There's Prog Archives, JazzMusic Archives, and MetalMusic Archives, with many people participating on multiple sites, if not all three.
Why not a Classical Music Archives?

There are several sites dedicated to classical music, but I think it is too broad a subject to do a site about in the same way. After all we are speaking of a music tradition that is more than 1000 years old.

What I sometimes miss, on the other hand, is a PA like site dedicated to art rock. But maybe there are too many opinions on what that actually means.

For me art rock is stuff by bands and individuals that is intelligent/inventive music that is not quite prog, such as Bush, Bowie, 10cc, ELO, Roxy Music (or at least while Eno was the resident knob twiddler) which probably includes several artists already here in crossover, or prog-related.
[Does my memory deceive me or was the Eclectic Prog section once labelled 'Art Rock'?]

| I agree a classical music site would have to be somewhat different from this site. For instance, there are literally thousands of recordings of the most popular works. It would be next to impossible to set up pages with the cover art for every single one, even if you don't take re-issues and compilations into account.
My thought would be to set up composer pages with a list of all their works, and from there users could rate and comment upon the various recordings. Again, I'm aware this would take an extraordinary amount of work to set it all up. There are, of course, hundreds of books that list discographies, rate recordings, and reproduce concert notes. To have it all online where everyone could contribute at one site would be a real treat.
There could also be pages for conductors, performers, and orchestras for people to comment upon. In classical music, even record labels (both existing and defunct) have devoted followings.

To be honest I think much of composers' catalogues already exist online, but not in one place... it would probably be impossible to list individual recordings tho.

Re Steve: Originally Max was going to introduce a classical site after the other three sites, but since these kind of websites are mostly a dying breed, he changed his mind.

I was going to say something similar (although I would have said Max stopped caring about his websites).
I agree it would be nice to get someone online where there can be a comprehensive comparison of all the different versions of all these various musics. I know for me, having to choose between 4 different recordings for the 'best one' is certainly an obstacle in enjoying and exploring this type of music.

Best one? What does that mean? Best audio? Best performance? Best arrangement? x an infinite number of orchestras and conductors. It's crazy I tell ya...CRAZY !

Best performance. There are plenty of reviews I've seen for classical discs that say something along the lines of 'this one is alright, but check out __________ for the paramount performance of this ____ masterpiece'.
I suppose audio plays a role as well, but I've never been too disappointed with sound on classical releases (although I only have a handful).

I have a Classical Music Archive right here on PA, although admittedly, it only features Philip Glass so far.
