Welcome all to this edition of the Interactive Polls where we get the chance to visit and re-visit old Interactive polls (see list near bottom of post).  This is open to those who have participated in past polls and those who have not.  The Interactive Polls has a long history and so there is much to be inspired by.  You may have some regrets that you didn't choose X for a past poll, hadn't participated in a round, didn't think of one at the time and so on. You may have no regrets but still wish to revisit past polls for past possibilities -- the road not taken, the tracks not chosen.

When mentioning tracks for the topic consider these criteria:

a) You can bring up a track or tracks for potential nomination that you had mentioned but not nominated in an earlier Interactive Poll.
b) You can bring up a track or tracks for potential nomination that you wished (or now wish) that you had thought of for an earlier Interactive poll, or one that you had thought of but didn't mention (possibly due to restrictions on the number of allowed song suggestions).
c) You can mention a track or tracks for potential nomination that would have fit an earlier Interactive poll that you did not participate in.

Expectations:

1. Mention as many as you like, but let us know which past polls those tracks you mention are related to and please demonstrate which criteria (a, b, c above) they each fit.
2.  Please write the song and artist name and provide a video embed or hyperlink to the music so that we all can easily listen to and find it.
3. By Thursday next week you will be expected to have nominated TWO TRACKS to be included in this poll.
4. After that, you will be expected to listen to all of the nominations for this poll and then vote for and list your FOUR FAVOURITES (not your own).
5. Due to the "Revisitation" component, I ask people not to just dismiss songs as potential votes due to having heard it before and remembering it.

Special consideration:

If you do not wish to or have the time to listen to other people's choices and vote in the poll, then you can still mention music.  Just let me know that it is not for official nomination.  Those choices might be added to a special bonus section of the poll where people who are voting for three of the official nominees optionally also can vote for one bonus option (three official nominations plus one bonus). No voting for your own bonus, that would be bone-headed.  NOTE: Only one bonus per person for the poll, so specify which is the bonus nomination should you be one that doesn't have an official nomination.

Now here is the list of past polls to consider for your nominations and suggestions.  You might want to review them (can search your post in those if you want using topic search if it makes things easier).

Some of these have less specific themes than others, I suggest if thinking of something new to mention that you go for one of the more specifically themed ones.

The first four, or five is one included Revenge of the Mick, were less theme specific and more open than later ones, but one might have mentioned tracks in there that one wished to use for this poll.  Here are those links:

An open themed poll

It was really with the Greek one  that we got to more explicitly expressed themes and I would suggest starting your consideration here (and up) if you had not participated in earlier ones.

""Those moments when we come across some music that we don't know that totally surprises us. Maybe because of its quality, and we didn't know the artist before and heard it on radio or TV randomly, maybe because it is a way of doing music that we couldn't have imagined before, or maybe also because an artist who we knew already did something totally different from what we expected. That may be good, but it may also be a shock at first - you can propose something that surprised you at first in a bad or in a "I don't know WTF this is about" way...It may also be something that you heard in a totally surprising setup.  PA music excluded."

"I decided to make the theme wide as well. Your song or piece has to be either folk music of some sorts, or just contain folk elements in one way or another. There are many options: for instance regional folk music traditions from all corners of the world, modern folk music, the American folk tradition (like, say, Woody Guthrie or Pete Seeger) jazz/folk, folk rock, folktronica, and so on."

So in a way its kind of funny choosing from the poll themes as it could cover everything in music, but I still want people to think about the past themes, and if they participated, consider those ones they mentioned that they did not opt to nominate.  I definitely want this to be open to all to participate, whether they have participated in the past or not, and to highlight and maybe reminisce about some of the past polls more.  Once again, with whatever themed poll you choose, your suggestions should stick with the theme and its expectations (in some cases this might mean two choices for one option).  While I have short descriptions to go with the themes, refer to those for greater detail.  Rather than a greatest hits list, this poll's concept, at least in part, is a sort of greatest misses in a sense.  This is the road not chosen, the tracks not taken (not nominated) for earlier Interactive polls.  You might not have participated in the past poll that your posted track fits, but you now choose to mention that one that fits that old poll's theme.

Happy hunting!

I just lost a post -- forgot to copy the whole thing, luckily it was a little shorter than the last one. :P

I plan to cover a, b, and c, but will start with regrets.

"a) One can bring up a track or tracks for potential nomination one had mentioned but not nominated in an earlier Interactive poll."

Two such regrets spring to mind (minor regrets, but regrets still).

