Obviously only two months in, but does anyone think any of the releases so far could potentially be up there for Album of the Year?

Personally the best I've heard so far has been Glass Kites II, but not quite worthy of 5 stars.

Also have really enjoyed the concept of Steven Wilson's new work but better not say this too loudly in case I start a riot.

For me, Lifesign's "Altitude" is the one to beat at the moment.

Only bought a few so far this year

Thumbscrew - Never Is Enough
elephant9 - Arrival of the New Elders
Rabbit Rabbit Radio - Vol 4 The Animal I Am
Bisbâyé - Le Sens De La Fin / The Sense Of An Ending
Chlöe Herington - Silent Reflux

None of these leaps off the page as album of the year material but all are good albums I'm enjoying.

There’s a number of releases from this year that have grabbed my attention, some of which I feel confident I will still be liking enough at the end of the year, that they might make my end of year list. But I’ve thought that before, at this stage of the year, and been wildly wrong. Also, many of the albums that I’ve been particularly impressed by in 2021 so far aren’t in PA. (This doesn’t come as any great surprise to me, though, as very few of my favourite albums from 2020 are in PA either! 🤪)

Just posted my review for the new King Gizzard album which i'm absolutely loving. It's a follow up to last years release but I think this one tops it. Psychedelic rock firstly, with elements of prog, anatolian rock, doom/stoner metal. A really good and relatively compact listen that i'm right on the cusp of rating 5 stars, i'll have to sit on it for a little bit before it could certainly and without a shadow of a doubt reach that level for me. If you just wanna sample some songs off of it, Ataraxia, Static Electricity and K.G.L.W (the 8 minute one) are good starting places.

Nothing else has really grabbed me so far this year but it's early.

I'm not going to roast you for this either.  I've listened to it a few times now and it hasn't grabbed me yet but hopefully it just needs repeated listens and familiarity.

I've 5-starred a few previous King Gizzard albums, so the 2021 offering is definitely in my queue. As are the Transatlantic albums, although I've never really got into them previously. Also got Antony Kalugin's new one to listen to although first I'll need to get over my opinion of his earlier album being the most middling, beige, bland, inoffensive prog-by-numbers offering ever.

^ yep, everytime I see him sh*t out a new album every 2 months I have to roll my eyes when the fanboys drop incessant 5 star ratings as if it’s the greatest thing to ever touch the earth. It’s honestly so offensively bland I feel like I have to shower after listening to it. Even transatlantic who I criticize for similar reasons is probably looking over at him going “dude, tone it down a bit, jeez.”

Don't succumb to the pressures of those that may not get it. I've spun it several times now and some of it is "NMB sounding" material and some of it is "new Transatlantic". It's a big enough record that I can easily ignore the NMB sounding stuff and concentrate on Transatlantic.

So yea I like it too, but it did not hit me like The Whirlwind did on first listen. I think the problem is that there is so much stuff from Neal that it can get congested. I believe, IIRC, Portnoy mentioned on YouTube recently that NBM is working on new album, so it can be hard to differentiate all his bands.

It will be closer to July/August before I can start to think about top 2021 albums.

I've only heard 'The Future Bites'. The new Transatlantic is somewhere in my to-listen list, but I have no idea when will I go to it. Generally, I cannot say anything just two months in; However, I must admit that there are a fewer and fewer new records that I care about every year; I tend to go back to older releases; Moreover, except for the two that I already mentioned, I can't think of any interesting albums in the making, so...

^Plus, I have to say that most prog records I heard last year disappointed me, with the exception of Pendragon and The Flower Kings. I found more interesting new releases in other genres, I wonder why that is? Is prog getting tired of itself?

Posted By: dougmcauliffe
Date Posted: March 01 2021 at 10:16
Last year wasn't the best imo, 2019 was infinitely better as far as releases go for my money ^

Flower Kings and Haken rose above the rest for me, really surprised me honestly

I’m never good at that sort of thing. From what I’ve seen you post, and from the albums within your contribution to the collaborators’ list for 2020, we seem to have fairly similar taste, which is to say a quite broad and eclectic mix of music, mainly staying away from the more conventional.

I have edited my post to add Bandcamp links for every album except Steven Wilson (who hardly needs any introduction). Maybe take a listen to a random track from each? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Sorry. I know that’s probably not particularly helpful.

[EDIT] And I forgot this one. I can’t be bothered going back to my post to remove one from there in able to include this, and keep it twenty-one from ‘21 so I guess it’s twenty-one in my previous post, and one in this one. 🙄

Wow - didn't realise this would create so much discussion Big smile

2019 vs 2020 is an interesting one, it definitely depends on what subgenres of the wide world of prog grab your interest. For me 2020 is propped up by me unexpectedly finding a lot of music out of Italy worthy of 5 stars, and some really good space rock too. Anything more eclectic is perhaps a bit thin on the ground?

Loads of 2021 recommendations so thanks - might take until 2023 to listen to them all at the rate I'm going this year. Just glad I have a cheap Spotify subscription rather than having to buy hundreds of records (I know, I'm killing the industry...)

I’ve seen a lot of people suggest that 2019 was a “better” year than 2020, but I don’t know that there is much difference at all. If anything, I’m inclined to think 2021 was better - for me. And that, ultimately, is what it comes down to. Last year was a phenomenal year for music that I like. And, thanks to reviewing for TPA, I was also introduced to quite a few bands I would never have heard of, or who I’d heard of but never listened to. Several I went into not expecting to enjoy much, only to find they blew me away.

