Subject: Interactive Poll #0 April Fool!
Date Posted: April 01 2021 at 11:48
“The wisdom of The Fool is such that he alone is
sane” ~David Cousins
Since this will begin April Fool’s Day, I thought it
would be fun to foray into foolishness.
So bring on the funny songs. My own life has been informed since a tender
age with the Doctor Demento Show, The Firesign Theater, The Smothers Brothers, Mad
Magazine versions of songs and the like.
I love to laugh and have a feeling everyone here knows a few funny/witty/clever
songs/pieces of music, I hope you all know some that I’ve never heard. Lesser-known prog or related is OK.
Make your final selection by Friday, 9 April, and I will open up
for voting on Saturday, 10 April, so we can keep to the proposed schedule. This can, of course, shift, with everyone’s
agreement, if necessary.
Here are my choices. I am going to sandwich in Todd
Snider between 2 Cheryl Wheeler tunes, these particular ones all are done, “to
the tune(s) of,” which I always enjoy. I have brought both of these artists to the polls before, I really enjoy both of them.
Cheryl Wheeler with "Potato"
Todd Snider with "Talkin' Seattle Grunge Rock Blues" (slightly mistitled on this video)
Cheryl Wheeler with "It's The Phone"

OK, after thinking a bit about it, here's my first submission. Though it's not a novelty song, it is absolutely hilarious, and a stunning vocal performance by none other than the great Ian Gillan. I'm sure Cristi will be all over this !

Giorgio Gaber - Il corrotto
The corrupt man
Maybe never like now
Eroticism is winning
But over time you realize that sex
It is unimportant
If it's not in tune with love
It is a fleeting pleasure
But I like that one there
Oh yes
I know very well that sex
It has a certain function
And it should serve more than anything else
To procreation
Oddly about this theory
I agree with the Pope
But that one turns me on
Oh yes
My life
So sad, so passive, repetitive
I almost always have a lump in my throat
But the sight of a beautiful breast comforts me
How corrupt I am
She is a rather attractive woman
I already said it
Below, who knows what she feels below
She looks innocent and clean
And therefore she must be punished
Perhaps never like now, wherever you turn
There is a great invasion of nudes
And vulgar stories
Which contrasts with a reality
So full of anguish
But that one there, what a thigh
My life
It is full of many very boring things
I also have a bit of melancholy
But sometimes a nice ass is a good fun
How corrupt I am
I don't know who she is but it's a detail
Not a flaw
Maybe, maybe I'd say it's even better
When she speaks
She is a little too aggressive
And therefore she must be punished
I care about the human relationship
But she must be punished
I don't even know why
But she must be punished
I'm worse than a Taliban
But she must be punished, punished, punished
Punished.

Quick shot also here... this band has been in an earlier poll already, with their probably most serious song, but they are more foolish normally. Here's what was their only charts hit, Foyer des Arts - "Wissenswertes ueber Erlangen" "All you need to know about Erlangen" (medium city close to Nuremberg). English lyrics are here: https://lyricstranslate.com/en/wissenswertes-%C3%BCber-erlangen-trivia-about-erlangen.html" rel="nofollow - https://lyricstranslate.com/en/wissenswertes-%C3%BCber-erlangen-trivia-about-erlangen.html

This was initially inspired by the then-new shuffle function on CD players, in order to make each listen a novel experience by interspersing normal length songs with mini songs. It has since taken on a life of its own as its own super-song:

My nomination: Happatai - Yatta
Its Turkish -use of the language- is funny even for us Turks:
Here is one more Turkish delight (!)
I had considered this to be nomination, but I learnt that it has become too popular over time. It was not this much back then:
This is most probably out of the IP contest, but from a contest named Eurovision (Probably Americans can't watch/listen to it anyway):

First couple of songs are NSFW.
1) This was a minor hit in the States. And a #2 single in Australia I learned. Released in 1994, it's sad that this American stereotype still is around after 27 years.
Denis Leary "A**hole"
2) On a road trip with my son, we compromised on him wanting to listen to the Pirates of Caribbean soundtrack and I wanting to listen to some hard rock with pirate metal. Didn't realize it was a thing until it came up.
Alestorm "F*cked with an Anchor"
And I know i posted too many tracks last time and I apologize. I do finish with three but very short parodies.
3) I'm hit or miss with Stephen Lynch but his imitation of Billy Corgan is spot on and this is less than 1 minute.
Stephen Lynch "What if that guy from Smashing Pumpkins lost his car keys?"
4) This went viral about 12 years ago with over 8 million views. Still funny and under 2 minutes.
daveyboyz "Heavy Metal Farmer"
5) Finally, something proggy and current, and only 1 minute long.
Cathy Richardson "Covid Breath"

