Alright, I think a lot of us were just barely scraping by in the 1983 thread, but this year looks much better, what with a new generation of RIO bands rising up and some older artists finding their way around in the new decade. I even have honourable mentions again, would you look at that? LOL

1. Rascal Reporters - Ridin' On A Bummer
2. King Crimson - Three Of A Perfect Pair
3. Cardiacs - The Seaside
4. Frank Zappa - Them Or Us
5. Talk Talk - It's My Life
6. Jean Michel Jarre - Zoolook
7. Thinking Plague - ... A Thinking Plague
8. Frank Zappa - The Perfect Stranger
9. Camel - Stationary Traveller
10. Rush - Grace Under Pressure

Honourable mentions:
- French TV - French TV
- Univers Zero - Uzed

Dead Can Dance - Dead Can Dance (it's darkwave, but I love it)
Ananda Shankar and His Orchestra - 2001
Univers Zéro - Uzed
After Dinner - After Dinner (alt. Glass Tube)
The Residents - Whatever Happened to Vileness Fats?
Camel - Stationary Traveller
Yog Sothoth - Yog Sothoth
Het - Let's Het
Gunther Olesch - Sternenmusik
Гунеш (Gunesh) - Вижу Землю

also the Dead Can Dance - Garden of the Arcane Delights EP is a beauty (and I've always owned it as a bonus on their debut album).

Spinal Tap - This is Spinal Tap
David Gilmour - About Face
REM - Reckoning
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Couldn't Stand the Weather
The Waterboys - A Pagan Place
Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense
Nanci Griffith - Once In a Very Blue Moon
Prince - Purple Rain

And...that's it. That's all I got. Absolutely dreadful year in music, even more so because 1983 was so bad.

I thought I have loads of stuff from the eighties, but most of it is indeed not prog, so this year wasn't as easy as I had expected. I was ready to list Under Wraps, which probably is my number 13 or 14 this year, yeah, I know what you think, but it's not that bad really. (After some additions I was reminded of in the meantime, it has lost a few ranks more.)

David Sylvian - Brilliant Trees
King Crimson - Three of a Perfect Pair
Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense
Univers Zero - Uzed
Mr and Mrs Smith and Mr Drake - s/t
Tim Berne & Bill Frisell - Theoretically
Camel - Stationary Traveller
Frank Zappa - A Perfect Stranger
Holger Czukay - Der Osten ist Rot
Residents - Whatever Happened to Vileness Fats

(I decided to kick Talk Talk out for Smith, Smith and Drake; not that it can't compete with the last few on the list, but it is too unprog, despite being listed here. Earlier I also had Dead Can Dance and Thinking Plague on the list but they got pushed out, too. As with Talk Talk, their better albums come later anyway.)

Another year with little to offer. Marillion's Fugazi and David Gilmour's About Face are the highlights here. John Cale's Caribbean Sunset has some fine tracks, but is hardly half as good as its predecessor. Grace under Pressure would make it to my top 10 of this year by the grace of a lack of pressure.

Another one I'd forgotten about. I did have it on some format at one time but no idea what happened to it.

I had to *baldly* go beyond the Solar System to explore the outer reaches of Rick Wakeman's long discography  to find that particular album. Smile
