I think you've just posted the best cover already.
Not much else I can do.

It's one of those insanely overplayed songs. When I grew up, almost anyone with a guitar would practice the main riff, and I can't count the number of times it has been played in a music class at school. It is a great song, but my perception of it is very much affected by the above. Apart from that, I really enjoy the Machine Head album overall.

I don't know if I can find a cover version I can stand, but the main riff reappears in the chorus of this song by the legendary Danish "so bad it's good" band Red Warszawa:

Some really good and funny ones there. I guess it's a sign of the song's greatness that you can make it instantly recognizable in different styles.

This one's not a cover but has the same name. The band also have an original track titled Freebird.

This one tops them all, try and watch all the way through or skip to around 02:40 when he puts a leather jacket on.

there are very few good Deep Purple covers, most bands that cover DP don't have keyboards and underestimate Jon Lord's input in DP's music and the bands that have a keyboardist, well the keyboardists don't do justice to Jon Lord in any way.
