I remember watching him play for West Germany at the 1970 and 1974 World Cups, and considered him to be up there with Pele and Eusebio as one of the truly great strikers of his era.

R.I.P

One of the all time greats, his record of 68 goals in 62 games for West Germany was amazing. RIP Der Bomber.

For someone who Bayern coach Tschik  Cajkovski described as 'too small and too fat' to make it in the game and didn't seem to run further than 100 metres during an entire match, Der Bomber's goal scoring record is nothing short of superhuman. 'Without Gerd Müller and his goals, we'd all still be in our little wooden hut on Säbener Straße' (Franz Beckenbauer)

He was a wizard. As a German getting into football between 1970 and 1974, a totally iconic figure. RIP.

I didn't realise he had such an amazing goals to games ratio - He also scored 547 goals in 594 competitive games during 15 years at Bayern. That is just phenomenal.

Yes, his goals to games ratio more or less meant that when you had him in your team you already led 1-0. Many coaches had three defenders looking just after Müller, yet he still scored his goals. And of course having three defenders caring for him meant there was more room for his team mates to score goals.

One of my earliest memories is Germany winning the 1974 World Cup, of course with Müller scoring the deciding goal. I was only five years old then. R.I.P.
