Very much inspired by Paul's German personal top list, I've got this idea for an Italian top 12, and surely best with one album per band to give good possibility for as many bands as possible.
So, beginning with mine in unranked order:

Alphataurus   Alphataurus  (1973)

Area  Crac!  (1975)

Banco del Mutuo Soccorso   Io Sono Nato Libero  (1973)

De De Lind   Io Non So Da Dove Vengo…  (1972)

Il Balletto di Bronzo   Ys  (1972)

Le Orme   Felona e Sorona  (1973)

Metamorfosi  Inferno  (1973)

Museo Rosenbach   Zarathustra   (1973)

Premiata Forneria Marconi   Per Un Amico  (1972)

Procession   Frontiera   (1972)

Quella Vecchia Locanda    Quella Vecchia Locanda  (1972)

Quella Vecchia Locanda    Il Tempo della Gioia  (1974)

Semiramis   Dedicato a Frazz  (1973)

And hardly avoiding to add:

Banco del Mutuo Soccorso   Darwin!  (1972)

I'm not very familiar with spaghetti prog, so I'll have to pass on this one, but it's good to know I inadvertently provided the inspiration for David's list. I've still got my hands full at the moment with my Krautrock and Dutch clog prog blogs, so it could be awhile before I dip my toes into Italian prog too. Addio per ora. Embarrassed

I'm not sure, it's that simple, Paul. I know it's ment as fun, but I surely think it's best to avoid that kind.

Hi,

Poor taste perhaps, or maybe just al dente, but since I thought of this response...

If you can get pasta certain language barrier, then the linguiniistics shouldn't be too much of an impediment to both listen to and understand the spaghetti.

Shall we call English Prog "bangers and mash" Prog?

I'd love to include Ennio Morricone and Egisto Macchi for my list, but will stick with ones in PA.

Franco Leprino - Integrati ... Disintegrati
Franco Battiato - Sulle corde di Aries
Area - Caution Radiation Area
Dedalus - Dedalus
Fabio Frizzi - L'aldila
Picchio dal Pozzo - Picchio dal Pozzo
Goblin - Profondo rosso
Sensation's Fix - Portable Madness
Perigeo - Genealogia
Il Balletto di Bronzo - Ys
Banco del Mutuo Soccorso - Banco del Mutuo Soccorso
Osanna - Palepoli

I'll also do only one album per artist, otherwise there'll just be a bunch of Area albums all at the top:

1. Area - Caution Radiation Area
2. Premiata Forneria Marconi - Per Un Amico
3. Homunculus Res - Limiti All'Eguaglianza Della Parte Con Il Tutto
4. Yugen - Iridule
5. Arti & Mestieri - Giro Di Valzer Per Domani
6. Picchio Dal Pozzo - Picchio Dal Pozzo
7. Dedalus - Dedalus
8. Maxophone - Maxophone
9. D.F.A. - Lavori In Corso
10. Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso - Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso
11. Breznev Fun Club - Il Misantropo Felice
12. Museo Rosenbach - Zarathustra

NichelOdeon's latest album might make it into this list too from what I've heard, but I need to listen to it more attentively before my mind is fully made up on it.

Also, as someone from "clog prog"'s country of origin I can say I do not feel the slightest bit offended by the term and I doubt any other Dutch person would be; even if it weren't used in good fun it's too silly to be upset over, although I certainly don't wish to discourage anyone who disagrees, or any German or Italian users who find the other two terms used to be inappopriate, from speaking up if they do.

that is no excuse though to come up with new mocking terms...
It's more often the case that I'm usually the one who gets mocked here (not unfairly, it has to be said)  for my somewhat eccentric tastes in music. Tongue

don't change the subject, not in this context...

Come on, guys, I think everybody has made his point in this discussion, no reason to keep on.

so what was Paul's point? Throw some mockery and see if he can get away with it? Well, he's won then.

I was lucky to travel to Italy 5 times between 2013 - 2019, visiting a record store in Rome with my cousins (i think it was Laziale) i found a lot of material of classic and modern RPI.

My cousins are fans of progresive rock, and specially of the material released by AltRock records and Mellow records, my first encounter with Accordo dei contrari was with the album AdC

There's much to like from the Italian prog scene. It's still a vibrant place for prog rock today. As you can see, I mixed it up with some more modern acts from the last 20 years or so. I always look forward to hearing new releases that come from there.

It's good to hear that opinion, but I must say, it has been difficult for me to find something post-70's I like - though not impossible.
But then, I can say, it has been even more difficult for me regarding German post-70's albums.

I wonder which other country polls we'll see. Making a top 12 of French and Japanese prog albums should be a piece of cake; I could probably still hold my own making a list of Canadian, Swedish, Belgian and maybe Norwegian albums; after that it gets tricky.

Actually, I've planned a French one in a couple of days while a Japanese one was done not so long ago. I've seen it in "Top 10s and lists".
And it sounds fine with your plans, I'll remember that.
Edit:
I could be tempted to make (maybe a smaller) Polish one as well.

1. IL BALLETTO DI BRONZO  Ys   (1972)  (The best; the gold standard; the most powerful and unique Italian release of the 1970s.)

