Subject: Your favourite dramatic "TV" shows of last decade

By TV, I include various streaming services such as Netflix, Prime.... With my cable TV service, those streaming services have "channels". So I'm thinking of ones from 2010 to 2019. Those shows didn't need to start in that decade, but have seasons/series (seasons for say the US audience, and series, say, for the Brits) that aired in that decade.

There are so many that I loved, but it can be tough for me to really get into one. Here are some of my favourites:

- Twin Peaks (Season Three, aka the Return, 2017). What a way to return to a series 25 years later. I found this so great. Part eight "Gotta Light?" is quite the artistic statement. It has an interesting mix of surrealism, humour/the absurd, horror and more usual dramatic elements. I would love to find more shows of that kind and quality, but despite Twin Peaks being so influential, it remains quite unique.

- Fargo (2014, 2015, 2017). I loved every season of this, although the first season resonated with me the most. Hopefully the new season will be coming out later this year (delayed due to COVID-19). I loved the film, and saw it in the cinema at the time of release, but the series (three serials) has/ have been more important to me.

- Les revenants (The Returned). An otherworldly, icy and aesthetically beautiful French TV show. It was remade in the US as The Return, but I couldn't get into the remake. Mogwai did the soundtrack. What if your loved ones came back?

- Utopia. This sometimes very violent and disturbing show blew me away. The issue it raises has been one of great interest to me for most of my life. I so wanted a series three. As was pointed out to me in another topic, a US remake is coming from Prime. I'm generally not a fan of remakes and wish they would just show the original. I do, on the other hand love continuations and prequels commonly, such as Twin Peaks and how The League of Gentlemen was handled (which is not in my list because I;m not focusing on comedy or comedy-comedy per se).

- Broen/ Bron/ The Bridge. Nordic noir done so very well.

- Chernobyl. A historical drama done so well.

- In the Flesh. A very interesting and moving take on PDS (Partially Deceased Syndrome). Sadly it was not renewed for a series three and so it did not satisfactorily conclude.

- Inside No. 9. A favourite anthology series of mine which crosses genres, from tragic, to comedic, to horror... I think it's brilliant and am surprised that it doesn't get more recognition. Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith are two of my favourite people. "The 12 days of Christine" brought a tear to my eye. I wish this often comedic British show show got a much wider audience around the world.

- Black Mirror. This anthology series I find especially interesting from a philosophical standpoint. Some episodes I definitely like more than others, as is to be expected especially with an anthology show, but I appreciate all of it. My most watched episode is White Bear.

- Westworld. I wasn't a big fan of season three. Season one I adored and have watched several times.

- Äkta människor (Real Humans). It was remade as Humans. I loved this, and am interested in it from an ethical standpoint. If you liked Ex Machina, this might be worth checking out.

- Stranger Things. Great fun, comedic and quite horrific, love it. It does make me feel rather nostalgic.

- Kingdom. This is a Korean zombie historical drama. I have yet to complete season two. Loved season one. Beautiful cinematography.

- Doctor Who. I can't say that I'm a fan of the Chibnall run, but I loved what came earlier. "Heaven Sent" in particular is one of my favourite episodes of any show.

- Good Omens: Loved the book, loved the BBC radio version, and loved the BBC/Prime show.

- Ad Vitam. I found this French show to be a very interesting take on "immortality" and preferred it to, say, Altered Carbon.

- Misfits. While the first season/ series is my particular favourite, and that came out in 2009, I enjoyed all of the seasons/ series very much. It's a darkly comedic take on the superpowers idea.

- American Gods. Some wonderful fantasy drama.

- Game of Thrones. I like the first few seasons very much, but the story does drag on rather too long for me. I came to it late and hope to complete it at some time.

- The Boys. Another darkly comedic take on superpowers/ superheroes.

- Star Trek: Picard. This genuinely moved me, and while it certainly helps to know and like The Next Generation, this surpasses it for me.

