After looking at Poland, I think it would be very appropriate with the rest of the Eastern Europe - if that has had your interest, as well. I'd like to include Greece here because otherwise, I doubt it would be listed.

I'm sure, this will be quite exiting, too, and beginning with my list, still one album per band and unranked:

                        Fermáta  (Slovakia)  -  Pieseň z Hôľ  (1977)

Collegium Musicum  (Slovakia)  -  Divergences  (1983)

Solaris  (Hungary)  -  Marsbeli Kronikak  (1984)

Kornelyans  (Serbia)  -  Not an Ordinary Life  (1974)

                        Phoenix  (Romania)  -  Cantofabule  (1975)

                        Aphrodite’s Child  (Greece)  -  666  (1972)

                        P.L.J. Band  (Greece)  -  Armageddon  (1982)

Ciccada  (Geece)  -  A Child In The Mirror  (2010)

                        Naxatras  (Greece)  -   Naxatras  (2015)

”Arsenal” Ensemble  (Russia)  -  Svoimi Rukami

/ Created with their own Hands  (1983)

The “Gunesh” Ensemble  (former USSR)  -  Looking At The Earth  (1984)

Vespero  (Russia)  -   By the Waters of Tomorrow  (2010)

YMMV, IMHO

I can't speak for the thread opener, but to me, it seems anything east of the old Iron Curtain and Yugoslavia and Greece (& Cyprus) sound "Eastern European" - though I'm not sure I would include the three Baltic countries.

That was what I was wondering. Where the line was drawn. So Baltics out, but Belarus (for example), in?

Right, I shall have to put some thought into it, as I think I have rather a lot of Eastern European music on my iPod…..

Yes, please very much, Nick, otherwise I don't really understand the point of your list.

Maybe you're just kidding with this "work out", but if not and it showed to be possible, I'd appreciate see you shortening your post.

- But okay, anyway, you showed the richness of the Eastern Europe musical world, and maybe how overwhelming the present (global) communication possibilities can be.

I guess the point of my post, if there were one at all, would have been to illustrate the difficulty I would have to list my favourite 12 East European albums. This list is just from my iPod, and I can probably find more if I look on my external hard drive, or within my CDs.

I understand when people ask for favourite releases from one country, but as soon as you get into greater regions, I find it kind of crazy! I mean, I find it difficult enough to find my 12 favourite albums from just one country!

Also, consider that, because of the way you worded the question, I didn’t include the 42 artists from Poland that are on my iPod. But ultimately that was not the point of my post, even if that’s a point that could be made from my list.

I wasn’t kidding about working out what my 12 favourites are from my list. Why would I have been? Ultimately, I will find it easier to work out my favourite 12, if I have a list to work from.

I think, also, that my list is going to be subject to recency bias, and deliberately so - simoly because it is easier to create a list of 12, if I go by what I’m most enjoying at the moment, rather than attempt to work out an all-time favourite.

I think there are 20 Ukrainian artists and 30 Russian on my iPod, so I could work out a top 12 from Ukraine, and another top 12 from Russia. I’ve already mentioned the 42 Polish artists, and I’ve still not worked out my favourite albums from them!

It’s no criticism on my part, and I meant no point by my list except to assist me, but if you see my list as pointless, I won’t argue that, except to say that what is the point in anything? It’s subjective, of course. I see no point in attempting to work out my 12 favourite East European albums, but I’m still doing it….. 🤷🏻‍♂️

The list is getting shorter. 😜

I own albums by five of those (all Russian or Belarusian), and Five Storey Ensemble is one of those - and also one I missed off my list, as I guess they are either not on my iPod, or my eye missed them as I was scrolling. Given I generally like most of what you do, I shall have to check out the others. I don’t think I’ve ever listened to a Vangelis album before, and I think I can name only two tracks of his that I have heard.

Hi,

In the film BEFORE THE RAIN (Macedonia) ... there was some music by a band called Anastasia that to my knowledge never really existed. That opening piece was excellent and set a great mood for the film, and it is a shame that there was not more music or an album by such a band. I would have bought that album! And instead I got the soundtrack to the film!

It was an opening that reminded me of the way we looked at "AGUIRRE" ... you just sat there and ... went wow ... before the whole thing even started ... a hypnotic experience, you could say!