2. PICCHIO DAL POZZO   Picchio dal Pozzo  (1976) * (I consider Picchio Dal Pozzo a Canterbury band, not an RPI band.)

3. PREMIATA FORNERIA MARCONI   Per Un Amico   (1972) (So compositionally rich with near-perfect contributions from each and every band member throughout.)

4. AREA  Crac!  (1975) * (I consider Area a Jazz-Rock Fusion band, not an RPI band--and this to be the best J-R Fusion album of all-time.)

5. CERVELLO  Melos   (1973) (Incredibly adventurous/creative compositions! And Corrado Rustici was only 17 years old!)

6. AREA  Arbeit Macht Frei   (1973)  (If we're insistent upon considering Area an RPI band, we simply cannot discount this landmark album.)

7. ARTI E MESTIERI  Tilt   (1974) (I would also argue that this band/album is miscategorized: it should be considered a Jazz-Rock Fusion album.)

8. MAXOPHONE  Maxophone   (1975)

9. IL ROVESCIO DELLA MEDAGLIA  Contaminazione   (1973) (The perfect exhibition of one of the main goals of the early progressive rock movement: to blend classical instrumentation and composition with rock attributes.)

10. FRANCO BATTIATO  Sulle corde di Aries   (1973)

11. IL PAESE DEI BALOCCHI  Il Paese dei Balocchi   (1972)

Metamorfosi  Inferno   (1973)

Procession    Frontiera   (1972)

New Trolls Concerto Grosso per i New Trolls (1971)

** I would have included some 21st Century album releases if I thought any were as important and/or good as these.

I have not yet compiled a list of my Italian prog ranking.

For now I can only say this:

I don't think there is a better album than Area's Arbeit Macht Frei.

I consider it an absolute masterpiece of contemporary music, and it is not an album belonging to the tradition of Italian prog (melodic, symphonic), it belongs to jazz-rock and the avant-garde.

Area have produced another true masterpiece, Maledetti (in addition to Caution Area and Crac, remarkable albums but in my opinion not great masterpieces).

Area therefore is candidate for the best Italian prog group.

After them I think there are Stormy Six who, with the albums L'Apprendista and Macchina Maccheronica, have produced two RIO masterpieces. Neither, however, touches the top of Arbeit Macht Frei.

In third position I think there is Banco, with two masterpieces, the debut album and Darwin - and another great Lp Nato Libero.

PFM, in my opinion an overrated group, boasts only a true masterpiece, Storia di un Minuto. For a friend it doesn't seem like a real masterpiece.

Rosenbach Museum boasts a jewel like Zarathistra which, however, is not in my Top 10 as well as Le Orme boasts two small masterpieces, such as Collage and Felona and Sorona, but there are many better albums (IMMO)

Perhaps, Balletto di Bronzo and Osanna are the best bands after Banco.

But the albums by The Trip, Claudio Rocchi, Cervello, Pholas Dactylus, Perigeo, Battiato, Quella Vecchia Locanda, Picchio Dal Pozzo, Un Biglirtto per l'Inferno, Metamorfosi, Arti e Mestieri, Goblin, Maxophone must be evaluated well.

This is my opinion,

All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

Sorry, I thought you were funny.
Edit:
But you were funny.
And maybe I've got to be more carefull with my misunderstanding.

Although admittedly, I'm not very familiar with Italian prog, I'm looking forward to David's Japanese prog poll, as that's something I DO know a little about. Sayonara. Smile

I didn't say it was your fault, it's just that every thread I look at these days seems to have you two bickering about something. LOL

What is the meaning of it, Cristi?

ask Paul, why ask me?
I don't want to clog up this thread by going off-topic with irrelevant posts - although it's probably too late for that already - but seeing as you asked, here's a charming Dutch clog dance for you. Smile

Awesome list--and I agree with 90% of your items--but, somehow, it feels like an entirely different world/entirely different topic!

I don't think I can go up to 12 albums, but my first choice would have to be Inferno, by Metamorfosi, which seems to be sadly overlooked on this thread. Other albums I love are Darwin from Banco and Felona e Sorona from Le Orme. And some others that I do like a lot, and with some songs among my very favorite, but that have songs that I don't really remember much, like YS from Il Balleto di Bronzo and Zarathustra from Museo Rosenbach. Oh yeah, and I usually forget them for not being among the 70's classics, but Unreal City and Logos did some great albums recently.

I find it a great concept album myself, and at least it's a part of my opening list.

Hi,

Again, I don't do albums, and I think I have not heard enough of the things listed. I'll make a decent effort to catch up!

Banco del Mutuo Soccorso
Le Orme
Premiata Forneria Marconi
Biglietto/Baffo Banfi
Franco Battiato
Goblin
Sensation's Fix
Osanna

The saddest bit for me, was the mention of OSANNA in one other post. One of the bands that helped define this genre, and the band that PG copied when his group toured Italy with them, and they are still around, although (have to check) not quite as complete as they were then, or as theatrical.

Their doing this, also helped ANGE do their thing, although theirs is more centered on Brecht and Brel in the early days, but both DEcamps never lost their theatricality in their music. I'm not sure about OSANNA's versions, as I am not as familiar with Italian Literature and the arts, other than a whole bunch of operas ... gads ... we should do a poll on that!
