I guess I'm not the only prog fan who would love to have some of his favourite albums in vinyl, but just cannot get their hands on one, or doesn't want to pay hundreds of US$/€ for a second hand copy.  I am wondering: how difficult would it be to run a crowdfunding campaign, and present the project to the label/copyright holders once the goal has been achieved?

In case it's not clear: let's say I want to have the Bacamarte "Depois do fim" record on vinyl, but don't want to shell out $150 for a VG+ copy.   One could set-up a Kickstarter-like campaign, and if/when e.g. 350 copies are pre-ordered, present the ready business-case to the copyright holders.  They would be able to profit a bit off a short production run, at 0 risk, and nearly no work at all (the label would still have to deliver the original artwork to the print shop and the masters to the plant).

And for those wondering, yes I am aware that one "could" illegally have a single record lathe-cut made, but someone needs to provide the digital files, which are probably either a CD-rip of a master done for CD, or even worse sources.  And not legal.  I am thinking of an idea that could be scaled, official, and sustainable in the longer run for collector communities.

I think quite a few small 'cottage' industry labels have done something similar; ie 'Fruits de mer', 'Rise Above' and various others but i guess they've gone direct to the artists first.. i suppose they stump up the initial funds so their is some small risk involved.. Maybe approach a few of the small labels with the idea and see what they say? 'Replica' the French Prog/ Avant label seem to re-issue all sorts of very obscure euro material in 500 runs. I think the whole process has got much more complicated since the major labels have taken up all the pressing plants time/output churning out Coldplay and Beyonce for the foreseeable futureWink

Interesting, I didn't know any of these small labels. Tons of quite obscure material, probably worth exploring.  My idea is obviously not new, as it's almost exactly what you're saying these labels do: reissue in small runs, going directly to the rights owners.  I'll send messages to these folks, see if it awakes any interest.  Low hopes, I guess.
