jethro tulls return to form with some wicked guitar licks from martin barre excellent drumming by Doane perry the cheeky opener KISSING WILLIE followed by, the barnburner THE RATTLESNAKE TRAIL every song has a rock feel not overcome by synths like previous 80,s tull records the only song that doesn,t rock out is the closer STRANGE AVENUES which ian mentions the AQUALUNG album cover..Overall not a bad album, best song for me is BIG RIFF AND MANDO about barres stolen mandolin.Other great songs are HEAVY WATER and EARS OF TIN the worst song for me was ANOTHER CHRISTMAS SONG not a great follow up to the original song .
3 1/2 stars out of four a must for TULL fans
1/2 stars out of five
thanks for taking the time out of your day to read my review grant

One of those Tull albums that I didn't buy along with Wraps and Catfish...perhaps it's time to listen again.
(Actually I did own Rock island and Catfish but on cassette and I recall playing it on the way to the office in 1990 while driving my 280zx turbo/ navy silver Datsun...those were the days.....I was a young 38 the wife was 36 and the kids only 10 and 6.)

I have everything from crest of a knave up to roots and branches(not sure if I have the two after that). I like roots and branches and crest but will have to listen to the others again. I remember really not liking catfish. I think I remember thinking rock island was ok but nothing special. Probably not as weak as catfish. I'll have to revisit. RtB was surprisingly strong though imo.

I haven't listened to it in a long time. Definitely decent album, JT has made worse IMO.

The only two JT albums I rank worse than this one are Under Wraps and Catfish Rising. A very weak 2 stars for me.

But is it as good as Storm Watch?

IMHO probably their worst album.

Kissing Willie                     2 out of 10  embarrassing track and video. Atrocious.
Rattlesnake Trail                1 out of 10  could there be anything worse than Kissing Willie? Yes!
Ears Of Tin                        3 out of 10  unmemorable to the hilt
Undressed to Kill                5 out of 10  passes...just
Heavy Water                      6 out of 10  not bad
Another Christmas Song      5 out of 10  OK
The Whaler's Dues              9 out of 10  the only great track on the album
Big Riff and Mando              7 out of 10  I actually like this track
Strange Avenues                 3 out of 10  ends with a stinker

Average: 4.3 out of 10  i.e. a fail...the only album by Tull that fails IMHO

Rock Island is Stormwatch's adopted freckled step-cousin who nobody wants to hang out with...

Okay, not that bad. A real cousin.

underrated album.

The title track is very good! And some other tracks are decent.

A totally forgettable 80s album along with Catfish Rising.

Not a fan of Rock Island. Big drop off from Crest of a Knave.