Great, a poll theme to my heart! Prog, generally (yes, there are some exceptions), is much too serious. I propose four pieces by two different artists.
First, from the famous Neil (from the British TV show The Young Ones - his name is Nigel Planer in real life), who issued in 1984 a "heavy concept album". Some very well known prog artists collaborated on this one: Dave Stewart, Jakko Jakszyk, Gavin Harrison... The opening track is in fact a cover of a Traffic song in Donovan style (here with an introduction: "Hello Vegetables")...
Neil - Hole in my shoe (with intro):
And the closing song from the remastered and extended album, Hurdy Gurdy Mushroom Man:
You know already King Missile (remember Detachable Penis?), and I cannot avoid presenting them again; it is often a bit talky, but not always...:
King Missile - Eating People:
And... something a bit different: King Missile - And:

I drop my "never use artists twice in these polls" rule now and play a thing that really has asked me for an opportunity to play it for you, although I had used the band (my favourite Hamburg Hip Hop band) before. That was "collaborative" though, without seeing the band members themselves, which you can now see here.
The video comes with subtitles and I thing they hit it big time with this one (always a bit foolish mind you though).
Deichkind - Richtig gutes Zeug ("Really cool stuff"; much of this is spoken like in Hamburg people really boast about cool stuff that they have bought)

I think this song enjoys the spirit of the poll.
It's an Italian classic, year 1965.
Rita Pavone: Viva la Pappa col Pomodoro /Long Life to the Tomato Soup
VIVA LA PAPPA COL POMODORO / LONG LIFE TO THE TOMATO SOUP (partial lyrics)
Chorus:
Viva la pa-pa-pappa/ Long Life to the so-so-soup Col po-po-po-po-po-po-pomodoro/ With the to-to-to-to-to-to-tomato Ah, viva la pa-pa-pappa/Long Life to the so-so-soup Che è un capo-po-po-po-polavoro/Which is a ma-ma-masterpiece Ah, viva la pa-pa-pa-pappa/ Long Life to the so-so-soup Col po-po-pomodor!/With the to-to-Tomato
La storia del passato ormai ce l'ha insegnato / The history of the past has taught us now Che un popolo affamato fa la rivoluzion / That a hungry people makes the revolution Ragion per cui affamati abbiamo combatutto / That is why we have fought hunger Perciò, buon appetito, facciamo colazion / So, good appetite, let's have breakfast
Repeat Chorus
La pancia che borbotta è causa del complotto /The rumbling belly is the cause of the conspiracy
È causa della lotta: "Abbasso il Direttor!" /It is the cause of the struggle: "Down with the director!"
La zuppa ormai l'è cotta e noi cantiamo tutti /The soup is now cooked and we all sing
Vogliamo detto fatto, la pappa al pomodor! / We mean done, the tomato soup!
Repeat Chorus
Viva la pa-pa-pappa
Col po-po-pomodor / Long Life to the to-to-Tomato so-so-Soup!

Both songs are all in all melancholy, if we consider the music, but the second brings out the humor for the contrast between music and lyrics and cold, staid singing. The first from the melodic point of view is very nice.

Actually, it's possible it could have worked, but that particular video is blocked in Canada for some reason. It seems to be the same time though, so, we'll say it's the same. Besides, its more for the silliness of it all anyway, so as long as the lyrics are the same, it's no big deal.

