Recent discussions in another thread has revealed Psychedelic Paul's dislike for music in the RIO/Avant-Prog sub-genre. But the RIO/Avant-Prog sub-genre has a wide variety of music. For example, Yowie - Synchromysticism is nothing like Fred Frith - Gravity and The Residents - Duck Stab is nothing like Atomic Ape - Swarm. Of course, none of these are anything like Renaissance - Scheherazade And Other Stories, but surely there is RIO/Avant-Prog music that, while still qualifying as RIO/Avant-Prog, is still fairly accessible. I've already mentioned two that I think are fairly accessible:

Fred Frith - Gravity
Atomic Ape - Swarm

What others do you think are there?

I think that U Totem's self-titled could appeal to quite a few into Symphonic Prog.

And some of my favourite RIO/Avant I find can be both weird and accessible: News From Babel, Art Bears, Slapp Happy, Samla Mammas Manna, some Henry Cow, some The Residents....

One I would like to mention is Wapassou (In PA in RIO/Avant, I might have gone with Eclectic)

There are lot of acts not included in RIO/Avant here that have those avant qualities that could be accessible to ye average Prog fan (if there is such a thing). Avant Prog is very diverse and has no clear boundaries, and even RIO, which is more of a movement and ones that played festivals is diverse.

Do you mean artists that put out both weird albums and accessible albums?

Fred Frith comes to mind. I have the accessible Gravity and the somewhat less accessible Speechless.

^ I mean that they can be both weird and accessible at the same time*, but of course there are many diverse ones who might put out a weird album and then a different accessible one, or on one album it might have a weird songs and a different accessible song. I label albums and tracks, not artists so much (of course some are part of music and movements, like RIO, and are most associated with certain styles). An act (band/artist) might put out an avant prog album and then the next is primarily yacht rock, for instance, but then I would consider the yachy rock album if not avant yacht rock to be that relevant to this even if the artist is often labeled Avant Prog.

* of course what is accessible depends on the listener, and this can be true of what is considered weird too. Sometimes weird just means unfamiliar (like Chinese opera might be weird to the average Nashville raised country and western music fan even if the music is not inherently weird -- intended to be bizarre).

"Weird" and "accessible"? I think Ahvak got pretty close. One of the best avant prog albums of the 2000s.

Some of Frank Zappa, Mike Keneally, and French TV is accessible. Some could have even been pop hits.

I wish that I'd mentioned Aranis.

That said, if you're the kind of Progger hoping that this will sound akin to the love child of James LaBrie and Neal Morse, then you are likely to be disappointed.

Cheer-Accident is one of a different ilk that could work (depending on the track). Thinking Plague's A History Of Madness is quite accessible, and not that weird as I recall.

And Factor Burzaco's debut as I recall (quirky, though).

At least we share a liking for a couple of weird offbeat albums. Namely, Comus - First Utterance and The Wicker Man soundtrack. In fact, I bought The Wicker Man CD from Oxfam last Monday, but opened the CD jewel case upon leaving the store, only to find the CD had escaped! Cry

Yep.  As I expect you know, The Wicker Man's soundtrack was a favourite of Christopher Lee (and a favourite film of his).  He was sad that a song he had sung on was not used in the soundtrack as I recall from an interview.  I love lots of wyrd and wonderful folk music.  The Comus and Wicker Man are two I very much associate with each other, partially due to certain rather unsettling pagan qualities and both have a sort of folk horror vibe to them and can be rather fun (I feel like putting on the Wicker Man OST again, I really love that album).  Wonder what happened to the CD, hope no one burnt it.  Much rather it had escaped the cruel fate of the wicker man (used CDs should be safe, it's the unplayed "virgin" ones that one really has to worry about).

I, like Psychedelic Paul, am not a big fan of RIO/Avant, but I have a few albums which I find more "accessible" (to a non-fan)...

Pikapika Teart - Moonberry
Sonar (Switzerland) - <everything>
Stephen Thelen - <everything>
Taylor's Universe - Evidence
The Cellar and Point - ambit

Hi,

You have to stop mentioning others' preferences if you want to get PAST the idea of like/dislike. The appreciation of music to stand up as MUSIC, does not depend on Paul's likes/dislikes any more than it does yours or mine.

I'm OK with Paul's choices and ideas, but he is probably way too young and still tied to a top ten idea and concept about music, and not to the real meat that "makes the music" live in our hearts and minds. The day he finds that moment, he will probably go to the bathroom first and then come here and post something totally different ... and much more appreciative of the music out there.

However, considering how many different threads and bands he has posted information from about all their albums and links ... I would allow Paul his "eclectic", if not "eccentric" view for now.

But, why should his view of things interfere with yours?

I'm a proponent of the "deep throat" theory ... you know the real one that made it famous ... the church, because they could not keep their mouths shut!

Where do you stand? (... now you know why I don't like to reply to stuff that could otherwise be "negative" to progressive music!)

You do accept the principle that some avant is more 'accessible' than other avant, right?

"Sort of", the first album of Slapp Happy, is a bit less weird. here the title track:

but to be honest: "Avant/Rio" and "not weird" are almost antonyms. and why would anybody want "not weird Avant/RIO" in the first place? "weird" is the main allure of Avant/RIO

Hmmm... I don't see how the OP can be construed as being critical of Paul.

I don't think he is young. I think he is older than me (although I think I am a little bit younger than most people here).

This thread was inspired by Paul. I think it would be good if he could find some music in the RIO/Avant-Prog sub-genre that he likes. But if he can't, that would be ok. However, even without the inspiration of Paul, I think the topic could be interesting and useful to me and anyone else who likes their music to be moderately weird rather than not really music.

My appreciation of music actually does depend on my likes/dislikes. It's why I listen to music in the first place. I don't appreciate music as some grandiose artistic statement. That is not who I am.

Univers Zero (B) - Clivages (2010)

Even not being an Avant-Prog/RIO aficionado, I find this one quite accessible and enjoyable.

Great band, I have most of their stuff but not Avant Prog, it's darkwave / neo-folk

Mr. Bungle  (US) :  California  (1999)

Maybe the most popular Avant-Prog album - even RYM consider it to be Experimental Rock.

Huge fan of accessible RIO/Avant-prog, the only problem is what is accessible to me may not be considered 'accessible' to you. Some of my favorites were already mentioned in previous posts:
The Residents - for instance "Commercial Album", "Duck Stab/Buster & Glen"
Cheer-Accident- all albums released between 2009-2019 are pretty accessible IMO. My favorites are "Fear Draws Misfortune" and "Putting off death"
News From Babel- "Letters home"
Camberwell Now - "The Ghost Trade" plus 2 EPs released on 1 CD as "All's Well"
U Totem - s/t
Thinking Plague - "Extremis"
Officer! - Ossification, Mick's Hobbs project who was also in the band the Work with Tim Hodgkinson and Bill Gilonis.
Unrest, Work & Play - Informs
Art Bears - all 3 albums are very interesting musically, Dagmar's Krause vocals are acquired taste IMO. Don't get me wrong, she is praised by many fans as the greatest voice of RIO, but I find her English with heavy German accent annoying.

Taal  (F)  -  Skymind   (2002)

Taal is by PA classified as Eclectic Prog, but Skymind is on RYM mostly considered as Avant-Prog.
Anyway, very recommended for those who can be fond of Prog Metal, as it's much influenced by this sub-genre as well.
