A good piece of work....not their 'magnum opus'.   I think most IQ fans would  say Road of Bones with the bonus disc.   Personally my favorites are Dark Matter and Frequency.

It was released as a solo Mike Holmes album instead.

Neo-prog is not that popular here, but I've seen a lot of users here enjoy IQ.

I have mixed feelings about IQ. I've seen them live a few times and they always impress, but their albums, like a lot of neo-prog just remind me of how much I prefer classic prog. I'm also not keen on the vocals; sound like a weak Gabriel. Subterannea is ok, but if I had to choose I prefer Ever and The Seventh House, although these days I would say it has the edge of Dark Matter.

I also prefer Wake and Tales from the Lush Attic.

Did somebody say IQ?ClapCoolHug

Took me a long time to get into Subterranea.  I discovered the band in the late '80s with the fantastic Menel albums.  Saw them in '89 at The Marquee the night they announced they were splitting up!  Fast forward to 1997 and I see an advert in The Independent for Subby, saying it was the best concept album since The Wall.  Was astounded to see they were back together. Got the album, but who was this "new vocalist"?  Didn't like him at all, and the album was a real struggle to listen to...

Eventually it clicked.  And eventually I learnt about Ever, and the pre-Menel albums and learned to love the "new vocalist"!

Subby is a classic.  And IQ are the most consistent band on the planet.

I own it. Just okay musically. Don't like Nicholls whiny voice.

Unfortunately I played it to death when I first got it. Was the perfect album to strap on headphones and get totally immersed in. I even got to see the last ever complete live performance of it at the Astoria when they played a very under-rehearsed The Last Human Gateway as an encore. Ended coming back home very late on a Sunday night but it was so worth it!
Nowadays it ranks low for me in their discography but generally I'm just not prepared to devote a whole evening to it. I mean it is about 2 hours long , a real monster!

The movie is available on Netflix.  I haven't seen it yet.  I did recently purchase the Mike Holmes soundtrack for the movie.

I'm with you. It is their magnum opus. It is the most varied and most intricately designed album however IQ is amazingly consistent and it's not light years ahead of the rest. Ironically The Road to Bones is one of my least favorites.

A few years ago but unfortunately it tanked. I think it got like a 5 rating on imdb. Too bad too. I think too many people thought the story line was corny not to mention too far fetched. I wish Mike would release the soundtrack he did for it at some point regardless.

Ok, I see the soundtrack has been released and is available on amazon. However, even that didn't get a very good review(yes only one review so far).

I like it, though I admit it took a while to grow on me. It has more of a film score feel to it rather being a straightforward double album of music, and I find it drags a little in places. The Narrow Margin though is one of my favourite tracks in their entire catalogue.

I didn't even realise it had been released. Just looked on IMDb and it has some really bad reviews (a few 1 stars) but I might check it out.

Subterrenea the song might have been a hit single.

I wouldn't bother.  I picked it up a few years ago in Asda for a fiver and then fell asleep watching it...

But hey, I don't like CTTE so some of you will probably love the filmLOL

On the other hand, the Imaginaerum film by Nightwish IS worth watching....

I don't know it (as I listen to "Failsafe"--the only song from the album I own). I've only just begun getting to know the Neo Prog "classics" and PA recommended favorites this year. Hope to chime in later.

I had it a long time ago but unfortunately don't currently own it. At the time I thought it was good but to be honest I don't think I gave it a fair chance. I think it's probably at least as good as Spock's Beard's "snow" if not better.

Yes, it's a decent album, but IQ have better records.

If there’s any criticism pointed at it, it’s just overlong - like Snow, like Lamb. They are fantastic albums, but can drag in places - when you have a lot of great material, the ‘lesser’ (and I don’t mean ‘padding’ as such) just feels superfluous.

Good, and reassuringly long..
Whilst on the subject of IQ. Is anybody out there willing to sell me their copy of the dark xmas special CD? I cannot source it anywhere and it is pecking my head...

Play me my song.....Here it comes again.......

^ good luck on that (sorry I'm hanging onto my copy!)

I would grab the Show Of Resistance 2 CD (limited release) for the January German gig they did, while it's available. That has a great selection of IQ tracks , easily the best for an IQ live show. I mean Gateway and Further Away played on the same gig...it's IQ heaven for me.

If you're not going to buy the whole album, Subterranea has some really good 5-6 minute long songs you could get, not too long, not too short, like the eponymous song, Sleepless Incidental, Capricorn and Breathtaker, that for me are the highlights of the album. Them and the Narrow Margin.

Yes, it's a great album! It was the one that brought IQ back on the Road to Bones.
