I started doing little mini-reviews for purchases I'd made in Bandcamp during their "Bandcamp Fridays," last year, and was approached by Chuck Simons at Progrock.com to contribute to his "Top 10," show on Tuesdays, 8AM - 10AM PST.

Bandcamp Fridays is where they waive their fees for purchases the first Friday of each month, (at least for 4 more months).  I usually I review 6-10 artists in progressive as well as other genres that have caught my ear on the Tuesday preceding Bandcamp Friday.

If you would like to come along to hear my segment (Nickie's Niches), it is the first one of the show, this Tuesday, 1 February, it is starting 5 minutes early, so check in a bit early.  If you'd like to come along to the live chat that day, you can PM me here and I will send you an invite.

Do I have to catch this at the right time or can it still be found later online? I'm definitely interested but chances are I can't make the indicated time.

Thank you so much, Christian!  We had really high numbers for the first two, and I am working on familiarizing myself with Audacity software, to see if I can prepare the whole thing, with my voice as well.  But it's taking time, as I am also finally getting to unpacking some things for my house after 2 years in storage, during a complicated move.

So glad you enjoyed it!  Hopefully you will like the one that I'm working on for this coming month.

I started doing little mini-reviews for purchases I'd made in Bandcamp during their "Bandcamp Fridays," last year, and was approached by Chuck Simons at Progrock.com to contribute to his "Top 10," show monthly, on Tuesday, 8AM - 10AM PST.  This installment will air today, 1 March.

I usually I review 6-10 artists in progressive as well as other genres that have caught my ear on the Tuesday preceding Bandcamp Friday.

Chuck reads the mini-reviews I’ve prepared and then plays a tune I’ve selected as a favourite, or indicative of what one might expect in listening to the rest of the release.  These reviews are also posted on the artist’s bandcamp page.

There will a podcast available on progrock afterwards, if it’s at an inconvenient time for a live listen.  If you'd like to come along to the live chat that day, you can PM me here and I will send you an invite.

I saw the news today that Bandcamp was acquired by Epic Games.  How is that going to change Bandcamp?

Here's what Ethan Diamond (Co-Founder and CEO) had to say about it (an excerpt):

Bandcamp will keep operating as a standalone marketplace and music community, and I will continue to lead our team. The products and services you depend on aren’t going anywhere, we’ll continue to build Bandcamp around our artists-first revenue model (where artists net an average of 82% of every sale), you’ll still have the same control over how you offer your music, Bandcamp Fridays will continue as planned, and the Daily will keep highlighting the diverse, amazing music on the site. However, behind the scenes we’re working with Epic to expand internationally and push development forward across Bandcamp, from basics like our album pages, mobile apps, merch tools, payment system, and search and discovery features, to newer initiatives like our vinyl pressing and live streaming services.

Hello Raff!  I've been wondering for some time how you and Micky are doing.  Big hugs to you both!  HugHug

Yes, I am a bit in awe reviewers who actually write detailed reviews, even these short ones can be hard to come up with just the right descriptives.  It truly is an art to be able to do proper reviewing.

I like to give the lesser-knowns some exposure where I can.  The shows are very varied in scope and am still learning the pacing of them, as far as order of presentation.

Thank you for stopping by and I do hope you are both doing well in these crazy times.  Heart

~Nickie

Thank you, Nickie, we are doing reasonably well, considering the global situation. Anyway, I have now listened to the whole podcast, and found it much to my liking. I hadn't listened to so much new prog in a long, long time! Unfortunately I have lost a lot of interest in exploring new music, but I am glad you are giving me and others the opportunity to listen to some excellent picks.

Wow, thank you so much, Raff!  Glad to hear you're as OK as anyone can be, these days.

I got so much help and support from others, that it just made sense to start paying it forward.  Of course there will be some of the "biggies," included from time to time (as long as they're on Bandcamp), but my real focus is on lesser-known artists, and not just progressive, as you'll find.  Always been a fan of the underdog.