- The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. I loved the film, the Dark Crystal, and to me this Netflix series was very enjoyable. It is a little too Game of Thrones for me and I do prefer the film. Still, I find it very well done.

- Peaky Blinders. I've still only watched series/season one but I enjoyed it.

- Preacher. Still only watched season one but enjoyed it.

- Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams. I am a massive Philip K. Dick head, and enjoyed this anthology series. "Crazy Diamond"(a Syd Barrett reference) with Steve Buscemi was my favourite episode, and it has a Utopia connection.

Speaking of Philip K. Dick, The Man in the High Castle is another series which I enjoyed considerably.

There's much more I really liked, but those are some that immediately sprung to mind and one that I meant to include and promptly forgot. What are some of your favourites of the drama or dramedy variety of the past decade? I wanted to largely exclude comedy per se, especially of the sitcom ilk.

And thought of later, Watchmen.

Many of the ones on your list are also on mine.....I would add 'Penny Dreadful'....perhaps  my favorite of all of them in the last few years.
Also;
 'His Dark Materials'
'NOS4A2'

I have still only watched a little Penny Dreadful, I will get down to that as I have it (better double-check) including the City of Angels on my Showtime streaming service (watched Twin Peaks through that too, plus the movie on Netflix). I'll make that a priority.

Yesterday I started watching season two of The Umbrella Academy, but while I like season one, I wasn't getting into season two. Having fallen so hard for Twin Peaks, it's been hard to get into anything else since that. I am the obsessive type.

One I forgot to mention is The Watchmen. I liked that very much and I found it very relevant for our Black Lives Matter times.

The Leftovers  https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2699128/" rel="nofollow - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2699128/  - One of my favourite TV shows of recent years. Stunning work.

Dark  https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5753856/" rel="nofollow - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5753856/  - I've just started on Season 3 of this but if you like shows like Twin Peaks, The Leftovers, Lost, Castle Rock, Les Revenants I'm sure you'll like this. It's in my top TV Shows ever along with Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones and of course The Leftovers.

^ Two I've been meaning to get down to and both of which are readily available to me on streaming services that I subscribe to. I started on Dark, but at the time I just lacked any concentration and then failed to go back to it.

Black Spot is another I started on. In French is is called Zone Blanche, so White Zone.

Love The Blacklist. James Spader can chew scenery all day long and I don't get tired of it.

And the series finale of Blindspot just happened. It was a bit over the top but I still loved it and Jaimie Alexander is pretty awesome.

Christ there are so many and most have been named.

One not mentioned.

Halt and Catch Fire. Made by AMC studios who are responsible for some great shows. This one covers the rise of the tech and computer industry via four characters who try to get a small start-up off the ground. I seriously cried through most of the final season 4 . So engaging and so much fun as well. Some truly great actors in this including Kerry Bishe , Lee Pace, Scoot McNairy and Mackenzie Davis.

No Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul fans then??! I'm just watching Season 3 of Breaking Bad and the way it never pulls it's punches is a constant and pleasant surprise. Some very bold narrative choices. Yes it's well hyped but it lives up to it imo.

A couple more that seem 'related' (about big business and the carnivorous characters that inhabit it) and made by the two US giants of Cable TV

Succession (HBO) - 2 seasons and a truly beautiful poetic end that cannot fail to satisfy.

Billions (Showtime) - A whole ton of fun once you get past the first 4 or 5 episodes. Not seen Season 6 yet as its not on in the UK although apparently it was a big let down . Shame if true.

HBO 'wins' again has to be said totally hitting the target.

A few random choices ( this could go on forever!)

Line of Duty
Killing Eve
The Night Manager
(all excellent BBC dramas)

Animal Kingdom (Ellen Barkin is great)
Kingdom (the gritty kick boxing drama with Frank Grillo just landed on Netflix, not the South Korean zombi fest which I also loved!)
Startup ( I wanted more but there is no more damn it)
The Marvelous Mrs Maisel (yes its brilliant and so funny I nearly choked watching one of the episodes!)

