It always surprises me when people use bombastic as a positive adjective to describe prog. The dictionary defines it as “high sounding but with little meaning”. Any thoughts?

It was an 'Opinion' used by music critics whose brains were too small to see what was being presented. Then it became a label attached to a genre of music that was excelling where R&R kinda stopped.

I ignore it when it's used to describe music or musicians in the progressive genre.

Guilty as charged! I've often used words like "bombastic" and "pompous" to describe prog albums in some of my past reviews, although they were intended to be positive adjectives. Embarrassed

It always surprises me when people use bombastic as a positive adjective to describe prog. The dictionary defines it as “
bombastic
/bɒmˈbastɪk/
Learn to pronounce
adjective
high-sounding but with little meaning; inflated.
"bombastic rhetoric"”

For example: When somebody posts the same subject over and over in multiple threads.

Bombastic means overpowering. It can refer to pompous speech, writing or music.

Or it can simply mean very loud and too much for the feint of heart.

I often use the term especially in reference to metal and other extreme forms of music.

I love bombast.

I think its a fair question and actually what got ELP downgraded compared to the likes of Pink Floyd and few others , even Camel the least innovative prog band of all time. My feeling is that you have to break a few eggs to make an omelette. ELP broke the whole chicken coup. I think its a fun thing and bands that use it have a sense of 'occasion'. Those sniffy about it tend to have a problem identifying what fun is. Prog generally was fun until it went up its own bum. Critics were right about that one point except that Bombast was never the issue but complexity for the sake of it , maybe. Yep another comment on the demise of prog rock!