The way I see it, is to tell others about some of one's personal favourites so, they might get inspired to give them a listen, or at least so they get acquainted with one's taste.
Something else quite important as I see it, is to put focus on some countries which otherwise may not get so much attention.
Edit:
In my case, "the choosing of the favourites" was pretty easy here because I just listed those 12 albums, I've found being fond of over the (many) years.

Yes, and that is why I am playing along - because I enjoy looking at others’ lists, and learning of new things.

I also completely agree with putting focus on countries that otherwise may not get so much attention. But, I guess, I’m not positive this is the best way to do it? Poland is part of Eastern Europe, but had its own post. I feel like other Eastern European countries could also have had their own posts, too. By asking for favourite albums from the whole of Eastern Europe, rather than individual countries within that area (as was the case for Poland), then several countries will still be under-represented in the lists, simply because of “big guns” like Russia.

There are several Eastern European countries for which I know no music, and I’d love to be directed to music from those countries.

By the way, my list is till getting shorter….. 😜

Yes, I can see the problem and inequality, but I did it with my own collection and preferences as the starting point, and others can try to do threads with the other countries individually. I can tell about myself that I have other plans, and no more albums I'm fond of from Eastern Europe.

Just a suggestion!

Eastern Europe is a HUUUUUGE landmass and not well defined

I would break down these "prog zones" as such

Russia

Ukraine, Belarus & Moldova

Baltic States (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania)

Central nations (Poland, Hungary, Czech Rep, Slovakia)

Balkan nations (Romania, Bulgaria, Albania & Former Yugoslavia [Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia])

Greece if counted should really be in its own category possibly with Turkey which has a sliver of territory that is considered Europe (even though the Eurasian landmass is divided solely for cultural purposes.)

As for choosing albums, way too many for me to count.

Some would also included Caucus nations such as Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan as Eastern Europe but seems a stretch in my view considering the Caucus range is technically what divides Europe from Asia.

Also Eastern Germany which used to be considered Eastern Europe could be thrown into the Central nations category.

Not to comment the details in your suggestion, but if you have several threads in your mind, I don't think it's realistic.
Otherwise, see my comment to Nick, just above your post.

I included the Caucasus, as it is the border region - though I know only one Georgian artist, and only two Armenian artists, and seems to be far more accepted as part of Eastern Europe than the Baltic states, which are almost always not included.

I also included Austria in the Central nations, as the this was roughly the Austro-Hungarian empire.

I definitely agree that Eastern Europe is far too great an area otherwise. Using your breakdowns would make my lists more similar in size, too. I had 30 Russian artists on my iPod, and 20 Ukrainian. If I add the Belarusian to the Ukrainian I would have 30 for there, too (as I have nothing from Moldova).

Apart from Slovakia, the Central region would be larger from Poland alone (a good 40+ artists on my iPod), with Hungary and Czech both fighting for second, Austria firmly in fourth place, and Slovakia trailing far behind with nothing in my collection that I can think of.

The Balkans are by far the least represented with not too much in my collection from Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia and Montenegro, and nothing at all from Albania, Kosovo and North Macedonia.

Oof, this is clearly not a part of the world with whose prog scene I'm very acquainted... I already had to cheat with two artists that aren't even in PA (yet) as well as some artists from Austria and Finland which can barely be considered "Eastern Europe", and still I can't even finish a top 12 with albums that I'm familiar enough with for me to put on a list like this. Here goes, anyway...

1. Vangelis - Blade Runner (Greece)
2. Stevan Kovacs Tickmayer - Cold Peace Counterpoints (Serbia)
3. Hermann Szobel - Szobel (Austria)
4. Missigno - Binary Digit Temple (Greece)
5. Tigran Hamasyan - The Call Within (Armenia)
6. Alex Machacek - 24 Tales (Austria)
7. Deep Turtle - There's A Vomitsprinkler In My Liverriver (Finland)
8. Den Za Den - Den Za Den (North Macedonia)
9. Czesław Niemen - Niemen Aerolit (Poland)
10. Aphrodite's Child - 666 (Greece)
11. After Crying - Overground Music (Hungary)

It looks fine, Mirakaze, and the number 12 is just a suggestion.
I'm happy to see you include Niemen Aerolit, as I find it being a very fine album, and you're the first one to do it.

I surely like to see Solaris - Marsbéli krónikák, progadvaark, and even as #1 indeed doesn't make it worse.