Here are my "first takes," on initial listen to the Page One entries:
Raff:Gillan “No Laughing In Heaven”
As expected, a hard rocker with Ian Gillan’s whiskey voice taking on the
unlikely theme of religion in such a funny way!
Perfect choice, Raff. Great organ
riff comes in after Ian’s fire and brimstone preacher impersonation. Surprise!
He’s arrested after St Peter lets him in to the Pearly Gates, summing it
all up with heaven ain’t all it’s cracked up to be, in fact, it’s actually
hell! We’re off to a great start!
Lorenzo:
Caparezza “Fuori dal tunnel” This
one has a comical sound from the start, sort of a vaudeville or circus
orchestra feel. I get a feel, a lot, of
a sort of Italian Frank Zappa, making fun of modern “culture,” which exalts
cheap thrills over more quiet living, and in a bit of a bawdy way. He’s happy being himself, let everyone else
lose their lives to endless partying and hangovering. I am quite in agreement! Giorgio Gaber “Il
corrotto” A bluesy tune, with a
(fitting, as it is another bawdy one) a horn section. Poor guy, he’s trying to be good, yet his
hormones seem to be getting the best of him.
By the end, I seems as though the hormones have prevailed.
dr wu23: John Prine “Dear Abby” The
venerable John Prine (RIP) in a live recording, this particular song I haven’t
heard. Here he writes to Dear Abby,
asking for advice, solo acoustic guitar and John’s voice alone. This poor guy is so afflicted with his life,
lol! We are what we are and we ain’t
what we ain’t! Love his pseudonyms for
each verse….And, pretty good advice there, too.
Some people never learn this, who knew that John Prine had all the
answers we need, in this tidy package of a song.
Lewian: Foyer des Arts "Wissenswertes ueber
Erlangen" This one has a kind of
circus-y feel to the music, you can tell it’s funny, even if you don’t
understand the lyrics (but thank you for providing them)….also the sarcasm in
the vocalist’s delivery lets you know you’re being told a comical tale. Wherever one is from is the best place, after
all, we have similar tales from state to state in the US, kind of putting down
the neighbouring state, which also puts down your state.
Crane: Welcome to these polls! Here we have the often hilarious They Might
Be Giants “Fingertips” The song is
making fun of sort of classic songs in a mashup of all kinds of popular culture
types of music from lounge acts to tv commercials and several things in
between. Makes me think of Firesign
Theater on speed instead of LSD, or Bonzo Dog Band with ADHD.
Icarium: Supertramp “Fools Overture” Very familiar with all three of these, so
will not vote “for,” them, which doesn’t indicate how much I appreciate the
music whatsoever! Fool’s Overture begins
with piano and then a keyboard whistle sort of sound. Background sounds of a crowd enter with
sounds of trumpets and pealing of bells follow, “we shall never surrender,” is
heard (Churchill?) and some sirens, more bells and then some keyboards start up
with a steady beat of the drums. Full
band enters with horns up front.
Vocalist comes in with soaring vocals.
Cut back to sounds of a crowd and wind blowing. Vocalist reenters with choral vocals chiming
in as the song becomes more marchlike and the wind returns to end the
piece. Marillion “Script for a Jester’s
Tear” A Marillion classic here, very
dramatic piece with Fish fronting the band.
Song of lost love, and perhaps of childhood as well, with majestic
keyboards and guitars wailing along with the vocals. In classic prog fashion, there are tempo
changes and movement with dynamics, as Fish fights with his angst, then the
song fades with him enquiring of his lost love.
Jethro Tull “Jack Frost and the Hooded Crow” Song begins with a very immediately
recognizable Tull sound. Mandolin rings
out with Ian Anderson’s questioning at Yuletide why others don’t have more
compassion for others. Keyboards
underscore his singing, with a sense of churchliness, and also interweavings of
flute and syncopated drums. A choral a
capella section enter, then full band again with Christmas bells added in. Song fades out with a sense of a processional
march.
Shadowyzard: Happatai “Yatta” Very pop-ish music, delivered in a comic
manner, the video is very absurd, to go along with the lyrics and
delivery. I don’t know what to call it,
precisely, but it is certainly funny, in a very bright and cheery sort of
way. Gencan “Kendimi Kontrol
Edemiyorum” Some bluesy electric guitar
(though it’s an acoustic in the video), actually has a Turkish sound to the
lead. Sort of a semi-rap delivery, with
more musical vocals in the chorus. Not
sure if the translation I found is correct, but seems to be saying the guy is
sort of out of control silly/crazy?
Nihat Dogan “Macoyum Ben” This
one uses more of a Turkish orchestra sound, so reminds me a bit of Bollywood
without the extreme costumes. The vocal
is very much what I remember hearing around the Middle Eastern clubs in
SF. I couldn’t find a translation into
English for this one. Very disco-y as
well, but it’s because it’s dance music.
It sure seems to be something about beautiful women, however, and I find
his facial expressions (and theirs), very funny, in a cute, conspiratorial
way. Daler Mehndi “Tunak Tunak Tun” This
begins with a vocal sort of calling, then a disco-y/Middle Eastern beat comes
in…the guys’ expressions are really cute, he seems to be kind of making fun of
dance in it, to me? They are also,
certainly fun to watch, no matter what they’re saying, which, according to a
translation I found, is quite simple, “Come and love me, listen to what the