Finally (for now)

Narchos/Narchos Mexico (Come on , who doesn't like a good drama about illegal drugs and these are also based on fact Smile)

and if you love those then I highly recommend you watch the Dutch fact based drama about the ecstasy trade Undercover

Thanks, I started on The Chalet and The Forest, and really liked how it got going. So many things going on and so many streaming shows that I stopped. It usually takes a little while for me to get really invested in a show, and I have to train myself not to play solitaire while the TV is on.

The Break doesn't ring a bell.

Right now I am re-watching series three of Twin Peaks (aka "the Return" from 2017). Since going through all of Twin Peaks it's been really hard for me to devote myself to any other TV shows (loved it so). I love the characters and the situations, the surrealism, the humour, especially the heart, and then there's the horror aspect. So wished my wife would watch it with me, but she has her Korean novella fixation.

Partially its been an access thing (streaming services, cable, internet), but I think I found more great stuff to watch this last decade in terms of shows than any other decade of my life (not all of that being from the past decade).

Chernobyl is right up there. Made at the standard of a great film or the BBC Tinker Tailor series.

Loved Mrs America too. Not a fan of Schlafly but just had to watch Cate Blanchett's portrayal of her.

Feud, about the Bette Davis- Joan Crawford rivalry, was also terrific.

The Break is really great , I'm currently watching the second season but the first did win some awards apparently. Its a heavy intense psychological drama that keeps you guessing and with a killer twist ending to S1. Don't miss out on it!

Chernobyl - absolutely brilliant indeed. I thought the cast and especially Stellan Skarsgard were amazing. I cried a lot. It was a fitting tribute to the folks that stopped a tragedy from being so much worse.

Many of the ones mentioned above I've watched with mixed feelings. Counterpart is interesting but a very slow grow. Billions, Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul are brilliant.

Overall, I'm not a fan of the DC stuff that been put out (Chris Nolan's Batman trilogy and Wonder Woman notwithstanding). But we checked out Pennyworth and it really was one of the best DC productions I have seen lately.

Other notable shows include Brockmire, The Morning Show, The Umbrella Academy, Veep.

If you want something deeply warped and darkly funny then check out Ratched on Netflix. Its another 'origins' thing like Bates Motel but this is based on the character of Nurse Ratched that was in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. Probably my favourite thing at the moment other than The Witcher.

not a description I would use for the former (grim is the word I would use). I dumped it around episode 4 of Season 3.

Ozark is indeed great. The last 2 or 3 episodes of S3 is probably the best TV I've seen in years. The dilemma she had with her brother was genuinely heart breaking . The 'surprise' ending I loved as well. Looking forward to S4 when it eventually arrives.

I've read The Handmaid's Tale, and seen the film, but didn't manage to get through the show. I like dark, but that I found too depressing before. Margaret Atwood is a writer I highly respect, and I "enjoyed" her MaddAddam Trilogy (Oryx and Crake and follow up novels) very much. Very bleak, but also dark humour. I do hope those (or even just Oryx and Crake) get turned into a series at some time (was in the works before), although I expect that it wouldn't live up to the novels for me.

The Road, Never Let Me Go and Oryx and Crake are three of my favourite "modern" novels, and all of those get very bleak (The Road can be bleak as hell) so I might have expected The Handmaid's Tale to be well within my comfort zone. I will give The Handmaid's Tale series another go. I have it PVRd and saved and its on Crave in Canada.

Anyway, two of my favourite recent discoveries are the anime The Promised Neverland, 2019 but only recently dropped on my Netflix, and not from the last decade as in 2010's but 2020, The Third Day (with Jude Law).

