I was going to do this topic as your favourite bands at their best and worst for you, but then I thought this could be a more general discussion where one highlights contrasting two songs by some of your favourite bands and artists. This could be good and bad from your perspective, beautiful and ugly, calm and frenetic etc. They need not be the ones that you feel contrast the most by an artist. As I rather badly put it in a Duos of Contrast Interactive Poll, "Each of your two choices should contrast with each other (a sort of yin and yang dualist proposition). This does not mean that they must be opposites per se, such as hard vs. soft, aggressive vs. gentle, happy vs. sad, consonant vs. dissonant and so forth, but they should feel quite tonally different to you and at least provide some interesting contrast from your perspective." In this case the focus will be on contrasting music specifically coming from acts you generally enjoy and know well.

I'll start with Comus and leave others to figure out the differences between these two songs in terms of theme, style and mood. Hopefully I don't get a "Dude, what are you taking about? Those are virtually identical!" ;)

"Drip, Drip"

"Perpetual Motion"

Others that come to mind are Pink Floyd's "The Nile Song" compared to say "Goodbye Blue Sky", Magma's "Call from the Dark" compared to "Kobaia", Cardiacs' "Stoneage Dinosaurs" compared to "Two Bites of Cherry" and many others.

I'll post those Cardiacs' ones:

Symphony X: First is labyrinthine, complex, mystical, oriental and is about the ancient past. The latter is neat, simplex, metropolitan, western and modern. Oh guess which one is a love song... LOL

Mike Keneally is a treasure not discussed much on PA. First one, "Cornbread Crumb" is a jazzy song, almost a Steely Dan song. "Potato" is a fun humorous song.
