How many of you have noticed this: a bunch of 80s synth pop songs have this weird, usually instrumental part in the middle that can only be described at "spooky." Take On Me, for instance, that middle section. A LOT of 80s hits have that. Synchronicity II has one as well. Often a key change involved. This was pointed out to me by someone who grew up then (I'm 22).

Can anyone else identify some 80s tracks that have that spooky section?

Like 80s' crappy B-movies where we see a naked woman and that scene generally has nothing to do with the plot.

Nevertheless, I love the 80s.

It can stem from a combined influce or effect of Thriller and Ghostbusters. But can also be many got atraxted to similar experiments with synthesizers.

Ultravox 'Vienna' might have had an impact on it also.

I got another one for you! Has a synth, but not synth pop per se and 1979 (so essentially 80s music, which to me started around 1978).

The Dream Police by Cheap Trick.   Seriously, there is a creepy part where the song goes insanely out of whack in the best way possible. Check out 4:04

Joan Armatrading - I'm Lucky. For a happy love song, the entire synth vibe, including the solo, is creepy through the whole song.

The synth vibe does have a twisted contrast. I like it!

Flock of Seagulla - Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of THAT Hairstyle)  - to remind us all what a great era the Synth-Pop 1980's were. Smile
