I don't recall seeing this video in 2019 or 2020, could have missed it but don't think so. Anyhow, great discussion around recording music, and how each one approaches the craft. Especially now with the digital age of recording and their feelings about analog recording of yesteryear.
Alan Parson clearly one of the great engineers of our time, creating one of the most dynamic and pretty much perfect recordings with Dark Side Of the Moon and so many others including his own projects.

Shot in SW's house starting off in his music room where he has his fairly large collection of LP records that he is well known for.

If I get it right, Alan refers to his last studio album (The Secret) as released some months ago, so this must be 2019 or early 2020 footage.

Correct, as well SW is talking about TFB as his different style album he is working on. Just strange that this video was recorded in 2019 but just released now for Munich 2022.

I agree with Alan. 5.1 mixes are better than stereo, and digital recordings will soon be better than analog.

Never in this video did Alan say digital was bad. Never did he say analog was better. He uses the tools available to him at the time to make the best sounding record he can. He does not want to use a 24 track Studer tape machine anymore. He also mentioned he appreciated the vinyl revival, but not for sonics. Only because people sit down and listen to a whole side without interruptions. They also do that with 5.1 mixes. Wink

Well I think that 5.1 for music is a very niche market, 5.1 has been around for a long time and still only for movies. I suspect Atmos will not gain any momentum for music either, only HT.

I've said a million times, recording in the digital domain is probably the best to capture the whole experience. But once that is done what we as consumers end up listening to is slightly better than just fine, regarding CDs and hi-rez files. That krapp is so compressed it's not even funny anymore, there are no dynamics, the sound is lifeless and it is still going on. Read the Kevin Gray interview I posted also....

Digital noise and artifacts also exist, computer processors are only now able to keep up with a 192khz/24bit file. Why engineers continue to add tons of compression and brick walling a digital file/CD is beyond me, it truly sounds horrible.....
