Subject: Top 7 ELO Albums

Zoom-ing into view from Out of the Blue comes another Top 7 albums poll From Out of Nowhere. It's Time to Face the Music with the Electric Light Orchestra and ELO 2 as we embark on a voyage of Discovery to the mythical land of Eldorado. On the Third Day, it'll be the Moment of Truth when I total up the points for the first Time to see which, if any album sets A New World Record for points received in a Top 7 PA Poll. Will anyone alter the Balance of Power by voting for ELO's one and only soundtrack album, or will I be Alone in the Universe in voting for Xanadu as my top ELO album. Only Time will tell, when Secret Messages may reveal all. Smile

I'll assign the usual system of points to your Top 7 listings:-

1st album - 12 points
2nd album - 8 points
3rd album - 6 points
4th album - 4 points
5th album - 3 points
6th album - 2 points
7th album - 1 point

Here's my ELO Top 7 to get the poll underway:-

1. Xanadu (12 points)
2. Out of the Blue (8 points)
3. Time (6 points)
4. Discovery (4 points)
5. A New World Record (3 points)

By the way, Kelly Groucutt of ELO nicknamed their Discovery album the "Disco Very" album. Smile

It's certainly their most disco-y and poppy album, but ELO were good at that.

I apologize for being a nit-picker. It was Richard Tandy.

1. Electric Light Orchestra II
2. Electric Light Orchestra (No Answer)
3. Out of the Blue
4. A New World Record
5. El Dorado
6. On the Third Day
7. Face the Music

The top two sit way above any of the others.  3 & 4 are favorites for nostalgic reasons.  5, 6, 7 are give and take for me.  The rest of their albums tend to get scrambled for me as they are too similar.

l don't think that you're going to see any more votes for Xanadu as it's not too well liked by fans. The same with the two albums that went before it.

not gonna participate with a list, at least for now,  I tried listening to some ELO today, but just could not finish listening to a whole album. I need a special mood it seems.

I somehow knew Xanadu wouldn't be in your Top 7. So far, it looks like I really am Alone in the Universe in voting for Xanadu as my number one ELO album. Tongue

I'm not sure I would consider Xanadu a proper ELO studio album. Half of it is Olivia Newton-John. Anyway, the bottom of my list would be Balance of Power.

1. The Electric Light Orchestra
2. ELO 2
3. Time
4. On The Third Day, I guess?
5. ehhhh, whatever

ELO's debut is probably my favourite album by a band I'm not generally a fan of

1. ELO II
2. ELO

sorry don't give much of a damn after that although Living Thing and Mr Blue Sky are admittedly rather wonderful moments . The original group (with Roy Wood in) was something special.

That's true. Afterall once Roy Wood left the band ELO became a singles band and they lose their proggy edge. You take Eldorado which a lot of people like here. It may be a concept album but really there's a couple of singles in it. That's all. Jeff Lynne wrote good singles. He has never been able to write good albums.

The first one sounds a bit like The Move..Roy Wood was still with them.
The second has the Roll Over Beethoven suite and some other good tracks.
They do a cover of an old Move song on New World Record called Do Ya...prolly written by Lynne for the Move.

Yes, I'm afraid so. I prefer the Xanadu phase. Smile

sorry don't give much of a damn after that although Living Thing and Mr Blue Sky are admittedly rather wonderful moments .

I don't think Roy Wood brought the progressive edge in the early ELO, especially if you hear his first few solo albums (including Wizzard)

But in essence, I agree that ELO2 and No Answer (the debut) are miles ahead their best, and until Eldorado & Face The Music, they're OK.... after that they went hits & pop (or pop & hits) - not that they weren't before.

There aren't seven ELO albums I like.

Eldorado
ELO 2
Face the Music

And call it a day. The rest I can't stand.

I noticed there's not much love for the magical kingdom of Xanadu here. I was the only one who included the album in their Top 7. Cry

1. Xanadu
2. Out of the Blue
3. Time
4. Discovery
5. A New World Record
6. Face the Music
7. Secret Messages

Really? You can't stand their debut or "On the Third Day"?

1. Time
2. The Electric Light Orchestra/No Answer
3. On the Third Day (the version including Showdown)
4. Eldorado
5. Out of the Blue
6. A New World Record
7. Discovery

Also quite good:

8. Face the Music
9. ELO 2

So weird. I know it's their proggiest but it's still a complete mess and not really very good. A typical three star album for me.

That's something we can both agree on. ELO 2 is a typical 3-star album for me too, along with ELO's first and third albums. It's only from the Discovery (or Disco Very) album onwards that I started buying ELO's albums. Smile

And I'd never listened to an album by ELP before I joined ProgArchives. Embarrassed
