DIRE STRAITS consisted of brothers Mark & David Knopfler from the northeast of England alongside two BROTHERS IN ARMS from Leicester in the East Midlands. No COMMUNIQUE is needed to know that DIRE STRAITS were the SULTANS OF SWING during the 1980's where their music could be heard playing ON EVERY STREET corner. Mark Knopfler weaved his own magical spell of ALCHEMY on the electric guitar with romantic songs of LOVE OVER GOLD and cynical songs about the music business where you get "MONEY FOR NOTHING and your chicks for free." When Mark Knopfler wasn't making music with DIRE STRAITS and performing live ON THE NIGHT, he was busy MAKING MOVIES music, such as the acclaimed LOCAL HERO soundtrack. I would not mind taking Ride Across the River if it ment we were heading Down to the Waterline by sending signal throgh the Telegraph Road. Suddenly the cops found my Private Investigation while i was driving through the Tunnel of Love we thought we wer Sultans of Swing but in the end of the day we all fel to sleep from the tale from'Once Upon a Time in the West. -------------

The only word "Knopfler" rhymes with in England is "kipler" (which is also a potato), although it's actually a German word.

The following song didn't make it into the final Top 7 (or even the Top 11) - which surprised me - but it undoubtedly features the best-known Dire Straits video and it was on "heavy rotation" on MTV back in the 1980's, partly due to the opening lyrics, "I want my MTV....." Money for Nothing |

Not sure I know seven DS songs. The Love Over Gold album was a 'pleasant' listen, certainly beautifully produced. Telegraph Road is an excellent song; an epic examination of human geography I remember my A level geography teacher was a fan and used the lyrics to explain the dynamics and economic factors under pinning the the formation and decline of a large settlement...or some sh*t... Private Investigations, equally was a fine song, but overall I found this band a bit of a yawn. Money for Nothing was fun, but the rest of the Brothers in Arms album was dreary and a real chore for me to get through. I do remember getting up and singing Walk of Life on a Kareoke night, at a holiday camp, and it going down very well indeed. I was complimented on my singing, which considering that I can't actually sing, suggests to me that I am at least as good a singer as Knopfler...  ------------- Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy! |
