I only know three albums in the poll (by Leaves' Eyes, Nightwish & Within Temptation), so I have a lot of listening to do before I cast my vote. Smile

Nightwish- Oceanborn

Rhapsody - Symphony of Enchanted Lands

Edenbridge - Arcana

All 3 for me, have them since were out, 20+ years ago, still love them and all 3 are the best from respective bands

My Vote: Leaves' Eyes: Vinland Saga... remains their best album; fabulous stage show with the home-made Viking long boat; pulled all the stops out for that...

My Runner Up: Epica: Consign To Oblivion

Sue's vote: Delain: April Rain

Sue's Runner Up: Within Temptation: Mother Earth

After second listening, highly recommended for those who can be fond of medieval music meeting Metal and other modern influences, without Pop though, moderately Symphonic, partly Gothic, quite Progressive and certainly complex - and still "a truly amazing achievement".

Thanks for the double recommendation, and rather handily, Aesma Daeva are at the beginning of the alphabet, so it'll be the first album I listen to in the poll. Thumbs Up

Nightwish is the only one on this list I've heard, so I guess I'll vote for that.

I have a strong feeling Therion's "brutal Swedish Death Metal" album won't be my cup of tea at all. Tongue

In the first of these two Symphonic Metal poll threads, I wrote about Aesma Daeva as a reply to Paul:
"I wonder why they're not more popular than it's the case, and one of the reasons might be (considering their first two albums) that their style is only little Pop-influenced comparing to the typical for Symphonic Metal. "
and I'd like to add here that I could imagine AD's second album to be one of the most experimenting if see it from the perspective of the Symphonic Metal sub-genre.

I'll let you know what I think to Aesma Daeva's second album when I eventually get around to listening to it, hopefully before the end of 2022 AD. Wink

That'll be interesting to hear. I'd say that The Eros of Frigid Beauty is a kind of Metal version of Gentle Giant. Big smile

I gave my vote to Serenity - Fallen Sanctuary (2008). This is some great symphonic power metal album. A hit and miss kind of music for me but this is quite good and the vocalist is excellent.

I know most of these bands and l listened to more than half of these albums. A few are really good, entertaining, some are nothing special.

Don't worry about the first 4 Therion albums; they become progressively more accomplished, but they just aren't your taste.... Theli & Vovin are masterpieces, however.

For me, my favourite Therion album is Secret of the Runes. I just find it thoroghly excellent. And I love Viking Mythology... but that alone wouldn't make me love the album if the music wasn't up to it.

If seen besides a couple of tracks (2 and 4), The Eros of Frigid Beauty is maybe closest to Avantgarde-Metal,
especially on the 65-minutes version, I've got, which seems to be the very first one, and then shortened to 55 minutes.
And if the rest of the tracks played in the order 6,7,5;;1,3 then I surely like it. Tongue

Anyway, I'm very glad adding this album to my rather small (30 albums) but very diverse Metal (not Hard Rock) collection, also because it represents other sub-genres than all those my other albums do. Tongue

Paul, did you ever do a Third album outing on this, or did it die from an acute lack of interest on the part of PA'ers?

Initially, I was planning to listen to all 25 Symphonic Metal albums in the third poll before posting it, but that could take awhile, so on second thoughts, I'll just listen to the first album in the poll (by Aesma Daeva) and catch up on the rest later. Smile

Six Progressive and Gothic Metal bands who were in the first Symphonic Metal poll but weren't included in this second poll for obvious reasons. Smile

Ayreon
Dimmu Borgir
Evanescence
Lacuna Coil
Stratovarius
Symphony X

And the six worthy Symphonic Metal replacements in this poll, with many thanks to Cristi. Thumbs Up

Gosh! I only just realised..... After posting the third Symphonic Metal poll recently I haven't even gotten around to listening to any of the albums in this second poll yet (apart from the three I already know by Leaves' Eyes, Nightwish & Within Temptation) so I have a lot of catching up to do, starting with Aesma Daeva - an American band, despite the Latin name.
This album's a real Beauty! Smile

Aall riight, Paul!! now you got me pleased. You surely know, I agree about this album, and this video is a treatment. I didn't imagine AD was so appealing live, as I've only seen a very nerdy photo of them and certainly not this video. Thank you very very much!! Thumbs UpThumbs UpThumbs Up

This could have easily been a 4-star album if it wasn't for the annoying cookie monster growling throughout the album, so for added Emphasis, let's hope we don't have to wait until after forever to finally say goodbye to the cookie monster growler on After Forever's albums! Dead

As with all of Aesma Daeva's distinctive albums, there's a stark contrast between their gentle melodic side and their heavy metal side, and that's part of the reason I like them - as well as the delightful charms of their beautiful singer of course. Smile

As I see it, The Eros of Frigid Beauty, is much more complex than that, and not particularly heavy, as the sound over all is quite synthetic/electronic - it's not as heavy as this live video suggest. Smile

Yes, the endless complexities of Aesma Daeva's albums sound like no other Symphonic Metal band I've ever heard before and I noticed that especially on their third album: The New Athens Ethos, which starts off heavily but later contains some beautiful melodic passages with the heavenly siren-song of soprano Melissa Ferlaak, who hails from Minnesota, USA, despite her Dutch name. Smile

Okay, now you made me curious about their third album, even I can imagine, as the cover suggests, that AD had moved there in a more mainstream Symph Metal direction.

The hills are alive with the sound of Symphonic Metal! This is Edenbridge, who are a long way from Edenbridge in Kent though, as they're from over the hills and far away in Austria. Imperia is a beautiful ancient city on the Ligurian coast of Italy, and Imperia the band are led by a beautiful blonde Viking goddess by the name of Helene Iren Michaelsen. Imperia are a truly international band with four members from four different European countries: namely, Norway, Belgium, Finland & Germany. Queen of Light is Imperia's second superb album and it would take a Braveheart indeed to deny the charms of their lovely Norwegian queen Helene. Heart

Wilkommen! Dutch band Kingfisher Sky (listed as Heavy Prog on PA) are one of the more melodic bands in the Symphonic Metal genre. Drummer Ivar de Graaf is the main generator of their music, having formed Kingfisher Sky back in 2001 after leaving Within Temptation. Judith Rijnveld is the sweet-voiced songstress on vocals, giving the band a sound something akin to a Heavy Metal version of Clannad. Smile

After a busy day of off-piste skiing (and falling) in the Austrian Alps, you won't find any Sanctuary back at the ski lodge when Austrian Symphonic Metal band Serenity are around. How ironic that the band have named themselves Serenity when their particular brand of metal mayhem is anything but serene.