The first was in the  http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=123420&KW=Interactive" rel="nofollow -  poll.  I had been anxiously waiting for that for some time and had always planned to nominate Ennio Morricone.  He has been huge in my life and I have more Ennio albums than by anyone else.  Sadly, he passed away not long before I was to do the poll and that topic was to be my little homage to him.  I opted not to nominate a Morricone track, and instead I went with a pretty track from The Wicker Man.  I could have gone with dozens of Morricone tracks, but I chose one which I find quite triumphant.  It was later used in Kill Bill in a powerful-to-me scene later when the Bride rises from the grave.

Ennio Morricone - L'arena

The other was for  http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=127561&KW=" rel="nofollow - Interactive poll # ?!: The Rocking Ladies
In that I went with Eskaton's Dagon which is quite energetic and rockin', and I love it, but I never felt it was right for the poll (others who wrote seemed to prefer it to my other choices).  My heart was set on Melt-Banana's "Shield for Your Eyes, A Beast in the Well on Your Hand" which fit my interpretation of the poll to a tee.  I wish I had followed my heart.

^ The revenge of the discarded songs would have been a great title, especially as it parallels with an early Interactive Poll, Revenge of the Mick (or should I say poll attempt), ;) And indeed this presents the opportunity for many more discards and regrets (there is no limit to the one's one can mention as long as they are relevant and the relevance is explained -- I would like no more than a few per post though -- 4 max per post).

----------------------------------------

Just a note on theses parts of my overlong post in case they are missed, neglected or misunderstood:

Quote When mentioning tracks for the topics:

a) One can bring up a track or tracks for potential nomination one had mentioned but not nominated in an earlier Interactive poll.

b) One can bring up a track or tracks for potential nomination that one rather wished or wishes (or simply choose to now) one had thought of for an earlier Interactive poll, or thought of but didn't mention.

c) One can bring up a track or tracks for potential nomination that would have fit an earlier Interactive poll that one did not participate in.

Quote Some expectations for participation:

2. Expect a little write-up to go with each track you mention that states which prior theme it is based on, clarifies whether it was one you suggested there and opted not to nominate, whether it was one you hadn't thought of then but maybe you thought of it later... Maybe you wanted to mention it but only X number of mentions were permitted by that poll's rules (see a, b, and c above). Your choice should conform to the past poll's expectations.

The write-up to explain the relevance of the tracks was rather central to my concept. I know it means more work, but it helps me to see the context -- which poll a music choice is based on and how it fits the a, b, or c criteria. Besides, I like to see backstory if one has such things to share rather than just the choice (makes it feel more personal to me).

Also, if people can type the artist - track, that can help. When it comes to nominations I will be copy pasting your written track names. So sharing the format Artist - Song will help.

Note: I messed up in the dates for when I expect nominations to be done. I noticed it earlier but opted not to edit as I am having some technical issues with the site. I'm thinking that people's nominations should be specified by the morning of Thursday, March 24 at the latest, but ideally before. That's when I plan to put up the poll.

^ It is a very pleasant reminder of how terrific these have been.

^^ Thanks Nickie. Even if you aren't planning to take part and probably would not want to do this as you like to fully participate, a reminder to those that they can nominate bonus ones if they don't think that they will have time to listen through everyone's nominations and select three.

Some more from me:

Here are some option "b" criterion mentions from a very favourite act of mine (I did nominate a Portishead elsewhere)

"b) One can bring up a track or tracks for potential nomination that one rather wished or wishes (or simply choose to now) one had thought of for an earlier Interactive poll, or thought of but didn't mention."

Actually, I lost an edited post when I put the topic up and it timed out. That option should explicitly include ones that one didn't know at the time. It probably doesn't matter, but since those criteria are important, I wish I had the fuller and better put version.

Portishead - SOS

This would have been a great one for the http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=125303" rel="nofollow - Interactive Poll X: Cover Your Ears! and for the recent http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=128545" rel="nofollow - Interactive poll: How are you today? . I did not yet know it at the time of the covers poll methinks, so I would not have thought of it then. My nominations in the cover + original poll (I love the duos) there were the original Julee Cruise version of "Into the Night" and a Xiu Xiu cover from a Xiu Xiu Twin peaks cover album. I went with Michael Gira's (of Swans) "Blind" for the "How are you today?" poll.

So in keeping with that duos poll expectations, here are videos for the ABBA original and the cover.

And here's another Portishead of the I wish I had though of that but I didn't know it yet variety. Had the poll been done more recently, this likely would have been my nomination for the http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=125802" rel="nofollow - Interactive poll No. -46 2/3 - the folk music poll I had gone with Mark Fry's "The Witch", which I do love. The Portishead piece would be one that I wished I could have also included now (had I known it).

