Well, this is what happens when showering while listening to Porcupine Tree's "Voyage 34"... I'm a newbie so maybe I should shut up, but I think that some of the topics here are not going anywhere, or let's say they could be far more interesting... Said so, my mind gave birth to an idea that, if it is slightly less stupid than I think it actually is, could start some REALLY interesting discussion. Step 1) let's discuss and decide which band is most likely to write, record and release a concept album in the no to distant future (let's say, before 2006 ends); Step 2) all active and willing members of the forum can give their contribution to actually WRITE A CONCEPT ALBUM; I mean, we should write the whole story, everyone can give his input and then the ideas will be voted by the "writers" themselves; Step 3) then, the masterminds of PA (or someone who has connections...) will have to use all of their charme to convince that prog band we choose to write songs based on our concept, record them and release an album with those songs on! I know, this sounds crazy, but I think most of the guys here are not exactly ordinary...

Maybe that's my fault... I don't know anybody here, I'm trying to figure out the politics of the forum, the relationships between members and the fairplay rules; it will take some time... Apart from this, I'm not a 100% progger now as I was some year ago, I lost some contact with the scene but there are prog bands that I still love... Did I tell you that I'm a Deadhead? |

I have an idea. Let's write a concept album about the way life changes all the time. There are seasons, both good and bad. The last song on the album can even be funky and have an original title, something like "Russian Urtahk"... Oh wait... I think it has been done already...

Your enthusiasm and ambition is inspiring, Tortelinni. And perhaps you are right and a bunch of weirdo's at a progmusic site can create something valuable. I would like to describe a complete first night stand. I would like to imagin the different tunes behind the different strategies, moods and actions.

How about a concept based around the return of the prog Messiah! Who delivers the world from Hip Hop, although it should all be very metaphorical and clever, of course, and never actually refer to Hip Hop or prog rock directly.

| How about a concept album that shows the state of affairs between Bush's world and the rest of the world. I am in a very large disagreement with what Bush is doing. Personally, I would have to do my homework in order to properly state my case against what he is doing, but I feel pretty strong about it. I feel a concept album that delved deeply into the whole situation in the Middle East and Bush would shed a lot of light. It would be quite a learning experience also. |

Ayreon is doing concept albums non-stop. Anyway, for the sake of discussion, how about a journey to Iapetus, the mysterious moon of Saturn. Travellers discover that Iapetus is not a moon at all but a derelict manufactured world from a long gone alien race, that seeded this Solar system long ago. Sort of Space Oddisey revisited. Is that what The Great Nothing is about, i thought it was Neal Morse singing about his early solo carier befor founding the beard. As for the concept album i agree to get Ayreon to do it as Lucassen seems to be able to get anyone and everyone to work with him and use Tolkiens story of Tuor and the fall of Gondolin as the concept. i know its a bit obvious but its a great story that deserves it

WOW! My first serious post has a life! Thanks to all of you... Seriously, I've just seen the "Exorcism of Emily Rose" movie, and was very hit by the story... It include (obviously) a possessed girl, a priest (a true man of god), the Holy Church (never visible but always present, and powerful), a greedy male lawyer and a female lawyer whose soul and mind are torn apart by the fight between faith (or will to believe) and career opportunities... This would be a good concept, I think...

If I were to write a concept album- it would be about a girl who gets a breast-reduction but the operator is an evil man who replaces her breasts with pineapples. Yes- that's right my friends: PINEAPPLES. She then becomes the icon for a leading juice market in the Philippines but the only way she can keep up with this job is by having sex with the mysognist fruit-o-phile business man of this market. After having enough of this crap, she takes a giant cumber and decapitates both the juice-man and the evil doctor who deformed her. She then, in a fit of passion, tears out her 'implants' and runs bleeding and helpless out into the street where she almost dies but an archangel comes down to give her back the breasts that she had in the first place. They may be oversized but they're human flesh. She marries the archangel and lives happily ever after. .....I can get VERY bored sometimes!! ------------- 50 tonne angel falls to the earth... |

A good way to write a prog concept is simply to write a surrealist nonsense story (ala Lamb) and put it to lyrics that make very little sense and make the story sound a lot deeper than it really is. -------------

I don't think it is a good idea to explore real locations for this
concept album if it will be based on current history events, because it
will certainly get old fast. But we could use a ficticious place, time
and symbols. Just like the song "The Trees" from Rush, for instance,
where the message is quite clear. With that said, I would like to see a concept album loosely based on the last chapter of the animation movie "Memories" (from the famous manga artist Katsuhiro Otomo), called "Cannon Fodder", a very strange story about war, belicism and paranoia, orwellian style. ------------- Klaatu Barada Nikto! |

I have kind of an idea for an album, but I have to say, it's all very
hush-hush for the moment. I can enlighten you all though with the
track titles. The project is called Herculean and the album title is
"I Am Not Agatha Christie". Herculean I Am Not Agatha Christie 1. Geoffrey Jones 2. Death of a Salesman 3. Two Wrights Don't Make A Song 4. Trespassing 5. Equality 6. Dilly-Dallying All The Way Home 7. Defiance 8. One Wright Does Make A Wrong 9. Twisted Sister 10. Dentures and Dementia 11. Caught Short Look for it in stores in about 200 years time. Actually, I was thinking that this album would not necessarily be totally prog rock, but it would contain several genres, but with prog elements. So it would have a cheerful beginning, or perhaps, tongue-in-cheek references and then would get darker (but would still contain amusing moments). Influences would be Neil Young, VdGG, Moody Blues, Gov't Mule/Allman Brothers Band, Bob Dylan, Peter Hammill and lots of other stuff too. Far fetched I know! It's a pity I am not a great writer and I do not play any instruments. -------------
