Aallriight, Nogbad, I didn't imagine that our favourites ever could be so much the same - even I'm in fact fond of about the half of the albums, you've listed as your Heavy Prog favourites.
Glad to see!

Hi,

I really have no "favorites". It's hard for me to say that I love this or that, and then I put on Sebastium en Truam, and I fall apart and away so fast just like I did with all the others. I can still cry when I hear Mother Sky. I still fly and float when I hear the Yeti title piece. And I absolutely love a lot of the Ash Ra Tempel material including the stuff that was "bad" or "stolen". And then, all I have to do is put on one of the DVD's or shows from the toob, on with Tangerine Dream from 1995 to 2015 ... and it just takes me away so fast. And I still am nowhere I know where when I hear Stratosfear.

"It's all too much" ... and now ... some Edgar for me! The English version of "krautrock".

It was my introduction to krautrock, so there's a lot of sentimentality wrapped up in it for me, but Die grüne reise by A.R. & Machines is my favorite. Neu!'s self-titled and Faust IV are also pretty up there for me.

My reply in http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=127257&KW=can+faust+popol+vuh&PID=5929552#5929552" rel="nofollow - Your Top 12 German Prog Albums last September will have to do.

Originally posted by Saperlipopette! Saperlipopette! wrote:

Can - Ege Bamyasi (but anything from their debut up to and including Soon over Babulama would make the list)
Popol Vuh - Nosferatu: On the Way to a Little Way / Brüder Des Schattens - Söhne Des Lichts
Cosmic Jokers - Galactic Supermarket
Tangerine Dream - Phaedra
Embryo - Stieg Aus (but they've got like six equally strong contenders)
Klaus Schulze - Mirage
Amon Düül II - Yeti
Faust - So Far
Kraan - Kraan
Kraftwerk - Die Mensch-Maschine
Cluster - Zuckerzeit
Dzyan - Electric Silence

Loads more I would have like to include: Frankie Dymon Jr (just doesn't really feel german), Dom, Harmonia, Deuter, Brave New World, Kalacackra, A.R + Machines, Tortilla Flat mm...

Again: Not one of my favorite sub-genres--more because I don't quite understand how to define it (Faust, Neu!, Can, Ash Ra Tempel, Amon Düül II, Grobschnitt, Popol Vuh, Cluster, and Brainticket all under the same sub-genre?!?!?! That's crazy!)
But there are some albums I've enjoyed:

Agitation Free Malesch
Grobschnitt Solar Musick Live!
Popol Vuh Hosiannah Mantra andTantric Songs
Electric Orange Morbus and Volume 10
Wserbergland Am Ende der Welt and Sehr Kismisch, Ganz Progisch
Ash Ra Tempel Ash Ra Tempel
Amon Düül II Yeti
Øresund Space Collective The Black Tomato
Vespero The Waters of Tomorow and The Four Zaos
Brainticket Cottonwood Hill and Celestial Ocean
Ulver ATGCLVLSSCAP
The Spacelords Liquid Sun

Going for what PA classifies as Krautrock only:

Holger Czukay - Movies
Can - Soon Over Babaluma
Amon Düül II - Yeti

Now I guess I'd get to the best 15 if not more by listing albums of Holger, Can, and ADII only (and it goes even further including associated solo albums that aren't in this category or not even on PA... Irmin Schmidt!!! But also Jaki and Chris Karrer), but in order to bring in diversity:

Agitation Free - Malesch
Faust - s/t (and IV)
Guru Guru - Live
Neu! - s/t
Deuter - D
Popol Vuh - Hosianna Mantra
Ton Steine Scherben - Scherben

Actually, despite being a big fan of the top 3, otherwise most German stuff I love is not in this category.

Tangerine Dream -Force Majeure (yes, this one rocks)
Eloy -Floating
Jane -Fire, Water, Earth and Air
Grobschnitt -Solar Music Berlin (1977)

Faust: So Far and IV
Neu!: Neu
Cluster: Zuckerzeit

Krautrock is one of my favourite categories and these were the first to spring to mind (one album per act).

Dom - Edge of Time
Brave New World - Impressions on Reading Aldous Huxley
Message - From Books and Dreams
Can - Soundtracks
Popol Vuh - Hosianna Mantra
Yatha Sidhra - A Meditation Mass
Embryo - Embryo's Rache
Faust - So Far
Amon Düül II - Yeti
Ralf Nowy - Lucifer's Dream
Neu! - Neu!
Ash Ra tempel - Ash Ra Tempel
Brainticket - Cottonwoodhill
Tangerine Dream _ Electronic Meditation
Agitation Free - Malesch
Dzyan - Electric Silence
Kraan - Kraan
Harmonia - Muskik von Harmonia
The Cosmic Jokers - Galactic Supermarket...