Portishead - The Rip

That one also would be good for a covers poll as Radiohead has covered it and Thom Yorke has performed it with Portishead. Or at least it would be if this cover was polished. Embed not working: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hApeZnjvBso" rel="nofollow - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hApeZnjvBso

When I opened my first interactive Poll, I posted a song by CSI, a 9-minute mini-suite, "L'ora delle tentazioni", which I consider one of the best Italian songs of all time.

I was undecided between that and "Aghia Sophia", a CCCP's song, also a 9-minute mini-suite, also competing for the best Italian song ever - in my opinion.

You already know CSI and CCCP
(CCCP was the Cyrillic abbreviation of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, CSI was the abbreviation of the Commonwealth of Independent States: the second group was the continuation of the first)

I posted songs of both but this one that I propose has nothing to do with the previous one of the CCCP that I proposed to you ("Tomorrow", a demential punk-rock piece with Amanda Lear).

This song goes from serious to facetious, from cultured (a quote from Simone Weil) to vulgar (Neapolitan slang where we talk about a pizza maker), from catholic to pagan, it is a crazy song, in the best dada-rock tradition, an almost pogressive piece led by an accordion and by the singing, that goes from paranoid to hallucinated to mystical.

Enjoy!!!

CCCP:
Aghia Sophia

Sunday tedium, eeh

Sophia, Wisdom Sophia
It incites women and burns
Burns with men
And it consumes his heart

Sophia, Wisdom Sophia

Watch me

Responsibility, equality
I will live the hierarchy, the honor, the punishment
I will experience the freedom of opinion
Security, risk, ownership
I will live the truth which is ultimate, the first"

Some of these polls indeed made me want to nominate lots... a very beloved artist of mine is Laura Veirs, apparently not too well known (if I go by the comments this one got in the female singer/songwriter poll). Her song Secret Someones that I suggested there narrowly lost out regarding my nomination spot against another one of my heroines, Barbara Morgenstern, so here's another chance for Laura Veirs and her Sercret Someones. For sure she should be in a poll at some point, even though I can't exclude that she'll have competition also here.

A bit early to share it, and while I like to read how the tracks relate to the earlier polls, I have made a playlist for the mentions here (will add as they come as it's a nice and easy way to listen -- I use youtube in desktop mode (on Opera) so I don't have to have to keep the player "open" when using my android phone.

"c) One can bring up a track or tracks for potential nomination that would have fit an earlier Interactive poll that one did not participate in."

Here is a choice for an Interactive Poll that I did not participate in at all, but I had wanted to mention at the time maybe out of competition due to too many things going on to wish to commit to the process. By which I mean participating in both nomination and voting -- let alone any commentary on people's suggestions of which I rarely have done that much.

The choice is Bach's Suite #1 For Cello in G -- Prelude" I like it best in full, but to make it more succinct... And I will go with the shorter duration version from the film The Hunger, which is where I just heard it (this sounds a little faster than I remember that version). On second thought, i will mention this performance by Ophélie Gaillard.

I considered mentioning it in the http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=128451" rel="nofollow - Interactive Poll: Where Musicians Don't Interact topic.

I have listened through everybodys several times (not many have been posted) and I really enjoyed the playlist.

Cristi, I really like all of yours, and don't take this as a recommendation for your choice as all very, very fine to my ears, but one of yours I sort of remember but don't "know" well is the Child track "Little Light" (from 1969)* that I really liked.   Not sure if you nominated that in Lorenzo's "We Love the Sixties" or another poll or if it was one you wished you had thought of for a poll. I think I remember hearing it from you before and maybe commenting on it. I seem to remember the Phoenix you mentioned from that one.

*I should say that I have listened to the Child track and various others the most in the context of the playlist which is in order of submission, and the fact is that because "Little Light" follows that noisy Melt-Banana track, with the contrast it becomes more like a breath of fresh air and enjoyable to my ears. :) When it comes to playlists, a track might well appeal more depending on what came before it (and after).

Lorenzo, I appreciated your track very much and the info that went with it.

Christian: I love that Laura Veirs' Secret Someones. It's a kind of thing I have been digging for these last couple of years.

And I forgot to mention that the Portishead cover of Abba's "SOS" would have fit the "Interactive Poll: Emotional songs (female)" topic very well, amongst others. There is another Emo female one that I want to mention if I can remember it.