The Promised Neverland (another series/season will be coming out and is set to debut in January 2021, was delayed due to COVID-19). I really loved the first season. I think it was my favourite anime series that I've seen since Death Note. It did remind me early on of Never Let Me Go and some other things but ended up being quite unique, I felt, and it kept me speculating while not taking me out of the show -- fantastic animation and moving. I watched it in Japanese with English subs. One night one of my children asked me to start on it with them, and we binged it (despite me stating that I did not have the time, and I didn't, but I did anyway). I found it engrossing.

As for The Third Day, this immediately brought to mind The Wicker Man and Apostle (and a podcast drama), but that did not take away from it at all, and is its own thing. It's ongoing. I watch it on HBO, and its first four episodes have been shown, plus a twelve-hour live event which I missed. Two more are to come. The first three episodes feel like its own "season". This show has been exciting me like very few do. Dennis Kelly, the creator/writer of one of my very favourite discoveries of the past decade, Utopia, is a creator/writer of The Third Day.

I thought that Chernobyl was the bomb, no pun intended, and Fargo was great. Like you, I liked Game of Thrones when it started out but so much by the end. And I have to give The Leftovers a nod. Great concept but a few silly things like protestors smoking cigarettes. Not sure how killing themselves with cigs accomplished their aim. Maybe vaping would have worked better.

Must admit I stopped at Season 5 or 6 (the Hotel one) and decided that was the pinnacle of it. Paulson is great in that and also Ratched.

For those that loved The Haunting of Hill House (I did), then check out The Haunting Of Bly Manor (Netflix). It's set in England . I think it's based on an old Henry James novel . Very promising first episode , lots of stuff with mirrors , gently creepy rather than out and out scary but this could be a nice slow burner hopefully.

^. Will do. The Haunting of Hill House is excellent.

The 2020s rather than the 2010s: I said I found this rather too bleak before, but last night I had a sleepless night and ended up returning to HBO’s Raised by Wolves and have very much got into it.

Wonderful days for TV/ streaming shows, even though so much had to be put on hold due to the pandemic.   Wish I had had the talent, motivation and work ethic to be a working script writer.

Hi,

I have not had a TV for almost 13 years now, and do not miss it ... but one thing I watched in its entirety was GAME OF THRONES and I ended up getting the DVD's. It was massively well directed for the most part and very sensitive to a lot of things that made us uncomfortable, but could have been said to have been very real ... and it did not shy away from that reality.

There have been comments by a couple of folks about some of the nudity, and honestly? ... if you are separating the nudity from the rest of the story, the whole thing ends up being a cartoon and very fake and a typical American TV production ... where everything is done via the peephole so you can't see anything ... it's not about seeing it all ... it's about the continuity and the beauty of the script in its entirety, and it's really hard to focus on that when one's religious ideas gets in the way. In this sense, I miss European shows a lot more where there is a lot less judgement on nudity than here.

I would like to have seen some of the others, but all in all, I'm not into Doctor Who, and a lot of the things that copied it, but I miss a few shows here and there ... the one with Helen Mirren was excellent ... and a few other things from Europe ... would like to find/see some stuff from France and Germany but don't know what to get and somehow the pictures and descriptions don't excite me. There was also, before, a very large series with Sean Bean during the time of Wellington in Spain and France, and that show was magnificent and I finally got all 16 DVD's. Loved it all, and it had outstanding acting, though this show might have been before this decade requested in this thread.

I watched a couple of things from Netflix, one being about the Medici's and it was very good also ... and in those, the nudity was probably more than it had to be, but I think that it was simply trying to be artsy and show more to help its value. A few good performances there also.

^ Some really good mentions there especially Medici The Magnificient . I loved that and also the adaption of Catherine The Great ( I assume you mean this by the 'one with Helen Mirren') *

One I can guarantee you would enjoy is The Borgias (the Fox version with Jeremy Irons) . I thought this was better than GOT but then I assume Fox just couldn't support the financial outlay any further and it was cancelled after Season 3 . Real shame.