And also in a kind of Krautrock universe, I love Bobby Beausoleil's Lucifer Rising, then there is Boredom's Vision Creation Newsun, and I love This Heat, and I could include more pop acts such as Stereolab for some early albums, some Portishead, then there is David Bowie's Berlin trilogy. And a quite recent discovery of mine, Vanishing Twin I find that a lot of the sort of art pop and art rock music of the 90s up that I love has a Krautrock influence (often referencing Can and Neu! and/ or Harmonia...)

correctness? The guy made fun of me for three days. What correctness are we talking about? What is it that I don't understand here? Basically I should always turn the other cheek, when I defend myself I'm rude or inappropriate, or what? Unhappy

In the spirit of Friendship in this New Age of Earth we're currently living in, I'll add a few more Krautrock favourites to my Galactic Supermarket shopping list.
These are Space Rock albums I Dream and Desire of the most. Smile

5 stars 2000: Ash Ra Tempel - Friendship (with Klaus Schulze) -  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-UvObqiyVg" rel="nofollow - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-UvObqiyVg
5 stars 1977: Ashra - New Age of Earth -  https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_n_kR6-2IslcPoE-8P5hDGtScWiNl2SqZQ" rel="nofollow - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_n_kR6-2IslcPoE-8P5hDGtScWiNl2SqZQ
4 stars 1974: The Cosmic Jokers - Galactic Supermarket -  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVo_cS_XdL8" rel="nofollow -  1991: Manuel Göttsching - Dream and Desire -  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wF7JDLIauKE&t=1206s" rel="nofollow - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wF7JDLIauKE&t=1206s

All four albums are notable for featuring the combined talents of guitarist Manuel Goettsching, although I'm sure any aficionados of Krautrock will know that already. Wink

You're too far out now, Cristi, and in fact I've written to you already everything, I can say about the present problems between us. Or more rightly speaking, I don't think, we can have further honest and more clarifying dialogue due to your position.
(Edit: Or at least it didn't seem so - even as I see it, it should be possible.)

So, I certainly want to better the situation between us, but it can only happen in the forum.

My position? I honestly don't know what you think "my position" is here.
I got mocked continuously by another user for three days. And it upset me. That is my only position.

Somehow in all of this, you ended up being upset with me. I got no problem with you, how and why you ended up in the middle of this? I do not know.

So, I certainly want to better the situation between us, but it can only happen in the forum.

And I can tell you here that much as what you wrote to me in the last to PMs is not the right direction. Ouch

I'm very sorry about the way it went, Cristi, and I'd like very much to come back to the good relationship from before,
but you have to compromise.

Again, I don't have a problem with you in any way, never did.

Let's leave it at that (you can still PM me), enough off-topic-ness. Let's get back to Krautrock and German prog.

I’m surprised … unless I’m mistaken … that no one has mentioned Kraftwerk. I like Autobahn, The Man-Machine, Computer World, and Electric Cafe.

I know. I’m stuck in a retro time warp. Just please leave me here in peace.

Well, I can tell you that much, Jake, as I've had a period of being very fond of Autobahn, but that was many years ago - and yet I hope, it was peacefull enough. Wink

Can - everything up to and including Soon Over Babaluma. Tago Mago being the favourite. I think I said it somewhere else already, but it's combination of beauty and chaos rarely heard.

Neu! - debut, 2 and '75. I like them all equally.

Kraftwerk - everything starting from Autobahn. Trans-Europa Express is probably the one I like most.

I used to like Faust, Amon Düül (both), Guru Guru, Agitation Free and such in the past, but can't really stand them anymore.

edit: oh, while I'm at it, I'd like to mention a few (relatively) new Finnish bands very much influenced by different variants of Krautrock: Circle, Ektroverde, Verde, Eturivi and Avarus. They're all quite varied and to me very much hit and miss, but you might want to check them out. They're all in PA database so go from there or google or whatever.

I didn't just for the formalist reason that they're not listed under Krautrock here. Their first albums should qualify for sure (and are in fact listworthy), but Mensch Maschine, which is my favourite, is rather correctly classified as electronic.

Understood. Thank you for the clarification.

Why did you think it was necessary to explain the joke? LOL

Paul could not resist the urge to try and mock me. It's like a bad itch for him at this point. LOL
Thanks for your charming, warm and friendly Private Message yesterday. I'll add you to my Buddy List. Big smile

or you could have replied, that would have been the right thing to do, but you confirm what i was thinking, you do not want to work things out, you want the mockery to continue. Otherwise why would you bring the discussion back in the open forum. You are not the victim here, you never were, you are the aggressor.

PM me if you want to work things out, otherwise the off-topic-ness is ruining this otherwise nice thread.

Let’s try to be kind and respectful here folks. You’re scaring the newbies (and oldbies) away.