Sorry for the excessive OP, which may be off-putting. It will be long due to the list of polls with descriptions but I got a bit silly and fanciful when talking about the poll. I wish I'd taken the time to edit it to make it more succinct/ readable in some places, more organised, and be more descriptive in others. I do hope more people will want to participate (just two days in now). It probably would be a more challenging topic for many than most others, some different expectations and there are more pressing things going on in the world to be concerned about that would I think be likely to limit participation. An easier distraction might have been better, although I have been wanting to do this concept for a very long time, but I expected it would have its challenges. At least it's nice to revisit the old polls.... See how it goes.... EDIT: And that we don't have Nicky to comment on the choices probably, and Kees is out. might well mean less involvement... Definitely one of the biggest enjoyments for me in these is reading the comments by people such as Nickie and I know I always would look forward to hers (lots of anticipation here for those comments from the talented commentators here - ever grateful for those).

^ Oh, man, you sure are talkative! Tongue
I very much like this poll idea. It's a bit archival work - that should appeal to me...  And, I'm not "out", I just have much less decent listening time available, and less time to comment on suggestions. I like commenting and I like reading comments by others. I agree that this is what makes these polls especially enjoyable and makes them about exchanging music affinities. It is nice to read why people suggest something and what they think about the suggestions of others. But it does take time, and not everyone has that always at hand or is at ease with writing about suggestions by others.
I hope this weekend I will be able to suggest some music and listen to what has been put up so far...

Here's a German single from the early 80s that I'd have liked to be posted in the Dreadful Decade poll. http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=128144&PN=1" rel="nofollow - Interactive Poll: Field Recordings

That edition was quite a challenge, and for various reasons. One of them was that the track that I initially wanted to share was way too long (+/- 16 min), precisely because it included plenty of field recordings. The album was released back in 1972 but it has been re-released in 2013 with a shorter version of the respective track. Unfortunately it was not available on-line at the time. But miracles do happen sometimes. Thanks to the revisitation of the interactive poll history, I realized that someone had meanwhile uploaded the new, shorter version to youtube.

It is a piece by French jazz legend Barney Wilen. In 1970 he assembled a team of filmmakers, technicians and musicians to travel to Africa for the purpose of recording the music of the native pygmy tribes. Upon returning to Paris two years later he created the album "Moshi", an eccentric effort fusing avant jazz sensibilities with African rhythms, ambient sound effects and melodies rooted in American blues traditions. Cut with French and African players, this is music with few precedents or followers, spanning from extraterrestrial dissonance to earthbound, street-legal funk. Enjoy! Oh, and btw the track lasts about 6 min, so no worries about that. LOL

I might add a few more tracks later but basically I assume that this will be my nomination, given that I have not yet participated in so many polls. It makes little sense to bring up not nominated songs from recent polls.

Strangely (Ermm), I never had a poster of her above my bed... I think I already had some Roger Dean works on my walls. Poor sod... All those missed opportunities... Unhappy

Been fun looking back at some of these. So, I was thinking back on what I passed on finally nominating, I noticed that I had several pieces suggested but not nominated with Indian musicians and/or musical influences. I have had a long interest in Indian culture. Two of my best friends from high school are Indian. Of late, I have had an interest in Indian influenced cooking, making some curries and chutneys. I also work with different production teams in India.

So, bringing these back up.

From Interactive Poll #16, I had put up some covers of the Guns N' Roses song "Sweet Child O' Mine" and then ended up going in another direction.

I used to live down there, and one night, I was driving around, running errands, and listening to a local community radio station and the DJ (Ray Villadonga) was playing an assortment of jazz rock fusion, psychedelic, space, and prog rock. One of the tracks was from a band that he cofounded and played bass for, Wahh World Fusion Band. The band primarily consists of a tabla player/vocalist, bassist, guitarist, e-sitarist, and drummer. I couldn’t find any individual tracks from their first album on Youtube, so this one is from their second album, called “Brother Ray,” in honor of Ray. Ray passed away from cancer in 2017 prior to the release of this album and he only played on a few of the tracks. I don’t think he is on this one. The end of the track has some konnakol.

If interested, their first album “Liberation” is available as a free MP3 download from their  https://www.wahhmusic.com/" rel="nofollow - website . Click on the “get album” link on the page.

Second up, the primary listed artist is one I have mentioned before in these polls, fusion bass player Jonas Hellborg. He is on PA and has collaborated with many artists. My previous nomination from him was a collaboration with guitarist Buckethead and drummer Michael Shrieve. This one has him collaborating with guitarist Shawn Lane and Indian musicians (and brothers) V. Umashankar (ghatam and konnakol), V. Selvaganesh (kanjira and konnakol), and V. Umamahesh (vocals).

