Three instrumentals from three mostly song-based bands in Prog Archives.

Gentle Giant - "The Boys in the Band"

Van der Graaf Generator - "Theme One" (a George Martin cover)

Cardiacs - "All His Geese Are Swans!"

-------------
"Questions are a burden to others; answers a prison for oneself" (The Prisoner, 1967).

but Alucard has vocals... Confused
tough choice between GG and VDGG. I'll make a choice eventually. Embarrassed

Oops, been too long, will change it to Boys in the Band. Fixed, been many years since I last listened to the full album and that track and I forgot the vocals in Alucard. GG I expect to get the most votes by far if many people vote, but I love that Cardiacs track (I'm perhaps too obviously something of a fanboy when it comes to the band, mind you, one could have said the same of me with VdGG and GG).

I'll take GG's original over the VDGG cover despite being a bigger fan of VDGG.

The Boys In The Band is one of my favorite GG tracks.

Gentle Giant here! One of my favorite GG cuts, let alone Octopus tracks.

Not a fair fight: Cardiacs never got signed to a major label like the other two bands so their wonderful track here will get overlooked by the fans of the other two.

Easily Gentle Giant. Not sure why Theme One is here as it was written by George Martin, not VDGG, they just covered it.

VDGG.

If it was pretty much any other Cardiacs song, then it probably would have been them, but 'All his geese are swans' is not their best, in my opinion.

Cardiacs and VDGG clearly over Gentle Giant. Tough between the two. VDGG on the mood of the day.

Which at least I mentioned in the original post: "Van der Graaf Generator - "Theme One" (a George Martin cover)"

I guess it's the word "from" that you have a problem with? Funnily enough, that's why I didn't go with "by". I maxed out the character limit for the title and it didn't occur to me that someone would question why or be confused (especially since I mentioned it's a cover by George Martin). I appreciate cover songs so I don't have a problem with listing them generally. I like VdGG's cover of Theme One is mostly why I included it.

EDIT: I guess I should have put more thought into the phrasing and explaining my thought process in the OP. It could have done with some more elaboration in the OP than just mentioning that the VdGG one is a cover by George Martin, but sometimes even when I do it becomes clear that people didn't even bother to read the OP before questioning. As long as people took the time to listen to that they don't know in such polls, and at least one person finds something to enjoy, I'm happy.

Sometimes I put plenty of time and effort into my original posts, and sometimes I don't. Apologies for any confusion, Ronstein. I was rushing a bit at the time, and made a mistake with my GG choice at first. By "from" I did not mean to imply originally from in the case of VdGG, but yes it could have been phrased better, and I wish I'd put more time and thought into the OP and topic title. I am too spontaneous.

But pretty much any other Cardiacs song would not be their best either. It's not their best for me either (The Everso Closely Guarded Line, Big Ship, Dirty Boy... hard to say which one is best) but it is my favourite pure instrumental from Cardiacs

I don't know which Cardiacs is best, but from a subjective standpoint, it's one of my many favourites. I love the way it builds. Even mediocre Cardiacs is good Cardiacs for me. I guess for you not only is it not the best, or one of the best, it is one of the worst.

Mind you, I love some objectively poor stuff.

None of these instrumentals would I call the best of the bands. VdGG's is a cover, I actually don't like the GG for some reason. For me to what I find best would require not doing instrumentals.

This is a tough choice between GG and VdGG. But on this occasion, I give my vote to VdGG to help bolster their tally.

Well, between these three (all very worthy) instrumentals, my vote goes...

...to...

...Cardiacs. No, really!

Absolutely no apology necessary. As I'm familiar with all three pieces, I didn't look at the videos, so missed the fact you'd mentioned George Martin.

Well, this was tough, because they're all killer tracks.  But I had to go with the magnificent Theme One.  I already knew that George Martin had composed it.
