I Love bands such as Genesis and Pink Floyd, and am looking for recommendations for bands that sound like the two, or that a typical fan of both of these bands would like. Does anybody know of any bands like these? If so, I would greatly appreciate it if you gave me their name here. ------------- “ Italian food is my favorite food. Camel (closer to Genesis) IQ (closer to Genesis) RPWL (started out as a PF tribute band so obviously closer to PF) Eloy (closer to PF) Early King Crimson (If you like Trespass listen to their first two) Porcupine Tree before In Absentia (more PF sounding than Genesis though) Nektar (closer to PF) Alan Parson's Project (closer to PF) (start with Irobot) I can't really think of any bands who sound like a cross between the two but I did as best as I could with that list.

A massive PF fan here, so here are a few artists (excluding Genesis as you say you're already familiar with them) and key albums that I got into early on when I started exploring prog: Yes (The Yes Album, Fragile, Close to the Edge) Emerson Lake & Palmer (s/t debut, Pictures at an Exhibition, Tarkus, Trilogy, Brain Salad Surgery) Focus (Moving Waves, Focus III, Hamburger Concerto) Curved Air (Air Conditioning, Second Album, Phantasmagoria, Live) Caravan (If I Could Do It All Over Again, I'd Do It All Over You, In the Land of Grey and Pink, Waterloo Lily) Camel (Mirage, The Snow Goose, Moonmadness)

Maybe it's a bit of an assumption on my part but I would think that if he(or she) is familiar with Genesis and Pink Floyd then they are also familiar with Yes being how Yes is usually considered one of the top three or four(at the very least) prog bands. Good recommendations regardless though.

To the person above who mentioned Yes: Yeah, I listen to Yes, but would like to hear more of them. Ive heard only two of their albums, The Yes Album and Close To the Edge. Ive tried listening to Fragile, but I just really cant get into it. But yes (nice), I’m somewhat familiar with Yes.

If you want something that sounds like Genesis, I can warmly recommend the album Battlement by Neuschwanstein. Otherwise, the Belgium band Machiavel might be interesting, but mainly for their albums Jester and Mechanical Moonbeams. I think you will also enjoy Grobschnitt's Rockpommel's Land... ------------- The razamataz is a pain in the bum |

You might want to check out Karfagen from Ukraine. Mellow symphonic journeys with tons of keys and great melodies. Kind of in the sweet spot between Genesis and Pink Floyd. The exact spot Camel so wonderfully occupied. ------------- The Prog Corner |

Pink Floyd is my very favorite band... Gabriel-Genesis is one of my favorites, Top 15 band. Supertramp (non-hits).. listen to "Waiting So Long" - that guitar solo sounds just like Gilmour. In fact, once Hodgson left the band, it was Gilmour who played the guitar solo on "Brother, Where You Bound?" -Crime of the Century -Rudy -Babaji -Just A Normal Day -School -- criticizing school even before Roger Waters did! -Words Unspoken -The Meaning -Traveled and maybe you'll like their longer songs, like "Fool's Overture" Curved Air - wonderful female singer.. Listen to the songs, "Lovechild", "Dance of Love", "Dazed", etc. Illusion - Jane Relf on vocals, check out "Madonna Blue" and "Face of Yesterday" Alan Parsons Project

Better to be safe than sorry. I personally just never really heard of anyone knowing those two bands and not Yes but I suppose it's possible if they are just starting out or maybe they just don't like them. Anyway, for Yes try going for the one. If you don't like fragile I doubt tales from topographic oceans or relayer would do much for you though. The Flower Kings are a newer band you might want to give a shot though and maybe Big Big Train.

If you have liked Close to the Edge, I would think Fragile should be a safe bet. The very same line-up (my favourite line-up from any band), and actually a rather similar sound, if you ignore the solo spots... perhaps that's what you need, to ignore the solo spots (except for The Fish, for me it's just the continuation of Long Distance Runaround). If you want to hear more from Yes, then I would recommend the live albums Keys to Ascension and Symphonic Live. You will get a good selection of their best songs, and, for me, many in their best versions. |

Fragile is a safe bet, even though you’ve just been told they can’t get into it? I wouldn’t even have called it a safe bet at all. It has the same line-up, and….that’s about it. Fragile, to me, sounds nothing like CttE. I hardly ever listen to it. Tales and Relayer sound more like CttE to me than Fragile. My honest opinion is that if someone enjoys CttE, then Relayer is possibly the closest album to it. No, it does not sound the same. But it has the same three track structure, and the three tracks on each album are more or less comparable with the other album. Sound Chaser is to Relayer, for example, what Siberian Khatru is to CttE; and To Be Over is to Relayer, what And You And I is to CttE. I also think if one goes into Tales with an open mind, and disregards all the crap that has been thrown against it over the years, that it has a lot to appeal to a fan of CttE. But Fragile? No way. It’s a sh*t show of an album. It has some good songs, but nothing really hangs together. Most of the ones I immediately thought have already been mentioned. However I am a big fan of American singer/guitarist Dave Kerzner . New World is for me a masterpiece and vary heavily Floyd influenced . The 2 In Continuum albums that he was involved in are also a treasure for Floyd fans. For a more Genesis symphonic approach you can't go far wrong with The Watch.

I didn't say that Fragile was a safe bet. I said I thought it would be a safe bet given that he liked the other one, and obviously with that I'm aknowledging that he already said the didn't like it so much. And, regardless the length of the songs, yes, I do think the music is similar, for me they sound perfect together, more so between those two than any of them with any album from other line-ups. Much closer in sound than Relayer, despite the fact that it has the same structure, the aproach is notably different. |