Thank you all for your contributions. We have at least three more full days for contributions, and I do hope some more people decide to take the challenge, be they ones who have participated in past Interactive polls and/or ones who have not. It requires some effort, as do all Interactive Polls but being so open, I don't think it should be that much of a challenge for anyone at the forum.

I have been actively compiling the suggestions into a playlist, here is the link again in case anyone missed it the first time:

That was before my time but had I participated in this poll I might have considered a soundtrack by Eleni Karaindrou who wrote the music for most films by Theo Angelopoulos. This is a piece from "The Beekeeper" (Part 2 of his Triology of Silence) where she collaborated with various musicians. Here you can hear Eleni on piano and Jan Garbarek on sax. Enjoy!

This could actually be one of the most interesting polls but you have to invest a little time. I have joined the interactive polls not so long ago but I found a way to participate still. I have to admit that at first I felt a bit intimidated by your lengthy intro but I guess that's just me. lol But thank you for adding the full poll history, much appreciated! Smile

Thanks Mila.

As is common with me, I wrote it in a way that makes it seem more complicated and harder than it is (a kind of self-parody).  The list and the descriptions to go with those was bound to be long and was what took the most time to prepare, but the rest could have been much more concise.

I could have just said (or less, but I don't like to seem terse):

Welcome all to this edition of the Interactive Polls where we get the chance to visit and re-visit old Interactive polls (see list at bottom).  This is open to those who have participated in past polls and those who have not.  The Interactive Polls has a long history and so there is much to be inspired by.  You may have some regrets that you didn't choose X for a past poll, hadn't participated etc.

3. By Wednesday or Thursday next week you will be expected to have nominated one to be included in this poll.
4. After that, you will be expected to listen to all of the nominations for this poll and then vote for and list your three favourites (not your own).

Now here is the list to consider for your nominations.  Happy hunting!
...
Here are my suggestions as examples.

Or something like that. Wink

OK, a last one I want to bring forward is one that was apparently appreciated, but that I didn't nominate, because it was up to two other masterpieces by Kreng (in the It Goes On and On poll). But it is still one of my personally most appreciated pieces of music I've been putting forward in these IA-polls.

Kaboom Karavan - Roadmap:

My nomination will still be Nena, though. I'm afraid she wouldn't forgive me if I wouldn't nominate her this time... And somehow... Oh gosh, I wished I'd still be 15...

And yeah, it would be helpful if everyone would tell us for which poll they considered their contributions.

Yes, thanks for suggesting this, Mila.  I have PMed Lorenzo asking if he would like to mention and nominate one more.  I do think his current one selection is excellent.

Ennio Morricone - L'arena
Portishead - The Rip

I may think of others....

This was the very first poll that I've hosted. So even though that was not so long ago this poll has a special meaning to me. I had plenty of material to share and I liked all of my suggestions equally. But since we had quite a few East Asian tracks in competition at the time I decided to nominate one of my other two options. This piece is from a Japanese video game soundtrack.

Kikuo ft. Hanatan: The Girl Who Sells Missfortune

My nominations will be:

I only know the band Child was a suggested song for the 60s round and I also think Phoenix - Floarea Stancilor was in that round, too. I don't know the rest, I didn't think it mattered.

I posted 4 Romanian songs here, like I said, tough choice. LOL

I didn't skip it, I skimmed through it, that's true. Embarrassed

Posted By: Logan

No worries, my intro was ludicrously long, had I written it more like I did on page two (quite succinct -- friendly -- without being terse), then we actually might have had more participation. I did have iodine coursing through my veins, as I wrote it after having CT scans, but I was overindulgent. I do enjoy writing silly stuff, and I do know better.

I had my reasons for asking for the info, partially as the sharing of that journey in this I thought would add to the fabric of this sort of communal trips down memory lane idea, and I just like to see how it fits, but there's no need to go back and remember which topics you returned to for inspiration. I knew one of them at least had come from the 60s thread.

Glad we are doing the two nominations, (good thinking, Mila) due to the, quite possibly, record turn-out (not a record I would have hoped to break).

I don't mind less people, but I also don't want to let down the "team". Glad Lorenzo asked me if I wanted to do it then still as I have wanted to do this theme for quite a long time, but worried how well it would work for others and knew it would be quite time-consuming to prepare.

No, I don't think so, possibly the instrumental round. The song is played live in 1981, I think it's late 70s. Also what happened around 1981, the band was asked to do a pop-rock album, or better said forced to, which they did and it's a rather good album, but the Jazz-rock fusion they were doing earlier was gone.