heart says.” Rodolfo Chikilicuatre
“Baila El Chiki Chiki” This I understand
more of, since it’s in Spanish, he is definitely making fun of dancing, with
the go-go-type dancers demonstrating the various dances.
George: Denis Leary “A**hole” Now this one I do remember, he was pretty
funny as a shock comedian. Begins with
acoustic guitar and love his kind of satiric commentary. Yeah, sometimes it takes a really long time
to evolve, sadly. He was right on, with
this. One of those things that are true,
yet funny. Loved the choirboy chorus….he
got those stereotypes so right! Kinda
reminds me of someone. You, too? Alestorm “F*cked With An Anchor”
A charming little ditty (and love the bloodied keyboard!) In kind of an Irish jig mode, very rousing
and full of expletives, made me laugh! Plus, they’re actually pretty good
players, so pull it off well.
Aside:No
apologies necessary, I did indicate if pieces were very short, there could be
more.I do understand peoples’ wanting
to have enough time to listen and enjoy, however, so I thought that was a good
way to meet halfway, at least to start. You’re enthusiastic and always make great contributions to these polls,
not to mention (as she mentions it, lol) putting together those poll playlists
for us!
You know already that I enjoy a good parody, so here we
go with the final 3 short pieces.
Stephen
Lynch “What If the Guy from Smashing Pumpkins Lost His Car Keys?” Brilliant, he sounds JUST like Billy Corgan! Daveyboyz “Heavy Metal Farmer” Begins with electric guitar and drums setting
the scene, then the growling commences and the angry vocals. This is pretty funny, the poor cows,
lol! TractORR! Cathy Richardson “Covid Breath”
This is pretty brilliant also….Now which one is my favourite? Might be this one, since I’m a big Tull fan.
suitkees:Neil (Nigel Planer) “Hole In My
Shoe” LOVED The Young Ones, esp his
character. Begins with a short diatribe
from Neil, then goes into the song, which is hilarious! Followed by his parody, “Hurdy Gurdy Mushroom
Man” He does such a great mimicry of Donovan here,
kind of almost a take on “Atlantis,” in the delivery at first, then he goes
into more LSD style stream-of-consciousness lyrics with a bouncy bunch of music
and a children’s chorus. This is so very
silly and fun. King Missile “Eating
People” Begins with piano, beautifully
played, and a person going into the possible reasons for cannibalism. It becomes very light in tone, with the awful
concept being happily sung (hilarious!).
A good parody on some of the discussions of why someone is vegetarian or
vegan. Nice horn solo ¾ of the way in. Followed with another by them, “And” This one begins as a metal-type song with
“bad,” singing (all off key-ish). What I
think of as a “list” song, listing many words after “and,” as the starting
word. There is a portion of starts and
stops, then the off-key singing jumps in and out with some bing-boings, then
back into the main theme.
Lewian:
Deichkind “Richtig Gutes Zeug” This one starts with an 80’s kind of
keyboard, but spoken vocals. Yes, there
is a tendency in people to think they have the best of everything (unless they
are envious of things others have), whether it’s truly “good,” or not. Also,
the endless acquisitiveness of so many people to buy, buy, buy, have, have,
have.
JD: I think
this is the first time you’ve come to these polls? I know I’ve seen you about the site, but not
sure if it was around here, so welcome!
And welcome again, if I’m wrong. 😊
Frank Zappa “Dancing Fool” Big Zappa fan
here, so very familiar with song, making quite a bit of fun of disco
music. Will not spoil it for others, if
they are unfamiliar with how it commences.
Also was happy to hear it again on a show that played on 1 April,
perfect choice for the day and a great contribution.
Tancos:John McCutcheon “Barefoot Boy
with Boots On” I do know of John
McCutcheon, I have a singer friend who used to cover a song of his, but haven’t
heard this particular one. This one is
very fiddles-forward, a bit of a reel. A
nonsense and absurdities song, it is very amusing, with the twists and turns it
takes. The Fredösphere “Abraham Lincoln Was an Invader from Space” Begins with some “space” clinkies, then banjo
and a singer in an Appalachian style, yet monotone vocal, with the chorus being
semi-spoken and wheelie-wheelie noises for comic emphasis here and there. Various Presidents are invoked, with
announcements of how they also had odd abilities, presumably from their space
origins. Tom Smith “I Had a Shoggoth”
This one references HP Lovecraft, with the amorphous “shoggoth,” in the
title. This is also features a banjo,
but has a much more musical vocal. This
one takes the folk tradition of introducing different spooky characters, then
repeats them as one more is added each time (think “The Twelve Days of
Christmas,” or “I Know An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly). Very amusing!
Cathy Berberian “Ticket To Ride”
This is a fun take on someone who is presenting a “serious,” performance
and then it becomes something else, entirely.
A song done “in the manner of.”
Here, the singer takes on the song if it were arranged as an operatic
aria. Very fun!
Scott: No pressure to vote or anything, just glad to
see you back. Scatterbrain “Tastes Just
Like Chicken” This is a complex rocky piece of music, but
with a robotic rap sort of vocal, with some choruses which are more “musical.” Has plenty of sarcasm regarding the
homogenization of current culture with a blistering short lead just right of
center. Yeah, it does all taste like
chicken, unless you know where to look.
Good entry!