Happy that the East of Europe is asked as such a big piece of earth, as I really know too little. I reach 12 entries from different artists with a little help of communist East Germany and solo projects by both members of iamthemorning.

iamthemorning - Lighthouse
After Crying - http://192.168.1.103:9000/clixmlbrowser/clicmd=browselibrary+items&mode=albums&linktitle=Artist%20%28After%20Crying%29&artist_id=11779&player=00:52:06:4c:dd:9d/index.html?mode=albums&artist_id=11779&index=1&player=00%3A52%3A06%3A4c%3Add%3A9d&sess=" rel="nofollow - Megalazottak Es Megszomoritottak
Iva Bittova's Dunaj - Dunaj
Stern Meissen - Reise zum Mittelpunkt des Menschen
The Gourishankar - 2nd Hands
Actual Music Quartet RSM - s/t
Mariana Semkina - Sleepwalking
Vezhlivy Otkaz - War Songs
Gleb Kolyadin - s/t
Riverside - Second Life Syndrome
Lift - Meeresfahrt
Vangelis - The Dragon

I just about kicked out Omega's Time Robber - quite surprised that they are not listed yet. Before I joined PA I'd have thought Omega are by far the most popular prog act from Eastern Europe except maybe Greece.

Them Moose Rush - Don't Pick Your Noise

I'd say, Omega used to be a well known band but, I guess, not so much anymore comparing to so many others.

Not including Poland, since you did a Poland thread. Russia perhaps deserves its own thread, but I'll include them since others are. Also, I don't know if they necessarily have a big enough prog scene.

Oh, I forgot Greece. Well, the Aphrodite's Child and Ciccada albums you listed would make it into this list.

After Crying - Overground Music (Hungary)
Solaris - Marsbéli krónikák (Hungary)
Horizont - Летний город (Russia)
Lost World - Awakening of the Elements (Russia)
Karfagen - Solitary Sandpiper Journey (Ukraine)
Fugato Orchestra - Neander Variations (Hungary)
Quorum - Another World (Russia)
Fermáta - Huascaran (Slovakia)
Talitha Qumi - Despre cuvinte (Romania)
Modrý Efekt & Radim Hladík - Modrý Efekt & Radim Hladík (Czech)
The Gourishankar - 2nd Hands (Russia)
The Worm Ouroboros - Of Things That Never Were (Belarus)

At the risk of upsetting David (again), I would say that Russia is very much deserving of its own thread. I suspect their prog scene is just as big as Poland’s, but more unknown. I have albums by 42 different Polish artists on my iPod, and 30 different Russian artists on my iPod. That could imply that the Polish prog scene is bigger, but I do t think that would be an accurate inference.

Investigating the Russian prog scene drew me into the Ukrainian and Belarusian prog scenes, which are likely even lesser known than the Russian prog scene. But does that mean they are not deserving of their own threads, too? Personally, I think that, too, would be a mistake.

East Europe is such a vast and ill-defined area (whose borders are as grey an area as the definitions of prog), with many quite different cultures and traditions. The music, instruments, instrumentation and influences differ greatly by region, and to clump them together is quite unfair on them all. Even more so, to my mind, if Poland has its own thread but no other does.

I haven’t really contributed to this thread, since David took umbrage with comments made by Silly Puppy and I, and I’m not sure why I’m writing this - except perhaps I have not yet had my morning coffee, and my brain is still in somewhat of a morning fog. But I would like to see people list their favourites (5, 10, 12, whatever) from each country. I have been thinking of doing so for some time now, because I find it incredibly difficult to narrow my large list of East European artists down to 12, let alone albums by those artists.

It may not be what David intended, but I think it might be helpful for anyone who is thinking of investigating the music of one country or another, rather than just a large region that often has little in common between many of the countries within, apart from being within an arbitrary region mostly defined by people outside that region.

Nick, siLLy puPPy and King C., I think to begin with you're quite right but is that talking realistic?
Because there are these two questions:
1. Will there be enough interest for (all) those threads you have in mind?
2. Who will do these threads?

And as long we don't know answers on these two questions, I think it's just best to follow my thread doing, otherwise they'll be spoiled and nothing better will happen.
So, Nick, I must say I'm not quite sure of the intention with your long posts.
I think, why don't you just start a new thread (with siLLy puPPy) and discuss these things?

There is no need for a new thread, that I can see. This one seems to be trundling along quite nicely.

Okay, and I think you should pay some good attention to some of the comments which are made in this thread because as far as I can see there's no basis for what you would like to see:

Well, I guess it depends what you see, or perhaps what you’re looking for. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I have definitely been reading all the comments, because I love to listen to new music from different countries. Already, I have several new artists and/or albums added to my “to listen to” list.