Post-Scriptum band members were in a band called Gramofon, which did  not even get a recording contract with the national recording company called Electrecord, just a few National Radio recordings. I have listened to those songs, great jazzy rock sound, which unfortunately does not exist on youtube.

Jazz-rock is right down my alley! I'll try to find some of their earlier material. I have a friend from Romania, here in Switzerland. He is a musician and he has a considerable vinyl collection. He's even building guitars for himself and also for other musicians!

Possible.
In the 70s and 80s, the label Electrecord was releasing these splits/compilations of artists but I don't remember Gramofon being on any of them. National Radio was helping some bands back then so most likely they are radio recordings.

So I plan to put the poll up tomorrow morning, and I have opted to do two from Portishead's Third (I was going to do one Portishead and one Morricone) and this fits the sort of  http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=125186&KW=Interactive" rel="nofollow - Duos of Contrast  poll as two I could have mentioned but unlike the duos poll, I will separate the listings. Portishead's "The Rip" likely these days would have been my  http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=125802&KW=Interactive" rel="nofollow - the folk music poll  choice, or even the  http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=126491&KW=Interactive" rel="nofollow - Emotional songs (female singer)  poll and "Machine Gun" could I think fit the  http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=124155&KW=Interactive" rel="nofollow - Welcome to the machines!  poll due to its electronic character although it would fit a "Welcome to the machine guns" poll better still.  I mean they are both electronica, but one is more of an industrial kind of electronica, and the other has folktronica qualities.

Here are my song choices off Portishead's Third:

Portishead - Machine Gun

Portishead - The Rip

if anyone wants to make any changes or still participate there is still some time.  It's very open due being able to base your suggestion on so many past polls as well as the different ways you approach this as mentioned in the "criteria" section of the original post.  A post that is now 25 percent easier to read. ;)

As for me, you can delete one of the song titles by Kikuo. The English one is quite sufficient imo.

I would not add the Japanese title to the poll. And yes, I actually would love to add another Portishead track from Third, which has been my favourite off the album.

I love the Krautrock qualities, but I won't. I tend to get very, very into particular albums and bands at a given time, and it has been most about Swans (The Glowing Man especially) and Portishead of late. Portishead asked Swans to open up a music festival, I found out not long ago. I tried to look that up on goggle now and instead saw news stories about swans that were found beheaded in a Portishead park. :(

These polls do help me to diversify my musical diet, which can become too singular at any given time.

Greg, I think you're missing the idea of your own poll. We all have our favourites, but.

Posted By: Logan
Date Posted: March 24 2022 at 18:44
I'm flexible even with my own ideas. But nah, I haven't forgotten what this poll is about and the voyage of discovery and re-discovery that it's meant to motivate. It started with the idea of regrets, and now I regret my last post so all is good. ;) . I have seriously considered Portishead for one of my polls and mentioned a track before methinks (Sour Times) by the way. Might have nominated another. I think those two I nominated work well for certain criteria. This is a very open world poll. Don't take my last post too seriously though, kind of poking fun at myself (the Canadian way).

EDIT: On second thought...

I will go back to my Ennio Morricone - L'arena plus the Portishead - The Rip nomination.  Those both work well for me.

Again with the Morricone:

I had been anxiously waiting to prepare the  http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=123420&KW=Interactive" rel="nofollow -  poll for a long time and had always planned to nominate Ennio Morricone.  He has been huge in my life and I have more Ennio albums than by anyone else.  Sadly, he passed away not long before I was to do the poll and that topic was to be my little homage to him.  I opted not to nominate a Morricone track (partially because the second suggestion from someone was Morricone, and I wanted to do something different than have two Morricone's in a row), and instead I went with a pretty track from The Wicker Man -- pretty unremarkable I think most thought (I love Willow's Song and Christopher Lee loved that soundtrack).  I could have gone with dozens of Morricone tracks, but I chose one which I find quite triumphant.  It was later used in Kill Bill in a powerful-to-me scene later when the Bride rises from the grave.  I did very much regret my decision not to nominate a Morricone (any Morricone). RIP, maestro.

From RIP to the Rip...

Here's a Portishead of the "I wish I had though of that but I didn't know it yet" variety. Had the poll been done more recently, this likely would have been my nomination for the  http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=125802" rel="nofollow - Interactive poll No. -46 2/3 - the folk music poll . I had gone with Mark Fry's "The Witch", which I do love. The Portishead piece would be one that I wished I could have also included now (had I known it).  This is also one that I considered for the  http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=128545&KW=" rel="nofollow - How are you today?  poll as it captured a mood I was in (I went with M. Gira's "Blind").