If you happen to stumble across it then I also recommend you check out Britannia. Its a slightly bizarre but entertaining take on very early British History (Druids , Roman invasion and all that).

* EDIT re-reading your post again you may have been referring to Doctor Who , but check out Catherine The Great if you haven't. It was a mini series and incredibly well done.

Oh and also The Last Kingdom if you fancy a really engrossing Vikings based drama. Based on the books of Bernard Cornwell who was also behind Sharpe (the TV series with Sean Bean).

^ Absolute fan of Last Kingdom here, and rarely see it mentioned (or at least that's my impression), much less than, say, Vikings, that I'm almost sure I won't dig. Def. will check out your other suggestions.

Mine:

Ozark
Stranger Things
Undercover
Better Call Saul
The Last Kingdom

I'm leaving Breaking Bad out as I have the idea is a bit older and widely known and praised (I think), but is absolutely brilliant, one of the best of all time, and for me sort of did open this streaming TV-series era. Same with Downton Abbey.

The Dark Crystal - I highly enjoyed it; awesome in regards to its making, very special; though maybe not my favorite genre / type of series, wouldn't say 'favorite'.

Others worth mentioning:

Conquistadores Adventvm - A wonder about C. Columbus on the more realistic side (as I like 'em). Costume-wise and all wow.. watch caravels come to life on the mythic voyage to the unknown some 500 years ago (though the 'Santa María' in which Columbus sailed I'm reading here it was a "nau" type of vessel, a bit bigger). Also, seeing queen Isabel La Católica, beautiful Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, mounted on her horse, with half battle, half royal outfit, crown and all addressing the troops, an unseen marvel to behold. A bit heavy/downing though, I have to watch it again through.

Trust Me - About a nurse that supplants a former doctor's identity. Very enthralling, highly enjoyable, great cast/acting. I think she also is Scottish by her accent, but the plot develops in Edinburgh, to where she moves in shortly after the series begins. Watched only the first season.

Show me a Hero - About a politician who runs for mayor on a city in turmoil about a federal-mandated housing development. Also on the realistic side, reminded me of 'The Wire' one of my all-time best series along with HBO's Rome (reading here, it do has a connection: was written by David Simon working with journalist William F. Zorzi, both of whom were also in 'The Wire'). Started watching it but not sure if they took it out from the service I had. Anyway, it's only 6 episodes.

Wolfhall - Marvelous medieval ambient, costume design and music. The Thomas Cromwell's cast by Mark Rylance somehow doesn't get me that much, as well as the plot; but everything else really transports you.

^^ Saw your post there.. Thumbs Up  in fact the Olaf part reminded me of the wonderfully cast Danes from 'The Last Kingdom': [looking up...] Guthrum and Ubba

Sounds really good (don't have Amazon, if I had, I'd already be checking it out; but even then, not all movies and series arrive around here :( )

Coincidentally, and off-topic of course, I am reading Philip K. Dick's 'The Variable Man' short story (or novella as it says on Wikipedia), also about a man from the past (1913) who gets to 2100's, where the story goes, and presumably has the potential of completely altering things up. The book is a short stories compilation by PD I dusted off as have done with a couple others because of PA :)

Line Of Duty
coming back soon , certainly deserves a nod

Other British crime drama treats
Unforgotten ( a real under the radar gem)
Bloodlands (can't stress too much how good this was for writing , acting and editing. A modern classic)
Dennis (David Tennant got massive praise for this quite rightly)
The Pembrokeshire Murders (another true life case very well made starring Luke Evans from The Alienist)
The Murders at White House Farm (Stephen Graham adds some real clout to another true events story)

Thumbs Up

70% up into Episode 1, and liking it.  Big smile  Handshake

(For some reason on my Netflix it starts from Season 3, but it doesn't appear to be an issue).