As for individual country lists, I see them as a means to an end. You see, believe it or not, I a, trying to work out my favourite 12 albums from East Europe. It feels like a near impossible task for me, due to the sheer number of albums I have from that region. Thus, breaking it down into individual countries serves a dual purpose:

1) It might allow people following this thread who have not investigated music yet from that country some interest in doing so; but, more pertinent to your interests,

2) It will make my job of coming up with a top 12 for East Europe easier, as inevitably the albums near the top of each country’s lists will likely be the ones that make my final 12.

So, with that in mind, here are my first three lists. Each has a different number, based upon how many artists I know and enjoy from that country. I wanted to list no more than a third of the number of artists from any one country. I’ve also stuck to only one album per artist, in order to provide greater variety, regardless of how much I might love more than one album per artist. Each list also has a great deal of deliberate recency bias. This is because these are my favourites at this time, and so more recent releases are topping the lists (regardless of how much I might like older albums from these countries).

Belarus

1. Mission Jupiter - Talk To Me
2. Massen - ContrAesthetic
3. Asymmetry - Anima
4. ZVM - ZVM

Russia

1. Compassionizer - An Ambassador in Bonds
2. Detieti - In General Terms
3. Grey Mouse - A Moment of Weakness
4. Fair Wind Pleases - The Wind of the Season
5. Ciolkowska - Psychedelia
6. Mariana Semkina - Sleepwalking
7. The Grand Astoria - From the Great Beyond
8. iamthemorning - The Bell
9. Echoes and Signals - Mercurial
10. Existentia - The Planet in the Universe

Ukraine

1. Dreadnought in the Pond - 0=1
2. Shiva the Destructor - Find the Others
3. La Horsa Bianca - Diluvian Beat
4. Victor Go - Tales from McIntyre Lake
5. White Ward - Love Exchange Failure
6. Soom - Djebars
7. Straytones - Magic Green River Swimmin’ & Stunning Tanzanka Experience

Three more countries. As per the last three, these lists are one album per artist for greater variety. As per the last three, there is deliberate recency bias. As per the last three, the number of albums in each list varies as a reflection of how much I have in my collection from the country. Unlike the last three, where the number listed was no more than a third of the total artists from any country, Bulgaria and Romania here represent more than a third, simply because I figured a list should have a minimum of three albums. (Hungary, though, sticks to the rule of a third.)

Bulgaria

1. Daniel Eliseev Project - Lost Humanity
2. Morrum - Death of Amazement
3. smallman - Labyrinth of Present

Hungary

1. Sauropoda - Pangea
2. River Flows Reverse - When River Flows Reverse
3. Ghost Toast - Shape Without Form
4. Ajna - Rengeteg

Romania

1. Exit Oz - Împamântenit
2. White Walls - Grandeur
3. The Thirteenth Sun - Stardust

I don't know what you mean by 'old definition of eastern Europe", but even geographically, looking at the map of Europe, Greece is south-eastern. Even if someone says south of Europe, I wouldn't disagree.

You may say you can't list 10 top albums of all time either, but if you can, this should for sure be able for a limited geographical range, whatever it is?

And whether you can, in my view, doesn't really depend on the overall number of albums that you have, but rather on whether you are happy (and ruthless) enough to be selective. Obviously nobody has to, but the willingness to play the game in my view has nothing to do with size of the set from which you select. (Or rather, I couldn't pay the game for single countries such as Romania of which I'd be happy to know three - heck, I'm even too weak to play Poland and I'm for sure not proud if it! So having Eastern Europe as a single category and even Latin America is fine for me even though I am happy to acknowledge that it's my personal lack of knowledge rather than fault of these countries.)

The process of finding favourites is very easy for me, as well, as I've done that over the really many years, I've been interested in music, and my collection today only consists of my "favourites" (in fact, it's just albums I'm fond of), about 450. I've made a list of all of them, beginning many years ago, which I now just update. So, listing my favourites here for different countries has only required a bit of work, as well.

I assume they mean the countries of the former Eastern Bloc, of which Greece was not a part.

Personally, while I'm all for inclusivity, I am a bit confused by the mention of Firyuza, a band from Turkmenistan...

Wasn't the "Eastern Block" a name the westerners gave that region during the Cold War? Political indeed.
But since Greece is in south-east Europe, it can be included here.