The choices are made, no regrets going forward. Wink

What a cool playlist! I was going to say I vote for Nena for you, but that may not be going to happen.

@greg, the version of the CCCP track in the playlist is not showing up for me. The one Lorenzo has a couple of pages back does play. Can you see if it could be swapped in the playlist?

I have amended the nominees playlist.  Thanks George and Lorenzo.

And thanks Mila, I have some Luis Bacalov in my collection, not Il Postino, although  have seen the film. Good stuff.

Classy list, great work guys!
These are pretty good: Krypton, Wahh World Fusion Band, Ennio Morricone, Portishead, Barney Wilen, Diabo Na Cruz
These I like a lot: Post Scriptum, Nena, Elephant 9
These five are really phantastic: Bill Laswell, Kaboom Karavan, CCCP, N. Alesini & P.L. Andreoni,  Kikuo ft. Hanatan

Ha, that was predictable. I can vote for four, so I find five voting candidates. I like the idea to vote for tracks by four different people, so with regret I'm not voting for CCCP, which leaves me with  Bill Laswell, Kaboom Karavan, N. Alesini & P.L. Andreoni,  Kikuo ft. Hanatan

So, what is this, actually: a best of the rest, the rest of the best or the best of the best? A wonderful playlist, anyway - a great pleasure to listen to, with no weak tracks!

My first three votes were rather immediate for me:
- Alesini & Andreoni - Khanbaligh; Roger Eno's and David Torn's stamp on this one is marvelous, a masterpiece.
- Kikuo ft. Hanatan - The Girl Who Sells Misfortune; I already singled this one out when it was not nominated, glad it is coming back here.
- Wahh World Fusion Band - Desire on Fire; another rich and adventurous track.

And then the trouble starts... Why give us a fourth vote? Do you really think that this makes our lives easier? It is not! Wacko Tongue
So, because I cannot choose between Laura Veirs, Extrabreit, Portishead or Elephant9, I vote for Krypton - Fata Morgana (we need rock!)...

Really great IA-poll round. Thumbs Up
(but now I'm listening to Nena's album! Heart)

Definitely no weak tracks and all I really like, so it will make voting difficult and maybe a bit indiscriminate (not the word I want -- common enough word and I can't think of it and without the precise word I can't fully form the concept -- EDIT, arbitrary popped into my head and covers it well enough).  And we, or at least I, wouldn't want voting made easier.  These commonly are at their best when it's hard to make a choice (well, as long as it's because you really appreciate all rather than it's harder to find ones you really like).

I'm often in the case of these where I wish I could vote for many more, but then I would feel bad about leaving any others out.  No real regrets as long as I mostly did it my way.

And now, the end is near
And so I face the final curtain
My friend, I'll make it clear
I'll state my case, of which I am certain
I've lived a life that's full
I traveled each and every highway
And more, much more
I did it, I did it my way
Regrets, I've had a few
But then again, too few to mention
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exemption....

MINI-REVIEWS:

Laura Veirs - Secret Someones: Pop song with an oblique and slightly disturbing pop rhythm, interesting keyboard work in the background. Beautiful voice.

Extrabreit - Polizisten: pesudo-military march led by the bass, interesting work on the guitar and good vocal performance in the chorus, essential for varying an otherwise monotonous composition. Great song.

Post Scriptum - Urme De Pasi Pe Infinit: instrumental piece of wonderful cybernetic jazz in new wave style, conducted with a frenzied rhythm, but in the middle comes a melodic interlude on the harmonica. If percussion had returned in the end it would have been a masterpiece.

Krypton - Fata Motgana: Very sophisticated commercial piece, excellent bass and guitar work, reggae contamination a la Police. Very good song.

Bill Laswell - Above the Earth: Dreamy song floating in the ether, with spoken words and then electronic percussive work. In the ending, spoken words return. New age atmosphere with oriental gongs.

Wahh World Fusion Band - Desire on Fire: Indian song with an arrangement based on the sitar and on the very pregnant vocals of the singer. After two minutes comes the contamination with a western rhythm (drums accompanied by tablas), and a guitar solo worthy of a late sixties style jam blues session. A world-music / prog evolution occupy the final piece (it recalls Fateh Ali Khan in singing). Great song.

I found a better and longer version of the song. I wish I found that earlier. Embarrassed
The soft ending of the song is like a moment of tranquility, I always get goosebumps when the harmonica kicks in and I've known the song for a really long while. There's no need for the drums to get back, I don't see how they could have done it.

