Subject: Thoughts on Coldplay's Viva La Vida album?

I was just listening to this album last night and I realized I really think it's a masterpiece. It's as colorful and well put together as Sgt. Pepper's, in places as cinematic as Rush, and all with its own empathetic flair. I also think many of its songs have strong proggy elements. 42 and Death And All Of His Friends especially strike me as crossover prog or prog pop.
Anyway I know among most hardcore music fans its pretty cool to hate on these guys regardless, but I'm wondering if anyone else here happens to like this album in particular.

I agree, although their latest one is quite interesting.

X&Y was their last album I found interesting, although I've sort of grown out of it since. It's been a while since I last heard this one and Mylo Xyloto but I remember both being kind of a slog to sit through; I haven't bothered to check out anything they've made afterwards besides whichever nonsense of them I happen to catch on the radio

Coldplay makes some solid stuff but people just like to rip on them because they're popular.

That's cool JD!
I like this album from Coldplay. I do tend to like a lot of their music despite its commercial appeal.

I agree that Viva la Vida was the last really good Coldplay album, and I tried to give the two albums after a chance, but just couldn't get to the point that I liked them much, so I lost interest in them after that. I really enjoy that one and the ones that came before though, especially A Rush of Blood to the Head which has one of the best songs ever from them "The Scientist". All of their music from Viva la Vida and before really spoke to m me instantly for some reason, but after that, I lost interest.

Yes, it's a strange album (it has a few blank tracks on the CD and is quite an eclectic mixture of styles). I can't decide if it's genius or complete garbage.

not garbage at all, not genius either.
Ghost Stories, the previous album is unlistenable, nothing there for me.

A very good album but not a masterpiece, imho.

It is a fairly good album. But in general, Coldplay is the musical equivalent of melatonin. There's a reason Chris Martin was in Shaun of the Dead, playing himself and advocating for the walking-dead relief concert "Zombaid".

In the world of modern pop CP are phenomenal. But that's saying much.

Ghost Stories isn't the previous album, it's A Head Full Of Dreams. Not surprised if it went unnoticed by folks around here. Imo easily their least good album.

It's good and as many said the last one before they went downhill, but I think their first two is when they peaked.