IL GALLO E' MORTO / THE COCK IS DEAD
Intro:
[The man with the guitar]
Dear friends, a very serious event has happened
(Madonna, what?)
I am sorry to have to tell you, dear friends, that unfortunately the cock is dead
(Oh, Madonna, my Lord!)
VERSE:
The cock is dead, the cock is dead
The cock is dead, the cock is dead
He will never sing
Ecocodì ecocodà anymore
He will never sing
Ecocodì ecocodà anymore
CHORUS:
[all together]
Ecoecoecoecocodì ecocodà
Ecoecoecoecocodì ecocodà
(Poor beast)
[Follows the repetition of the verse, sung by the individual singers,
and of the chorus,
sung all togetyerin different Macheronic languages:
1) French
2) English
3) Spanish
4) Russian
5) Latin
6) German
THE END
[The short, chubby man to the left of the guitarist sings, in Milanese dialect]:
I'm the one who killed the cock!
[The other three]: Was it you who killed the cock?!
He had pissed me off with his ecocodì ecocodà
He really broke my balls with the ecococdì ecocodà!
[All together:]

My first thoughts on Page Two entries and some additions to original postings:
Mike: Harry
Nilsson “The Most Beautiful World in the World”
This LP was a big hit in my youth, he was a master of songs with a bit
of sadness. This one is more
straight-ahead funny, with gargling noises and such for emphasis, vaguely
Mexican-esque in sound, as far as his affected accent. There is a pretty center section with full
orchestra, as he describes our little planet, with a bawdy little bit to the
ending. Fred Eaglesmith “White
Trash” Now here is a name I haven’t
heard in a very long time. This is a
country-esque song with fiddles etc, in a live venue (he mentions Santa Cruz,
at The Catalyst maybe, or OT Price’s Music Hall?). Anyway, he lists some pretty funny
stereo-typical items one might find around a “white trash,” couple….wonder if
he was planning on visiting a gun show, lol?
Joe Ely “Me & Billy the Kid”
Another country sort of singer, reminds me a bit of John Prine, this is
a historical foray, as you said, a different slant on a comedic song, showing
Billy the Kid as pretty inept with rollicking drums and geetars. Classic country/rock construction to the
song, with a twist. Monty Python “All Things Dull
& Ugly” A dance hall style piano
with a children’s chorus singing the song, a parody on “All Things Bright and
Beautiful” Just ‘orrid, lol! I think my favourite of yours, parodies are
kind of a thing I really love.
Cristi: “Weird
Al” Yankovic “Word Crimes” Was wondering
if Weird Al (who I love) would show up in this one at some point, and here he
is. This one, he takes on the subject of
misuse of words and grammar, to a bouncy little beat. Some of my absolutely favourite grammatical
pet peeves…Every English teacher should show this in class and require them to
memorize it, lol. *peers over her glasses,
like a disapproving librarian*
Spaciousmind: The
Bonzo Dog Band “Little Sir Echo” One of
my favourite “silly” bands and welcome to these polls! Sort of an oompah piece with mimes, ukuleles and
big and small guitars and brass included.
Totally silly and absurd, like I would expect, Monty Python-esque shenanigans
on the stage.
Lorenzo: Rita Pavone:“Viva la Pappa col Pomodoro”Sort of a cabaret absurdist song, looks like
it was on a television show.Mock drama
in the delivery and I love her shoes (which I don’t find funny, I think they’re
beautiful)!
Shadowyzard: Ajdar “Cikita Muz” Funny
guy, who somehow reminds me of Vanilla Ice, with radish bunches and bananas,
doing a kind of dance song with two women on a boat (making fun of stereotypical
playboys, perhaps?).Another
by him “Nane Sekeri”This one full of
echo-y zagarits and dumbeks with a fast beat, again on the boat with the two
girls and parsley?Wish I had
translations for these, lol.
George:Tim
Minchin “Easter Song”A lovely bit of
piano playing with lyrics about Easter, which is quite irreverent…certainly
makes you think of Easter in a different way.