The piece with the harmonica, slow, melodic, is very beautiful but in the economy of a short song, like the first one you posted, it seems too dilated and immediately breaks an exciting frenetic jazz part. For this reason, I would have liked the jazz part to return.

In the second video, the piece with the harmonica comes after a much longer and more exhausting jazz part, and then it seems much better to me: the quiet after the storm, without taking up half the song. So, in the second case, I don't need for the frenetic pace to return, in fact everything becomes in its place.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable playlist. All tracks were wonderful. Listened a couple of times and with a random shuffle.

My votes:

Post Scriptum - Urme De Pasi Pe Infinit
Portishead - The Rip
Kaboom Karavan - Roadmap
N. Alesini & P.L. Andreoni - Khanbaligh

Mini-reviews:

Morricone as always epic, in this case also ecstatic and martial in the second part. Very enjoyable.

Portished benefit as always from Beth Gibbons' fragile voice and in this case from a sober percussion / keyboard progression that brings this pop towards a dilated synth pop.

Nena - Satellitenstadt: synthetic sound that initially could have been Eurythmics, then more towards Ultravox. You hear the martial rhythm of German cabaret, sober, essential, cruel: keyboards and percussion voice. Very austere.

Kaboom Karavan - Roadmap: it is a song with a unique sound, I think a mix of acoustic instruments (perhaps ethnic) and electronic instruments. The composition is minimal, the work is all about the layering of sounds. In a certain sense we can consider it psychedelic music, a space-folk. Very adventurous.

Barney Wilen - Moshi (Too): apart from the field noises, this is a late sixties style blues jam (like Blind Faith), with a little bit of wild and tribal to it. Very good.

Kikuo ft. Hanatan - The Girl Who Sells Misfortune: song supported by an irresistible melodic progression on the keyboards and a sharp, alienating song that make it overwhelming. Added to this are the inventions of the electronic / noisy arrangement (in some places delicious, in others bordering on kitsch pleasure). Gorgeous.

Elephant9 - Throughout the Worlds: minimalist, ecstatic song, with keyboards in the foreground and soft percussion. We are from the parts of progressive electronic. Very relaxing.

Diabo na Cruz - Pioneiros (MPAGDP): good melodic song for partying in company, played with goliardic enthusiasm.

My Podium:

1) Kikuo ft. Hanatan - The Girl Who Sells Misfortune
2) Post Scriptum - Urme De Pasi Pe Infinit [extended version, anyway, the second version would go on the 4th place]
3) Extrabreit - Polizisten....

For the fourth place I was undecided between
4) Kaboom Karavan - Roadmap
and
Desire on Fire.

Hmmmm...

Honorable mentions:

5) Wahh World Fusion Band - Desire on Fire
6) Barney Wilen - Moshi (Too)
7) Ennio Morricone - L'Arena
8) Krypton - Fata Motgana

I had similar thoughts on this. I loved how the track started, but I'd have liked to have the softer piece as an intermezzo only. The other version works much better indeed.

Ennio Morricone - L'arena
Nena - Satellitenstadt
Laura Veirs - Secret Someones

I really like everything, and like Christian before, I will only do one suggestion per user.

Four votes is not nearly enough. 16 would be perfect.

Kikuo ft. Hanatan - The Girl Who Sells Misfortune
Bill Laswell - Above The Earth (City of Light) (very tempted by your other choice too, now kind of wishing I had gone with that as I so dig the groove -- awesome)
CCCP - Aghia Sophia
Extrabreit - Polizisten (thought I'd go with the Laura choice at first, so in my wheelhouse -- love both)

I was planning to vote for the Elephant9, but on this last listen another pipped it (love Elephant9).  Really tough since every option is a winner to me and I wish every option had a vote.

By the way, bit late for the poll to change the Post Scriptum version, I guess, since we have a number of votes already.  Well, maybe that version could go in the next Interactive Poll Dredge - Regrets topic, if this kind of subject/ approach is revisited.

Many thanks to those who have contributed, and very glad we did the two per person nominations.  Three would have worked too as it turns out. :D

I've been busy these days and unfortunately I don't have time to comment, last but not least due to a few quite epic pieces we've had in the line-up this time around. Tongue

My votes will go to:

Elephant9: Throughout The Worlds
Portishead: The Rip
Extrabreit: Polizisten
Wahh World Fusion Band: Desire on Fire

Thank you all for the music and special thanks to Greg for hosting this interesting poll! Smile