Nothing precisely minimalist on the roster this time, it all depends on what I've purchased, and nothing fell under that realm this time.  But you never know, I certainly don't stick to one genre at all.

I chose The Pentangle to start, as they were my gateway drug into Prog Folk and they have quite the legacy, both as a group and also the numerous solo and side projects of John Renbourn and Bert Jansch.

Thank you, Mike!  This one will be different than my typical monthly shows. and even different than my projected prog folk shows, since it's all about one group, but hopefully listeners will enjoy.

Hi Nickie. Hope all is well. I enjoy and appreciate your show and have picked up some things over the past months from listening to it. I wanted to note that I did find Solstice's album on Bandcamp previously. I heard them on an Amazon playlist recommendation and searched for that album.

Hi There, George!

So glad you've been listening, enjoying, and also supporting acts that you've found from the show.  Smile

I did find that once I'd recorded and sent in the show to the main host that the Solstice release did get added to Bandcamp, but it was too late to alter the show's narration by then.  The record company didn't get it added until several weeks after the release on the label site, apparently.  I was able to let those in chat know they could get it on Bandcamp and that will be on my FB post that I'm going to put up today re Bandcamp Friday.

I have continued to follow the Interactive Polls and may indeed join in again should a theme strike me (as having something new to offer), and time allow.  Those polls were instrumental in my realization that a Progressive audience would enjoy adjacent material in other genres, which partially led to the fruition of the show segment itself.

Thank you so much for commenting, and for listening!

Hmmm...Prog Folk/Adjacent shows? How about Jethro Tull's evolution from blues/jazz/folk/rock on their debut up to their Brit-folk Trilogy in the late 70s? All acoustic, starting with "Some Day the Sun Won't Shine for You" to "Dun Ringill."

I definitely have a Jethro Tull feature in the works, they are among my favourite prog bands, and I saw them live many, many times.

I am not that familiar with Annette Peacock, I know I've heard something or other, but will check into her further.

There actually is a full Sandy Denny solo program that is completed, but will probably put out a multi-artist one next.

Attention Fans of Musical Niches:  It’s that time again!

Tune in for the final Niches show of 2023.  However, there will be a Prog Folk Show on 12 December, same time, same place.

Eleven fine musical acts from almost as many genres will appear on my "Nickie's Niches," segment on Chuck Simons’ “Top 10” show will be airing tomorrow morning, 28 November.  The show begins at 8am PST, on Progrock.com It includes mini-reviews and a tune from each of my Bandcamp and other purchases from last month.  Focus is on a wide variety of music, with an emphasis on chamber prog, ambient, world, soundtrack, and acid/wyrd/dark folk, most with a progressive twist.

There will a podcast available on progrock afterwards, if it’s at an inconvenient time for a live listen.  To join the chat, go to progrock.com and click on Chat link at top of page.

Following my segment will be Dennis’ Time Machine, 1971 Part 3.
I will be presenting the 5th Prog Folk show on Tuesday, 12 December and will reach out just prior to that.

Attention Fans of Musical Niches:

From the Department of Prog Folk Notifications Department, this just in.

"Nickie's Niches," will be doing a Prog Folk show as a guest offering on Chuck Simons’ “Top 10” show, tomorrow, 12 December, from 8:00 AM - 10 AM PT, on Progrock.com.

Since my last Prog Folk show was all about The San Francisco Sound and how it influenced folk and rock artists of the time, I am going to focus on early psych folk, including an example of early prog folk. We'll visit the US (both coasts represented) and England, featuring 7 artists.  Following my segment, Dennis Gaylor will conclude the final hour with another edition of his Time Machine, 1971 Part 4.

There will a podcast available on progrock afterwards, if it’s at an inconvenient time for a live listen. To join the chat, go to progrock.com and click on Chat link at top of page.
