I was just thinking about how the album rating system here is
about how essential the album is to a PROG collection. But it is
often the case that a progband can make an album that isn't
prog but is still a good album. I think that we should have two
different ratings for every album: the one we already have, and
one just a general rating of the album irrespective of how prog
it is. I think it would be helpful if say you are exploring a certain
70's prog band's later works, say Rush, for example, and you
want to know what's good and what's not, regardless of how
prog it is. Rush weren't really prog in the 80's (after Moving
Pictures), but I think that they made some excellent albums
during that time. I think also, that if we had the two ratings it
would reduce high ratings on the prog scale for albums that are
good but aren't very prog. Just a thought, cause where else am
I going to get valuable information on this stuff? It's like, I'll look
at different bands' discographies and all the ratings are lower in
the 80's, because prog largely died in the 80's, but are those
albums, though not prog, still good? A lot aren't, but some are.
Just the fact that this a site for prog lovers means that any
album rating is going to already be from a proglover's
perspective. An album doesn't always have to be true prog to
be a good album that a proglover can appreciate. Any
opinions?

Yes, this is a good idea that has been proposed before (and will be again, no doubt!).
At the risk of repeating myself...