Page Three initial thoughts....of course, there may be more ahead:
The Anders:Fjernsyn Fjernsyn "Nr. 1"This one has a beginning that resembles
warped kazoos (saxophone?) in a staccato rhythm and some drums. Some washy guitar flailing with feedback
enters and the kazoos are gone.It
becomes a clattering like a kitchen in a washing machine with the saxophone
sounds squealing madly and the drums have returned. This continues for some time, with the saxophones
finally coming to more clarity, yet still utterly pandemonic. In the final minute, it sort of becomes more
steadily rhythmical before the poor creature is put out of it’s misery and
there is a sort of alien ship sound and the crackling of vinyl.
dr Wu23: Randy Newman “Political Science”Another great singer/songwriter known for his
humour.This one is political commentary,
as the name would suggest. In his
unmistakable style, Randy just says it like it is, with piano and a soft big
band-style backing him.
Lorenzo: Il Gallo E’
MortoThis is from another Italian variety
show, this time, four gentlemen sing a song lamenting the death of a cock, a
double entendre type song, sung very dramatically by each, as they have their
turns. This is very similar to an old
English song, also a double entendre, about a bantam cock, who feigns death to
attract hens, also very funny, especially as the live delivery, as here, is
very full of emotive posturing by the singers.
Lewian:10CC
“I Bought A Flat Guitar Tutor”This is
very, very cleverly put together and quite funny to me.I of course know of them, but never really
got a good listen.Gotta love good music
humour!
Cristi: Nanowar of Steel “Barbie MILF Princess” They waste no time in getting into hard-hitting
rock at warp speed. Very funny video,
mocking Barbie’s plasticity and acquisitiveness and also rockstars, as hey show
up in a pink Barbie tourbus. Lots of
funny commentary in the video, this one never slows down for a second. Also, unicorns!😊 (also an observation: They also mention “Dildo Faggins..." in the
Harvard Lampoon’s sendup, “Bored of the Rings,”
Bilbo is named Dildo Bugger, lol.)

Strangely, when I linked this originally, the lyrics in the video were shown in English, now they seem to be German. I remember having seen this with both German and English lyrics. I had thought that that was two different videos, but now I believe that it's just this one and they may change it regularly. I'm not even sure whether it depends on who plays it (my web behaviour may confuse any tracker whether I want it German or not). I'm happy about any feedback what language you get, in order to understand this. (Maybe checking at some point later will give you English subtitles even if you see them in German now!?) Sorry for confusion.

John Prine - Dear Abby
Good melodic and acoustic song, Prine is a folkinsger between Dylan & Mcguinn.

Guilty synth-pop pleasure.
(Quick shot also here... this band has been in an earlier poll already, with their probably most serious song, but they are more foolish normally. @Crane
This was initially inspired by the then-new shuffle function on CD players, in order to make each listen a novel experience by interspersing normal length songs with mini songs. It has since taken on a life of its own as its own super-song.
Daring song with a very coarse singing, continuous changes of almost prog rhythm, velvety and absolutely cheap melody. Candidate for the podium.
@Icarium
Supertramp Fool's Overture, and Marillion: ok, these are absolute masterpieces, I can't nominate them for the podium because it's too high quality! ;-)