I made a list on the previous page (with Bandcamp links) for the albums I’ve particularly enjoyed so far this year, and I know it will soon be outdated. I have a few albums in my inbox I’ve simply not got around to, yet. For example, I’ve had Kurushimi’s new album sitting in my downloads folder for almost a month now. I know I will love it, because there’s not been a single Kurushimi release yet that I haven’t loved. (It’s only because I know the band, that I’ve not listened to it yet.) Honestly, 2021 is looking like it’s going to be just as good a year as the last two have been, music-wise.

https://viakurushimi.bandcamp.com/album/chaos-remains" rel="nofollow - https://viakurushimi.bandcamp.com/album/chaos-remains  )

[EDIT] I’ve given it a little more thought, and I think that actually 2020 was better than 2019 (for me), and a lot of that was due to covid. A lot of music was written in reaction to covid and lockdowns and the suchlike, and a lot of that was really, really good. A lot of music was also written because there was not much else to do for some artists. Necessity is the mother of invention, and out of great adversity comes great triumph, and all those good old clichés.

2020 saw more artists with multiple releases in one year than any other year for a very long time. That’s not necessarily a good thing, of course, hence why the constant caution of quality over quantity. But there was so much quality. 2019 was a great year, for sure. But I think 2030 might jus5 have been greater...

As far as prog goes I've only heard two new albums this year: Steve Hackett's Under A Mediterranean Sky and Steven Wilson's The Future Bites. I really enjoyed both, but I'd have to say Hackett probably is the winner for me. I love the weird experimental crossover stuff on The Future Bites, but Under A Mediterranean Sky is almost effortless in its beauty.

^Looking forward to Frost*. LTE nah. Used to listen to them but anymore they aren't interesting to me, just a bunch of notes played really fast. If you like that type of music with good compositions check out Intervals. Echolyn would be cool but I understand drummer Paul Ramsey left. He was amazing.

3 (Robert Berry) - Third Impression . Despite the ELP reference , its mostly well produced AOR ish stuff but not bad. Berry is a talented musician but would rate this 3 stars.

Steven Wilson - The Future Bites . He's not the messiah just a naughty boy. Yeah its okay but 3 stars at most for me.

Lifesigns - Altitude . Maybe not as good as their stellar debut but very solid and enjoyable all the same. 3.5-4 stars.

I usually but a lot of average stuff at the beginning of the year until recommendations start filtering through. Looking forward to the Frost* release certainly , but not sure what else is on the horizon.

I'm still trying to recover from 2020!

I honestly have not listened to a single new release yet. My burnout seems worse this year than ever before. Plus, I'm still overwhelmed by how much music from the 70s, 80s, and 90s that I missed and am still trying to get to know! Plus, life . . . if you know what I mean . . .

I do feel your pain here. Until joining PA I will openly admit my prog knowledge stopped after about 10 major albums of the 70s/80s. I'm in my late 20s and finally reaching out beyond listening to Absolute Radio and falling asleep. But there's just too much out there, and I'm too much of a nerd to be happy missing anything.

If there's one good thing that's come from Covid and working from home on my own, its meant I can listen to album after album after album with very little interruption...

I'm not usually posting in these threads as I rather expect to get hold of 2020 between 2021 and 2028... Anyway, Battlestations "Splinters Vol. I: Tremor" impressed me far more than I'd have expected and more than anything (prog) I have heard of 2019 or 2020 (although I'm not done with these years yet for sure).

Found some more in this topic:

black midi - Cavalcade
Black Country, New Road - For the first time
Meat Mallet - A Formal Horse
Hedvig Mollestad Trio - Ding Dong. You’re Dead.

I just noticed while writing this that all these four clock in at 40-42 minutes, which is a length that greatly agrees with me. I have listened to Mastodon some years ago, not so much these days, but I wanted to check out their new album. It’s 1 hour 26 minutes long and simply too long for a collection of songs which aren’t that different. I had to check if I was listening to a Deluxe Edition with various bonus songs and fluff. For albums to work with that length, I prefer concept albums which has a distinct difference between two sides. Still, I prefer albums that land between 40-50 minutes.

Tho certainly not close to the 70s, musically this year is pretty good. I expect that soon we will probably get a lot of good music from the people who spent their quaintine time learning guitar. Who knows, rock might make a big comeback in the 2020s or 2030s

I believe it was from your post I found them, so I have to check out those others too. Thanks.

A little note on one band: I think "A Holy Family" is called "The Holy Family".

I'll try and review it sometime this weekend or next week Smile I'll put it in the database of my other site Sputnikmusic as well so it can also get an audience over there... they enjoy prog quite a bit. Wink

Rachel Flowers - Bigger On The Inside Very talented Lady best known for her piano versions of ELP tracks and this is a lovely well put together album. Nice vocals and tons of melody. Certainly on the Crossover side of things but worth a listen.

I love the Krokofant album Fifth. They are a powerful jazz fusion outfit, think of Elephant 9 and you are not far off but even heavier. 4 tracks and 40 minutes , this was probably intended as a vinyl release but sounds great on CD anyway. Play this loud and the neighbours (if you have any , thankfully I don't that are close!) will be banging on the walls.
