Anyone know if this site has a Discord? If not? Can anyone send me an invite to a cool Discord? Thank you.

Yes. I've heard about the "Discord" thing a lot, but have no other knowledge about it. Some reactions here are very... unpleasant. The OP didn't deserve this.

Most of them are light-hearted. Maybe he made a mistake assuming us old proggers would know what Discord was.

Yes, but the word discord is capitalized here, so it should be easy to guess that it may not mean what the word says, but a proper noun. Better to ask or do a Google search before, I'd say. Some reactions that I "meant" are not discourteous and all, but rather disheartening and unpleasant.

Discord is awesome but I don't see PA officially adopting it anytime soon. However, nothing prevents you from opening an unofficial server for the PA community and drop invites here. Smile

The old farts on this site can’t even handle FB, so Discord is certainly a step too far.
I say that with tongue firmly in cheek, of course, because as much as I find FB invaluable, it is the only social media platform I’ve ever used (since MySpace). I suspect at s9me stage, though, I may end up looking to Discord as so many FB groups and pages are putting more of their content there. I’ve never actually looked at the app, but the fact that every screenshot I have seen is white text on a black background puts me off, as I find that far harder to read than black text on white.

It's a great and different way to communicate about music or really whatever you want, I enjoy using both Discord and Progarchives.

Hi,

With apologies for some folks thinking they were being funny, and not wanting to say anything of value to the thread!

DISCORD is used for gaming a lot, and there are good things and sad things with it, mostly with folks that are not capable of paying attention or staying tuned ... as an example, our guild was raiding a boss and some folks were playing Diablo at the same time and another was watching something else on tv.

Discord's idea is excellent, and the guy that helped put it together is one of the best code artist I have known and he was/is in the guild that I was a part of in WoW Classic (don't play it anymore).

There are some nice things that might help and be fun, but in the end, I think that folks would be even more scattered since you can do more than one thing on your computer, and if you have 2 of them (or just a laptop next to you), you can do a lot of stuff ... that in many ways was not cool as the folks in our guild playing 2 games at the same time!

Hi,

I might check these, however, in my experience including the folks doing a lot of the "radio" shows that are listed on PA, in general, the person running the show is not a "musicologist" (with a historic knowledge of the music) but just another fan, and too much of the music has a similar sound, not to mention that everything lasts 4 or 5 minutes, or what is imagined to be a listener's attention span. I can attest this is wrong for progressive listeners, as when I ran a show on the Real Audio server with 25 feeds, listeners to my show (files were online, so there was no time for folks to be there kind of thing!) were averaging over 12 to 13 minutes each time.

It will be a hot day (or cold day!) in Timbuktu when someone will play the Marilyn Monroe Memorial thing, or a complete side of the Cosmic Couriers or Popol Vuh, or Klaus Schulze ... and I even heard one of these shows listed on PA do a 5 minute part/bit from KS's Mirage ... I wanted to disconnect that guy so fast I could kill! The one thing we need the most with "progressive/prog" listeners is RESPECT for the music and the artists ... and that was an example of how short sided and screwed up that show was!

Hi,

I used to play some AD2, Can and other things while gaming on Discord and even got asked many times what that was ... so there are folks that have an ear for music, and our Guild did have a thread for music though I do not remember who put it together or who was streaming it but it was continuous.

Listening to the tube, buying a CD, or your friend has some weird stuff, is not the only way to hear some things, and they all work, however small that might be.

My main concern is that we do not shut the door on some of these things ... DISCORD is a much better solution for doing a SHOW than the streaming thing, since the streaming thing costs a lot more and some sites will not save the files or the show anyway, so what you did is history! DISCORD is the same, but you are "live" and that allows for some fun things to do. AND, are not limited to the size of a file, or how long something can be, which is a hassled in a streamlined show, when someone is only doing an hour, and he/she (I think I have only heard one woman do this in the last 5 years!) can not burn it with a 20 minute piece of 30 minute if it were KS.

The only issue I have with DISCORD is the fact that some folks login and they are stoned immaculate or drunk to the gills and then become a distraction to the whole thing and it kinda renders the music ... not as much fun, although the moderator could easily cut off that listener, and probably should for the duration of the music itself and then allow for some comments. I would hate to see someone destroy a piece while listening because of their silly comments, for example!

Hi,

Are you suggesting that many of us are not doing anything else? My office is 2 computers side by side, btw. My music machine and instruments in another room all networked. Earphones on that machine listening to the music and me writing like crazy on this machine! A laptop would be just as good, although I do not like the fidelity in almost all laptops at all ... I listen to Space Pirate Radio in a really good computer that allows me a fantastic sound (and no connection drops) and I can record it on Audacity if I feel like it!

Almost no one that I knew was just on DISCORD doing nothing else, including the many folks on a raid in WoW Classic, which I do not play anymore. One guy, one time (funny!) was changing diapers while also playing his Warlock!

You get all kinds!

You’re saying this as if you guys didn’t have pet rocks and mood rings when you were kids. Gimmicks and Fads are neat, and they’re always fun to look back on when you get older. I had Silly Bandz when I was in elementary school for example. Regardless, Discord isn’t a fad or a new concept. It’s a really well ironed out and convenient medium for live chat/voice chat. The fact that I can just open up discord and talk with a big group of big Camel or Hatfield and the North fans in real time.... well pardon me for being a little enveloped in it. I’ve also discovered a lot of great music through it, and we’ll often have listening parties which isn’t really something you can do on a forum.

As for myself, I can say that I played truant and went to arcades a lot when I was small. But, I was different in school... Well, I wasn't an obedient saint, but I wasn't playing with stupid things too... Anyway, I guess we weren't blaming the youngsters here. Believe me, they deserved it actually. FB is a good way for me to keep in touch with far-flung friends and family that I don't see in person. but Twitter?Dead  Twitter is just full of psychos (your good self excluded of course). I only use it to complain to companies.

Pet rocks and mood rings? When I was a kid, it was yoyos, wrist rockets, and BB guns. And marbles, which was probably the equivalent of spinners.

This thread uhhh really did not go the direction I expected it to go.

By the way, I have ADHD and I use fidget spinners to help with boredom or impulsive decisions based on craving stimulus.

I could make a Discord if anyone's interested. It doesn't have to be affiliated with Progarchives.com.

For those who don't realize the benefit of Discord, it's basically a bunch of channels that you can jump between seemlessly--channels are similar to forums in a way, but messaging others is much easier because the communication is live, like chat rooms.

Does that make sense? It's a nice place to bundle forums in a way.

So, I could access a forum where people talk about prog just as easily as I could access a forum where they talk about guitar.

Anyhow, I appreciate that this site exists. I do. Its UI is just a bit dated and I prefer sticking with the times--no offense to some.

Discord also has voice chat rooms--which is neat.

So, yeah. Would anyone want me to make a Discord?

I’ve said it before on another thread, but this forum is a relic of the past and so are a lot of its members. I’m one of those relics, and realistically the only reason I moved to FB is that EVERY forum I was a member of slowly moved over to FB - except this one, obviously.

I am fairly sure I will eventually move to Diacord, too, just because musicians and artists are finding their reach on FB so diminished, and they can do all they canon FB, and more, by using Diacord. Honestly, the only reason I haven’t moved yet is because I don’t like the white on black format, as I find it harder on the eye than black on white. But just as I reluctantly moved to FB from the security of the forums I used to inhabit, so I can see myself reluctantly moving to Discord.

(NB - There is no negative connotation in relic, so as per the old saying, “offence is taken, nor given”.)