MY NOMINATION IS:
Giorgio Gaber - The corrupt Man
This is an ironic song about Italian masculinism.
I recommend you read the translation:
Giorgio Gaber - Il corrotto
The corrupt man
Maybe never like now
Eroticism is winning
But over time you realize that sex
It is unimportant
If it's not in tune with love
It is a fleeting pleasure
But I like that one there
Oh yes
I know very well that sex
It has a certain function
And it should serve more than anything else
To procreation
Oddly about this theory
I agree with the Pope
But that one turns me on
Oh yes
My life
So sad, so passive, repetitive
I almost always have a lump in my throat
But the sight of a beautiful breast comforts me
How corrupt I am
She is a rather attractive woman
I already said it
Below, who knows what she feels below
She looks innocent and clean
And therefore she must be punished
Perhaps never like now, wherever you turn
There is a great invasion of nudes
And vulgar stories
Which contrasts with a reality
So full of anguish
But that one there, what a thigh
My life
It is full of many very boring things
I also have a bit of melancholy
But sometimes a nice ass is a good fun
How corrupt I am
I don't know who she is but it's a detail
Not a flaw
Maybe, maybe I'd say it's even better
When she speaks
She is a little too aggressive
And therefore she must be punished
I care about the human relationship
But she must be punished
I don't even know why
But she must be punished
I'm worse than a Taliban
But she must be punished,
punished, punished
Punished.

I don't think so. Obviously ultimately genre labels are meaningless so if somebody does it like this fair enough by me... but it would make synth-pop a worse misnomer than prog, and that means something.

Take
Talk Talk: their first two albums they are the closest to the synth pop sound, but there are no synthesizers in their songs.
And Talk Talk was put into the synth pop genre especially for their first two albums (synth is present only, and marginally, in their third album, which already deviates from the commercial synth pop sound).
Anyway, I like many songs that belong to the synth-pop genre, with or without synthesizers.

1) Nanowar of Steel “Barbie MILF Princess..."
Fantastic piece!
Madre stagionata nel tempo!
I'd say a post-metal prog song, with a Barby as protagonist.
Contender to the podium
2) Dennis Leary "A**hole"
This is a pleasing folk-pop song, with goliardic choirs.
3) Deichkind, "Richtig gutes Zeug"
Is this synth-pop?
I'd say a very guilty synth-pop pleasure!
The video is wonderful
Contender to the podium!
PS But, Christian, I've listened to this one, now,

and it's even better!
------------- Amos Goldberg (professor of Genocide Studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem): Yes, it's genocide. It's so difficult and painful to admit it, but we can no longer avoid this conclusion.

If I am going to have to choose then will stick with the old classics. It is going to have to be Monty Python - "All Things Dull & Ugly".
Staying with oldies. Bill Connolly always put a smile on me too.

Love Billy Connolly too. Would you like him possibly as your personal choice to enter for voting, or The Bonzo Dog Band one?
I was remiss in going over the original rules for this poll, my apologies. We put up, usually, up to 3, although some go for more, each for consideration, that we bring to the polls, then each person decides after some deliberation (and potentially discussion), which 1 of their choices will go up for final vote. Those are the ones you see up in the voting area at the top.
You may vote for a "Top Three," up in there, but may wish to let us know who, what, why, contended for those spots as well....or not, depending on your inclination. Many of us don't vote for our own selection, but that is individual and not a requirement.
Sorry for my not posting more of the "rules," I hope I can be forgiven, in the midst of a time of more moving into a new house, plus had visitors for the past few weeks.

I wholeheartedly approve of listening to Pentangle. And admitting Billy Connolly into the polls.

Thanks everyone. All of your comments help to ease the pain, but I feel I'll never be able to replace him. He was the most loving and wise cat that I have ever known. I have lost other pets and loved ones in the past, but this one hurts beyond what I ever imagined.
I put this in the R.I.P. thread, but felt I should post it here too since you are all my friends.
It was old age that took him, plus being a Maine Coon, he always had respiratory problems, but in the last few weeks, he was getting worse. He always tried to put on a good demeanor anyway, but I could see it was wearing him out. The X-rays showed that his lungs were filled with fluids and his heart was enlarged, but I already knew he had a big heart. Everybody that met him loved him and many of them never liked cats and a few even got cats of their own after meeting him.
Life is unfair, it's true, but I am trying to accept that death is part of life. Spring is showing itself in all of it's glory today. I feel his essence in the air and in the buds on the trees, which if he was here, he would be watching while sitting on the patio. At this moment, I can't see getting another cat as he was the best ever. I was lucky to have him in my life.

I share your hurt... I have 4 cats and don't want to even think about the dreaded day someday in the future they are all about 8 years old.
Cat person.

You can put Taste as Chicken as P so it at least gets one vote and I can feel good about my suggestion.
