying to do that believe it or not, but you seem to like to provoke me. (And not only me from what I've seen)

I think it was a good year, I like a lot of albums from 1978, hence the poll title.

We don't seem to disagree on much and I care to look in RIO/Avant (and outside of the anglosphere + all the great music with little or no relation to prog) - exept that I don't see or hear any decline in the quality of music 78-79/80-81. Both Jazz and Prog Rock was in better shape in 1972 but not so much in 1978 or 1979.

Yes, but your opinion is wrong again. Tongue The 10's had some of the best music ever, and 2019 was the zenith of prog releases.

Excellent stuff! And all in an evening's work! Never let it be said that PA isn't educational... LOL

Your knowledge of Prog from 1978 easily exceeds mine, now... Clap

If somebody's looking for a kind of objective (intersubjective) answer, I'll recommend to look at my top 160 all-time based on all the ratings on RYM and PA. Big smile

Yes, 1978 was a very good year for prog, despite what others may say. I like all ten of the albums in the poll that I've listened to so far, and there's a good chance I'd like the other fifteen albums in the poll too. Thumbs Up

Here's the 10 albums I know and love. Well, maybe not love in the case of Tormato. Tongue

UK - UK
Steve Hackett - Please Don't Touch
Tangerine Dream - Cyclone
Richard Wright - Wet Dream
Pierre Moerlen's Gong - Expresso II
Visitor 2035 - Visitor 2035
David Gilmour - David Gilmour
Jeff Wayne - War of the Worlds
Renaissance - A Song for All Seasons
YES - Tormato (Yes, really!) Embarrassed

I vote for TD, but I could choose UK and Manfred Mann as well. Gilmour's solo debut is also fine.
Tormato is mediocre and I dislike War of the Worlds.

While I'm more of a picky chap, which on the other hand doesn't mean that I can't appreciate some music, you don't - as we know it. Smile