Forgot an important favorite:

The Road to Calvary: About the Russian Revolution; from the point of view of two accommodated sisters.  Romantic in style, realistic; two beautiful ladies and their love stories through the war. Beautifully made, music and all; impressive interiors decoration. I learnt with it that there weren't only the reds and the whites on the conflict but also the greens; very hard subject in general and heartbreaking. A couple hard scenes. Sadly, I'm reading Netflix pulled it out last year (damn! it appears to happen to every series I like.. 'Trust Me' was cancelled, though I have to say I haven't watched season 2). There appears to be a site to watch it, if you type 'where to watch' (I tested it and it plays perfectly and smoothly from a browser, in Russian, with English subtitles :) [UPD: it appears to be paid after all.. (if affordable) after a while.. , but at least lets you check it out really well]).

My favourite dramatic tv show of the last decade must be The Americans. It ranks right up there with my 3 favorite tv shows of all time (Sopranos, Twin Peaks, Six Feet Under).

Honorable mentions go to Hannibal, Fargo and Daredevil (does a superhero show qualify as tv drama? I don't know)

Out of the ones mentioned in the op, I do enjoy Black Mirror pretty much (although it's not a show I could binge for hours)

Chernobyl was really good.

Stranger Things 1st season was great. The 2nd one was a step down and pretty derivative of the 1st. The 3rd one was horrid and I don't even think I'm going to bother watching the 4th.

Hello Everyone! I am a huge fan of anime series and I watch anime shows on tv all the time. And in recent times one of my favorite anime series is http://https://animefillerlists.net/" rel="nofollow - one piece and I watch almost all the episodes of this anime series. This anime series is one of the largest anime series. But one of the series which contain best stories.

Castlevania was my favourite. An American anime.

But I guess you asked about TV-series in general. If mini-series are counted, Millennium (2010 - Sweden/Germany/Denmark). As for the comedy shows (not that dramatic, but), Taskmaster (2015 and still on, UK).

Re Anime, my favourite anime series that I remember of this past decade (for the 2019 first series) was The Promised Neverland. All-time fave anime series is Death Note, and I like Psycho-Pass a lot. We subscribe to the anime service Funimation, but I haven’t been using it much for a long time.

We recently finished three shows (two are still running) all in the vein of what I will call "rural crime drama". All of them were pretty good. They were Ozark, Yellowstone & Justified

I've enjoyed quite a few (and plenty of those already mentioned) but the most essential to me are:

Succession
Leftovers (all great but season 2 and 3 in particular)
Watchmen
The Haunting of Bly Manor*
What We Do In the Shadows

*Did not enjoy The Haunting of Hill House enough to finish though

^ I enjoyed The Haunting of Bly Manor yet also didn’t enjoy the Haunting of Hill House enough to continue with it, despite most people that I e heard preferring Hill House. My favourite of Mike Flanagan’s was Midnight Mass despite some issues I had with it. I so love the Priest character....

^ There wasn't anything wrong with Hill House really, (I got the feeling it lacked the heart and depth of Bly Manor though) but I stop watching a lot of series that are quite good. Series that I have loved, even. Such as the series Dark, where I thought the two first seasons were excellent, but two episodes into the third went up it's own arse. To many shows seem to go on for too long after they've told us what the had to say. I haven't finished Westworld or Fargo either despite having been a fan of two (or three) seasons of each of them. Plus I don't know... over thirty more, probably decent ones that I only got a couple of episodes in... and I've also finished quite a few that aren't exactly masterpieces (Killing Eve, Ozark...). Haven't heard of Midnight Mass. Will check it out.

To my first five, I'd also like to add a "top 6-10" - or really just five more favorites:

Sharp Objects (really belongs along with the first five)
The End of the F***ing World (I simply forgot)
Mare of Easttown
Enlightened (by the same guy who made the highly entertainig mess White Lotus)
His Dark Materials (flawless so far, unlike Game of Thrones)
