1. Yes - Close to The Edge I'm unsure about my preference between Genesis - Supper's Ready and Jethro Tull - Thick As A Brick 1 & 2 but I think I would lean towards Jethro Tull. ------------- No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. | It's a close call between CTTE and SR, but I've gone for CTTE for being a more cohesive song rather than SR which is basically different songs stuck together. |

If anyone is not getting goose bumps in anticipation of the apocalypse section when listening to SR, then you are basically dead. Close To The Edge - nothing wrong with it and the playing is great , but there is no apocalypse section TAAB - ditto CTTE

Could not have described it better!  Supper's Ready is about as brilliant as it gets, I honestly doubt there is anything in the progressive rock genre that tops what Genesis did. -------------

I can't disagree with that but while I prefer Yes over all I think close to the edge(the song)repeats itself too much and isn't quite as interesting or exciting as Supper's Ready. Plus what's up with part in the middle where it sounds like water is dripping?

Trust me, I get it, lol. Anderson was obsessed with sound samples; the birds during the opening were his idea, water dripping is ALWAYS a Jon Anderson idea - he wanted bathroom tiles for simulated reverb on vocals on TFTO, lol. Total Mass Retain is a very under-appreciated section of prog music IMHO! Although I love CTTE and TAAB, for me is SR the winner anyway. I've heard it around 1982-83 for the first time and even after such a long time I immensely enjoy every listening to it till today. And Apocalypse in 9/8 section - it's maybe the best moment in prog music for me :-) -------------

Sorry but Scorched Earth by VDGG might be my favourite prog track and the sax is what really makes it. I get goosebumps every time. The only time when I got annoyed with the inclusion is when Tangerine Dream included it on their 90's albums. It was a case of well we've got no ideas , so over to you Mrs Sax Player , make something up and fill in the holes. It can feel a bit like that at times admittedly. |
