Topic: Worst prog band namePosted By: A Crimson Mellotron
Subject: Worst prog band name
Date Posted: November 19 2020 at 01:55
We soon had the polls about the best band name of the 60s/70s prog outfits and we found out that Atomic Rooster is considered the best one.
But how about some really bad names that do not work that well... This time no polls, just an open discussion, and it doesn't matter from which decade the band is.

Bands with bad names in general? I could google that for a giggle, when I have some time.

I would say both really, you might enjoy the band, you might not. But we need bands with terrible names, that's the point.

The two names that immediately spring to mind are t and IT. I love the music of both, but they are near impossible to google, unless you include additional Information about what you’re looking for - which works (mostly) for albums, but anything else can be a bit of a a search for a needle in a haystack.

Yeah, names like T, 3, and so on are the worst. In close competition are prog metal bands with names like "An Abstract Illusion", i.e. tasteless combos of abstract (no pun intended) words.

...So is this worst PROG band name as the title suggests, or is it now ANY band...?

I don’t generally have such a problem with those. An Abstract Illusion sounds alright to me. I really enjoyed Baikal this year, from Asian Death Crustacean. I’ve heard a few people that have not thought much of the name, but I really like it. Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Porcupine Tree, etc. All fine with me.

This is mostly because it has been spun from the TV show Cheers, do you feel the same way about Seal and Crofts, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young or Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe?

Thanks! I never knew the Scottish singer's name was Shirley Manson, even though I have three albums of Garbage, and you're right, the band are much better than the trashy name implies. After all, they recorded the theme to a Bond movie.

Frumpy is an awful name for a band IMHO. Maybe it communicates something different in their native German, but in England it means an unattractive woman. A lot of proggers think the 1976 album by Automatic Fine Tuning is pretty good, and hopefully the music (which I've not heard) is better than the dull and uninspiring band name.
For non-prog I've always thought the band Noel Redding formed after leaving the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Fat Mattress was quite spectacularly bad. And the Naplam Death frontman Lee Dorrian was in a group called Septic Tank - I mean really!

I remember the British comedy trio the Goodies did a spoof music paper report on ELP continually splitting and reforming due to musical differences, first as Lake, Emerson and Palmer, then Palmer, Emerson and Lake, and eventually Lemerpal, Aker and Son.

The so-called Post Rock/Math Rock sub genre would have monopolized the Razzies here, no contest:
All Will be Quiet
And So I Watch You From Afar
As the Poets Affirm
Beaten By Them
Celestial Wolves
Empty Solos Echo War
From Above In the Mountain
Giraffes? Giraffes!
I Am Waiting For You Last Summer
Let Airplanes Circle Overhead
Lo There Do I See My Brother
The Sea Like Lead
Souls Vibrating in the Universe
Sweep the Leg Johnny
Tangled Thoughts of Leaving
You Already Know
These might all be mighty fine bands worthy of anyone's time but someone needs to slay that post modern conceit that opportunistic nihilism is a social construct y'all.

Yeah with Frumpy I was commenting on their name, not the quality of their music! I think Septic Tank were a bit punkish. I did hear one of their tracks and funnily enough given their name it sounded at one point as though the lead singer was taking a large and painful dump.

Van der Graaf Generator is a great name, definitely not the worst. The name fits in very well with their music. It is some device which accumulates electric charge, creating tensions up to 5 MV or more.

I do feel that bands should avoid anything connected to LOTR, it's just perpetuating the goblins and wizards view of prog that people have.
Isildur's Bane is another one. And Marillion, although I'm guessing some people don't realise that.

That was my line of reasoning too. No one's offended by the term "spaghetti western", so why would anyone be offended by the term "spaghetti prog"?
If anything, "Krautrock" is a more offensive term than "spaghetti prog", and yet no one gets their knickers in a knot over the term "Krautrock"
If "Krautrock" is now considered an acceptable term for German Prog, then why not "Frog Prog" too, for French Prog?

There is spaghetti prog. The Secret Chiefs 3 have made a career out of soundtrack sounding mixes of Middle Eastern folk music and spaghetti western sounds mixed with all kinds of other world influences.

exactly... I'm not even remotely interested in hearing one note of his music.
Any band or album with the word "Prog" is an immediate turn off. As a matter of fact, any musical style incorporated into a band or album name triggers thoughts of hot garbage.

Hmm, "we" might need time not to be offended that one...

At first, yes, but now they're generally accepted and used terms.
now please ask Paul if he uses spaghetti prog respectfully or not.
I say "not".

I agree with most names, except The Gathering. What's wrong with it?

Hehe, I like your "please"... but no I won't, because I think he was thinking of the cinema reference I mentioned and furthermore I prefer to think it was not a matter of disrespect and further furthermore I don't want to become an intermediary in your "couples disputes"...

just kidding.
But I'd lie if I said I wasn't annoyed by the use of "spaghettified Italian prog".

They started out as a proggy goth metal band. THey should've called themselves The Gathering of Ghouls os something. You know how it is. Some things just don't appeal to us for whatever reason. That's the case with this one.

Exactly! I was thinking of the cinema reference, and in that regard, the term "spaghetti prog" is no more disrespectful than spaghetti western, or indeed Krautrock. The only person who seems to be offended here is Cristi.

^ none of those terms are offensive really. Spaghetti and kraut were used to differentiate regions of the world by the comparisons to their local cuisine. Even if meant to be derogatory, Germans and Italians saw the humor in it and embraced it otherwise those terms never would have stuck around.

My pet hate is bands that name themselves after well-known prog albums or songs, I mean, there's even a prog band called Supper's Ready ffs. Unless you're a tribute band then think of your own name.
I thought Supper's Ready WERE a Genesis tribute band.
I agree with this, and the tech death band Obscura is my prime suspect. I feel doing that not only diminishes your band but it's a tacky attempt at riding coat tails. None of those bands are ever unique anyway, lol.
Also, FRUMPY is one of the worst words in the English language to describe someone or something; that word takes the f**king CAKE (good band name!).

The Samurai of Prog is really one of the worst names I can think of, and for quite some time it put me off from listening to their music, but when I did i have to admit that they are quite good at making retro-symphonic Prog.

Bands should just avoid at any cost putting 'prog' or 'progressive' in their name... at least, it would not make me listen to them.
