i'm wondering what prog. bands people like the best. I was thinking of making this a poll, but polls only have a few options to vote on, so i decided that it would be best to make this a topic. thanks for writing!

Gentle Giant trumps all. No musicians are that good or play that well together.

pink floyd are probably the most consistant band cos pretty much every record was a masterpiece but in terms of prog rock 1971-1974 yes was untouchable. i see good things ahead for the mars volta. tool and dream theater seem to be souring as well.

"Gentle Giant trumps all. No musicians are that good or play that well together."
In terms of clever interplay, never ending excitement (including their slow numbers) and charisma, I have to agree with my fellow progger, and also include Rush and Jethro Tull in the Number One podium - gold medal.
Silver medal to ELP, Yes, KC, Genesis w/Hackett, and VdGG. Bronze medal to almost the whole rest of them.
That is, as a performing band: no discrimination intended against other great bands who also played amazingly on stage. By the way, excellent picture, Iván - it`s already in my image archive.
Regards.

"The Best", "Most Representative" or "My Favourite"?
The first is unanswerable, as there are so many different styles within the genre of prog that it's like comparing every fruit in the shop. Which is best? Apples, Oranges, Pears, Plums...?
The second is also unanswerable, for the same reason, but you could compile lists of groups that represent the genre - but would always have to keep adding! Let's start with King Crimson, include Genesis, ELP, Hawkwind, Pink Floyd, Gong, Gentle Giant, Frank Zappa, Marillion, Camel, Banco, Jethro Tull, Amon Duul, Van Der Graaf Generator, Focus - and then wait for other posts to pelt me with additions to this pitifully short list of unique and representative bands.
The third is just very difficult - and again, a list would be preferable.
Let's just say that I would give high credits to Fish-era Marillion (and then duck the missiles...)
