Welcome back my friends to that show that never ends. Man both are legendary albums, but I got to go with BSS for now. That also is not BS, it is Beautiful Synthesizer Sounds.

Brain Salad Surgery is my obvious choice here, but I do maintain that Love Beach isn't entirely as bad as some people make it out to be. There are serious duds on it of course (The Gambler being the biggest example imo), but most of the record is just decent, inoffensive pop rock with a few prog touches. Plus, some of the piano sections in the Memoirs suite are quite beautiful.

If anything, In the Hot Seat is the band's real rock bottom as far as I'm concerned Smile

Also, Brain Salad Surgery is not even my favorite ELP LOL

I'd like to hear the rationale of those two bleak souls who voted for Love Beach. Is it due to having a thing for chest hair and man nipples? LOL

When Keith Emerson stated the album was "an embarrassment against everything I've worked for," then perhaps you might question your discernment of music.

Love Beach is definitely the more consistent and 'together' record. It showed the band at it's most mature able to avoid the abstract pretentious lyrics for a more down to earth approach. BSS just has so many annoying parts as the band is playing at odds with itself and the over use of Moog just glosses over the issues. Love Beach is the 5 star masterpiece , Keith was obviously high on something to not recognise it at the time.

Yep!

At least Hot Space was an attempt to try something new. And while it didn't always work (there's some really cringey stuff on it), there were quite a few tracks I still enjoyed - Action This Day, Staying Power, Under Pressure, Put Out the Fire, etc. Not to mention, the album was one of the biggest inspirations for Michael Jackson's Thriller - that's gotta count for something!

The Works on the hand, is so desperate to recapture past glories in my opinion. Man on the Prowl is just discount Crazy Little Thing Called Love, and Radio Ga Ga captures all the worst aspects of 80s pop rock. There are still a few good tracks like Hammer to Fall and I Want to Break Free, but The Works is the one Queen album I never want to revisit whenever I marathon their discog.

Yeah sorry, I'm kinda passionate when discussing Queen. They're in my top 5 bands of all time LOL

I also love Queen, always have.
I've always loved Radio Gaga, never had any issue with it. Also best song on The works is the overlooked Keep Passing the Open Windows, the hidden gem of the album.

Glad to see another Queen lover here; I actually vouched for a long time for them to become a full-fledged prog band on the site. Obviously that never happened LOL

In any case, I respect your opinion. And I do enjoy a lot of their later work in general. The Miracle has excellent tracks like Breakthru and I Want It All, not to mention the kickass closer Was It All Worth It. Meanwhile, Innuendo is one of my top 5 Queen albums ever. Such a great way to go out for Freddie Big smile

It's not particularly funny, Queen are a prog-related band here. I don't think many people would argue that they are a prog band.

That's not what I meant; I'm fine with them being a prog-related band. It just kinda amused me that the album rated so much higher than a lot of bands who are actually considered prog on the site.

Of course Brain Salad Surgery, which probably the best, or at least the most balanced studio album of them. However I also think that Love Beach isn't as bad as many consider. For instance, Works II is worse.

Love Beach has some decent if cheesy pop songs, but that is not what we are interested in as proggers, is it? Memoirs shows some serious attempt at composition but it ultimately falls flat on its face. Very ungentlemanly. I suspect its votes were done in irony or a means to balance out the poll. BSS is the one in all seriousness.

Inspired by this poll, for the first time I gave two songs from Love Beach a try, namely Canario and Memoirs... Canario is listenable but I'm not particularly keen on it. Memoirs is rather good if somewhat too long for the substance. Given that people say the others are far worse, I'm not really motivated to listen to the rest, although at least listening to these two wasn't exactly an ordeal.

Saying please, please, please
My friend said I should call

And to tell the truth
I could use some company
So come closer to me

Order peaches and cream
I like my dessert first
If you know what I mean

Around the maze of pleasure
To the gates of pain
You're driving me insane

Oh dear...

That ELP would present such lyrics isn't surprising for band that named an album Brain Salad Surgery, which refers to oral sex on a man (note the suggestive Giger album cover). I don't find the lyrics to "Taste My Love" witty or erotic, but very distasteful -- crude and problematic (doubt many feminists would appreciate them). This points to a general feeling I have about ELP generally and is a reason why I don't much like the band (I quite like the debut), and it is that I find the band vulgar.

Shouldn't this poll be JFF? It is just for fun, isn't it?

"Brain Salad Surgery" by far for me. I even rate BSS ahead of "Close To The Edge" and "Selling England By The Pound".    I expect I'm in a minority though.

Strange poll - it's not April 1.

Brain Salad Surgery, of course.

You nailed exactly why I think it's such a silly song: it's not witty at all. Those lyrics are nothing short of overt. As in "how many ways can I describe a sex act, without or without metaphor." Not sure why Lake and Sinfield stooped to that level. At least the title of BSS was cryptic for the time.

I choose to believe that the same three people who voted for Love Blecch just voted for it again. What a bunch of masochists! LOL

I think they are just sympathy votes, because they know that Love Beach sucks, but chooses to vote it, simply so it could have a vote.

It's good to have differences in musical opinion but voting against BSS here just to be different doesn't make much sense to me.

Is this poll for real? And I'm not even particularly a fan of Brain Salad.

Also, Brain Salad Surgery is not even my favorite ELP LOL

I bet it's Tarkus, though I'll be delighted if you say it's the debut. Wink

It is Tarkus (despite a few questionable songs on side B), although the debut is my second favorite Big smile And then BSS and Trilogy are fighting for the third spot after that

I have to ask: Weren't you in California yesterday? Big smile

Somehow I forgot to change my location all this time. Since I'm a collaborator now, I suppose I should update a few things LOL

I nearly fell off my chair when ELP appeared on Top Of The Pops ... next to Sarah Brightman and Hot Gossip in the running order as well. Totally surreal. Carl seems to be enjoying himself , Emerson less so LOL

I could have cast a comedy vote for LB - which isn't quite as bad musically as some make out - but voted for BSS.

When ELP appeared on Top of the Pops promoting All I Want is You me and my brother rolled up the legs of our trousers and showed our knees to the screen as a sign of our dissatisfaction with the band's new musical direction.
