This is a quiz.

Please choose the answer you think is the right answer, and write it in the message.

You can get to the answer by "ear" or for your knowledge, or you can choose at random.

It doesn't matter, it's a game.

However, write the answer you choose in the message.

Ah, I forgot, if you are sure you know the answer, please don't say: Guys, I know the answer, trust me, it's this: because the game would end immediately

We are here for fun.

Amos Goldberg (professor of Genocide Studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem): Yes, it's genocide. It's so difficult and painful to admit it, but we can no longer avoid this conclusion.

Congratulations on being possibly the first quizmaster on Prog Archives. This idea could catch on. It's a pity I haven't a clue what the answer to the question is though. Smile

I'm guessing King Crimson but I don't know for sure.

Probably Led Zeppelin. Collins was using mallets on his drums during that song.

I'll go with 21st Century Schizoid Man, but I admit I'm just taking a guess.

Yeah, this seems like the obvious answer.

But I'll guess the Beatles, because why not.

I just chose Starship Trooper because I like it but I have no idea what the quiz is?

No idea. Maybe it has been written in Armando Gallo's book, I don't remember, but I have not looked up anything yet. I pick Van der Graaf Generator since the bands are related in a way: they were both on the Charisma label.

Barbarian. Do you think Phil would have even heard Starship Trooper yet? I know it was the same year, but I suppose it could have come out earlier than when they were writing for NC.

Probably Ringo Starr......so those overrated scousers...

^ Collins had massive respect for The Beatles and Ringo so that's also my thinking. I can't imagine he cared about ELP or King Crimson for one second.

I don't know this one, but I do know they were all high AF on The Mahavishnu orchestra by the time Foxtrot/SEBTP was put into production.

I think most bands were in 1972 TBH!

I guess Helter Skelter, because the Beatles influenced loads of people. (What kind of argument is that??)
Seriously, my best guess. Although I find The Kettle a very charming proposal.

Gave the only vote to Family, just to spread votes. I didn't re-listen to it first to find out if it's even remotely similar.

My guess is The Barbarian, the speedy drumming that you find on it is quite similar on this middle section of TMB. And I guess Palmer was someone Collins would follow at that time.

Ok, when all the 15 nominations will be voted, I'll reveal the answer.

The winner will get the drums that Phill Collins played in 1971 for The Musical Box!

Most likely, and most similar texturally, I think The Barbarian (I’ll have Collins’ china )

No clue...and that's a huge list....it has been said he was a jazz influenced drummer..so maybe Colosseum, one of the Crimson tracks,...but being a Traffic fan I'll say Glad. (I did listen to Musical Box....nothing sprang to mind)

Dear friends,

I have edited the poll putting the option "Allow multiple votes", so you can choose another answer.

Please, dont choose a lot of answers but two or three answers in total and write them in the messages.

OK, I add The Kettle then in order to bring us closer to the solution. The reason is that when I read The Kettle among the options I spontaneously thought "that's a cool association, makes sense". Still believe the true answer is Helter Skelter though.

Excellent, I don't know what a scouser is but I'll add that to my collection of "the Beatles sux" vocabulary. Probably the only time I will vote for a Beatles in a poll, I also chose The Kettle.

Total guess Led Zep. I think a lot of drummers heard what gonzo was doing and thought let's have some of that!

The answer is: The Weaver's Answer by Family.

You should know that I love Family. It is a group that is often forgotten, and prog lovers should reevaluate it.

In Genesis, Phil Collins was inspired by Rob Townsend's aggressive drums for the rhythm of The Musical Box and Peter Gabriel shaped his singing on that of Roger Chapman, imitating his vibrato.

"...only caught some of this lengthy back and forth. However it seems that Swede is under the impression that Anthony Phillips was involved in the writing of "The Musical Box" and "Fountain of Salmacis". Not so. The "Box" was written at the Maltings in Farnham when I joined the band, and the only layover from previous writing was the rhythm under the keyboard solo, which I believe was influenced by "The Weaver" by Family. "Salmacis" was entirely conceived at Tony Stratton-Smiths house in Crowborough at the sessions of writing for Nursery Cryme that had started at the Maltings."

But it is written even on Wikipedia!!!

Gabriel, a big fan of  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Who" rel="nofollow - The Who  at the time, pushed for Rutherford to come up with a "ballsy, attacking" section in a similar style to their guitarist  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pete_Townshend" rel="nofollow - Pete Townshend . Gabriel incorporated themes of violence and sex into the lyrics. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nursery_Cryme#cite_note-gabdvd-25" rel="nofollow - [25]  Collins was inspired to play a rolling drum part during the middle section from hearing " https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Weavers_Answer" rel="nofollow - The Weaver's Answer " by  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Family_%28band%29" rel="nofollow - Family , and put it to the rhythm. "All of a sudden", speaking about "The Musical Box" at this point, "It's 'wahey we're off!'".
