I have often wondered whether or not ABBA can be considered prog or at the very least prog related.
Consider the facts:-they had a keyboard player and he often played synthesiser, the band sometimes wore shiny metallic-looking outfits, they sang about epic events like battles (Waterloo),the bands name was made up of the bands initials just like ELP was!!!

Lets have them in there along with all that other goth, death, bluegrass, melodic death, death goth, jazz death, gospel goth we have been discussing lately etc etc

Anyone agree ??

You're going to be shot down in flames for that!

But I understand completely where you're coming from.

On ABBA The Album there is a suite, and "Eagle" is at least semi-prog in the fine orchestration and overall feel. The standard of the instumentation and vocals leaves many prog bands in the shade.

And I know that maani is a big fan of "Dancing Queen"

Those facts are so very superficial... not even prog-pop.

Now, having said that, the two writing/producing guys would have made some good prog music had they set their minds into it. The keyboard player had much finesse, not unlike the keyboardist of Kayak or Bo Hansson, while the guitar player could writ some damn good folk-oriented melodies: he would have made a good rhythm guitarist-backing vocalist. These two guys could have led or been part of a symphonic prog band, something like Atlas-meets-Kayak-Renaissance. But they didn't because they didn't want to - period.

Another example: had Jeff Beck given his virtuousity and energy as a guitarist an extra touch of classicism and had he had a major taste for complex rhythm patterns and extended sonic experimentations, he would have made a damn good prog guitar player, something like Page-meets-Akkerman-meets-Holdsworth. But his musical ideology was very clear: either I do psychodelic hard rock or jazz-rock, nothing else.
An example of a similar guitarist with a real prog sensibility? -- Steve Morse!!

   Regards.

GAAAAAAHHHH

Why does this topic exists?!?

*going ouside to vomit*

*return*

Ok, as mentioned, Björn & Benny could do prog if they had wanted to. But instead they teamed up with two pop-girls. Anne-Frid has in fact made the worst pop-song ever, a cover of Bowies 'Life on Mars' with swedish lyrics wich left me with stomache, but that's another story.

Abba is a pop group (and swedens largest sea-food company) who have more in common with dance music, imho the opposite of prog.

Good you brought your kevlar vests, because me and my machine gun is going downtown

I've always thought of ABBA as a prog band in denial - just listen to some
of the complexity of their hit singles (notably the superb "Knowing Me,
Knowing You"). I also believe that very many prog fans could enjoy much
of their work - I know I do. But they're certainly not prog per se - the only
overtly progressive tracks of their career were "Intermezzo No. 1", "Eagle"
and "The Visitors".

Ultimately, ABBA suffered from the malaise of all too many pop bands -
they concentrated heavily on producing great singles, and consequently
included inordinate amounts of crap on their albums. None of their many
LPs is consistently good ("Super Trouper" being probably the best),
although all contain something of excellence.

Even the album with the most highpoints, "Arrival" ("Knowing Me,
Knowing You", "Dancing Queen", "Tiger", "Money, Money, Money" and the
title track) contains two songs so badly composed (especially the lyrics)
as to make me howl with laughter - "When I Kissed The Teacher" and
"Dum Dum Diddle" (subject matter: the writer wishes he were a violin).

But ABBA are certainly closer to EARTH & FIRE than, say, ACE OF BASE or
STEPS, to name just two dreadful bubblegum pop acts with whom they
are often compared.

Horza (and others),

Please start threads in the correct sections. The prog music lounge is only for bands currently listed in the archives.

Discussions on whether bands should be added shoudl take place in "Bands and albums", where I've moved this thread to.

Some people do struggle with irony don't they?

Plus I thought some of Steve Howe's finest work is on the track  "Super Tropper"

How much more proggy can you get?

If it's prog enough for Alan's psychedelic breakfast, it's prog enough for me

I hope your not trying to insult me for trying to add The Who. I agree that Black Sabbath, Zep, and Cream are stretches, but under close examination The Who are prog.

Definitely not - but remember that Andrew Lloyd Webber produced "Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat" (the 1st Rock Opera), so if the Who are here, Andrew Lloyd Webber MUST also be included.

"Jesus Christ Superstar" has the greatest story ever told as its core, and some versions have Ian Gillan and other prog musicians playing... and it's miles better as a rock opera than "Tommy", in that it's actually an opera with recitative and aria and stuff.

Then there's ALW's Variations on a theme of Paganini, performed mainly by Colosseum II and part of Genesis, which is actually rather good.

So I'm not kidding about ALW.

Would you want ALW in the archives?

Well, let's make it a bit harder. Is Chess prog? Chess, you know, the concept album by the 2 Abba gentlemen and... I believe it was Tim Rice?

Okay, that's an easy one, isn't it? The answer is of course...

No! The album is not bad though... It's almost a bridge between Abba and prog.

Don't you think?
