Recently I've found out about a place called Kowloon Walled City, once the most crowded place on Earth and also an ungoverned "city". It was located in Hong Kong, and due to political reasons envolving China and Britain, the place was able to become the largest vertical slum that ever existed.

It was finally taken down in 1994. Do you know any similar cases of officially ungoverned places?
Of course, outside the movies

I don't know if Christiania in Copenhagen still exists, but it was sort of like that. I visited there back around 1983, interesting place. Also similar, I lived in a multi story abandoned beer distillery in San Francisco in the early 80s along with close to 100 other people. It was called The Vats, it is part of urban folklore now.

Some interesting suggestion and places. Don't know what's "cooler", the place itself or the fact that you lived there. Probaby the second option.
