The New Wave eighties may have been the lost decade for some in the history of Prog-Rock. but then along came Marillion and the birth of the Neo-Prog era, so all was not lost. Smile

Some well-known favourites of mine:-

1980: ELO & Olivia Newton John - Xanadu
1981: Rick Wakeman - 1984
1982: Roxy Music - Avalon
1983: Yes - 90125
1984: David Gilmour - About Face
1985: Annie Haslam - Still Life
1986: Emerson, Lake & Powell
1987: Mike Oldfield - Islands
1988: Pink Floyd - Delicate Sound of Thunder
1989: The Enid - Final Noise

The much-derided Xanadu album is listed as Crossover Prog here on PA, even though it doesn't resemble prog in any shape or form. Roxy Music's Avalon album doesn't sound much like prog to me either. Wink

Hi Steve. Of all the 1980's albums lists posted so far, this is the list that most closely matches my own tastes in music. I know six of these albums (Asia; Geoff Downes; ELP; Mike Rutherford; Three; & Yes) , and I'm pretty sure I'd like the other four albums in your list too. Smile

^ Roger Hodgson - In The Eye Of the Storm would have made a great Supertramp album (and practically is) . If it was then only a couple by Supertramp would better it imo.

I like Power Windows a lot but it does have an 'icy cold' feel to it. Peter Collins production work is exceptional but its not for everyone . ( I don't know those Saga albums but they are insanely talented musicians so no doubt they are very good)

^ I love most in your list, and most of that could have made mine as easily as my selections (well we have two in common anyway).

I think I was planning to go with In This Life rather than Cardiacs at first, but I have some Cardiacs loyalty. I love 80s Thinking Plague. Various of my choices are not my favourite album by the act, but it also was about representation in a much longer list covering almost 120 albums over almost 60 years and because another band had an album I wanted in that year. For the very great Dead can Dance, I would loved to go with Spleen and Ideal in my list but I wanted to mention Kate Bush.

I'm just coping and re-shaping the choices I made in a General Music Discussions topic where I asked people to start at 2023 and work your way down the years while doping one album in PA and one not in PA for every year. I did down to 1965 and then started on a second list of duos.

These were my two sets for the 1980s (I love this decade which some are dismissive of):

In PA:

1980: Art Zoyd - Génération sans futur
1981: Eskaton - 4 Visions
1982: Laurie Anderson - Big Science
1983: Art Zoyd - Les espaces inquiets
1984: Dead Can Dance - Dead Can Dance
1985: Kate Bush - Hounds of Love
1986: Camberwell Now - The Ghost Trade
1987: Swans - Children of God
1988: Geinoh Yamashirogumi - Symphonic Suite AKIRA
1989: Cardiacs - On Land and in the Sea

Not in PA:

1980: Douji Morita - Un, deux, trois
1981: Phew - Phew
1982: Yasuaki Shimizu - Kakashi
1983: Cocteau Twins - Head Over Heels
1984: Cocteau Twins - Treasure
1985: Tuxedomoon - Holy Wars
1986: Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Your Funeral ... My Trial
1987: The Lounge Lizards - No Pain for Cakes
1988: Cocteau Twins - Blue Bell Knoll
1989: The Cure - Disintegration

The astute reader might surmise from the above list that I really like Cocteau Twins (and Art Zoyd from the one before) and would be right. My lists would be rather different today even though that is not a very old topic that I pulled this from. Often I do like to try to do one per artist but harder still when it's about many decades of music.

^ Well, I love most in your lists. 😀
My 3 favorite Cocteau Twins' albums are included on your list. Nice!
Tuxedomoon - what a great band! Their first 2 albums: Half-Mute (1980) and Desire (1981) are the most prog-gy and therefore my favorite by them. They would definitely be on my "Not in PA" list, plus couple the Cure albums including Disintegration.
