trying this again and again.. cheers for Lorenzo for a sparkling great idea. It has been a lot of fun and a lot of neat stuff to possibly discover.
the basic rules.. the only rules.. None of the PA's crap allowed here. Pick what you want otherwise.
Vote on the 3 you like the most...
Tania Maria.. first heard the title track from this album on an NPR station many hears and several life times ago and nearly drove off the f**king road. LOVED IT and immediately order the album... been a part of my album collection ever since.

Mine has been ready for quite a few days - a song I have always loved, though I didn't listen to it for many years. Now that I'm rediscovering a lot of great music that does not fall under the prog umbrella, this is the perfect opportunity to give songs such as this one more exposure. Maybe it's not very obscure, but here it is.

Glad you didn't do the singer/songwriter thing, because I'd been so tempted to post yet another suicide one. OK then, here is something that I find just hypnotic and beautiful. Seckou Kita is a master of the kora, he has so many wonderful collaborative videos with other fabulous artists, in so many styles. Edited, accidentally posted the wrong one first, although that is also wonderful.

Keldian - The Last Frontier
I decided on mine a couple of hours ago.
Keldian is a Norwegian metal band, roughly a melodic power metal band but their sound -just like their vocals- is smooth and quality is higher than most of the other power metal bands. They are basically a duo, but include guest musicians in their albums. I have more than some favourite songs of theirs, but wanna share this particular one. Oh and, they've never released a weak album yet (at least for me).
I figure those who like AOR or generally melodic music might also like this band. Actually, they might like them more than most power metal fans, as they are a standout band.
I hope you enjoy it.
P.S. I had to put the remastered version of the song, as PA didn't show the one I intended to put. They're not too different, but I slightly like the original recording more. Here's its link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hc1S5yWC2xg" rel="nofollow - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hc1S5yWC2xg

Question for the future, if an individual artist hasn't been added to PA, but a band they were a participant in is, is that eligible as an entry....It seems like maybe, no, but some people were proto or whatever and ended up doing very different things in their careers as solo artists that may not be familiar to everyone, even though their proto-bands were.

My proposal Hattler in the first poll is the band of Kraan's bass player (and key figure) and actually carries his name. Lorenzo was fine with that. The track I proposed was clearly non-prog though; my personal opinion is, if it's clearly not prog, fine, but it shouldn't be too proggy, whatever that means.

I think you nail the answer right there... the whole point of this really is songs (or artists) that may not be familiar to others and sharing what we like... and discovering through others suggestions what we might not have heard
now up to 15 suggestions.. most of the regs have put their suggestions in..but I''ll leave it the poll open for a bit and see if any new suggestions come in before closing the window and starting the voting.

Lancaster Gate - Don't like bagpipes but on this song I assume this is a synth patch. Works.
Thunderpussy - Rocks.
Stan Ridgway - Cool song.
The video for The Black Satans song is hilarious. Jumping around like monkeys, humpin a tree, and a snowball fight? Not very demonic. Satan does not approve.

well now... have a big Mick Clappie and an 11.0 ABV salute everyone .. all great choices.
Even the Satanic sh*t.. with all teh bad ex-wife memories... still was pretty cool.
two standouts
Nickie- I absolutely LOVED that.. indeed very hypnotic and such beatiful voices.. really puts me in a happy place. Easy first place vote and i'll return the favor.. you clued me in on what I want to chose for the next poll. No no suicidal song writers but beautiful hypnotic exotic non-western musical bliss...
Doc - you are the man... loved that. Eclectic and I mean Bag Pipes.. only topped by the awesomeness when used outside of traditional Scottish music that is banjo used outside of country music.
but the 3rd.. absolutely zero f**king clue.. so that will take a new round of listening to figure out.

OK, I think I've decided.
1. Merrittville (because it gave me chills, always a good sign)
2. Lancaster Gate (who doesn't love a Scottish rave-up?)
3. Bluesilian (laid back cooooooool music)
This was definitely WAY more eclectic than last time, I really struggled over some of the others, you'll all have to guess which ones.

This was very tough. I think it all would depend on the mood I'm in. But as for today. Mickey, I loved your Tania Maria selection. Her vocals and piano would melt glass. I always love some Stan Ridgeway too, and have always loved that track. I'm a fan of Comsat Angels already, love the humor of The Black Satans and I could go on, but no one wants to read that crap. In the end, I'm in the mood for dirty, messy rock today. Here's my top three:
1. Sort Sol - Daughter of Sad. Love the mix of influences here that are put together to sound modern.
2. Thunderpussy - Velvet Noose. Perfectly dirty and messy like I said.
3. New York Stories - Dolly's Ditty. I didn't even know I was in the mood for this....Give me more.....
Marc-Almond ... the original studio recording from the album is over 10 minutes long!
I think this poll's closed now, but that is a fantastic song, one of my faves of the era.

and something that just came to me..
back in the early days of this site we did get mighty tight together in cases friendships that have spanned many years and expanded out of the internet and into real life.... and much of that was bonding through the music we liked.. be it prog or not.. but many of us got to know each other through the music we like.
I do consider that as much as who and what you vote for says a lot about yourself.. what you like in music can often say a lot about a person. In that.. in addition to the exploration of music i might like.. I find it interesting what people themselves like and suggest.

First husband made a banjo sound like a saz until he could get his hands on one of the real ones.
Banjos and hurdy-gurdys, neither one needs electricity to sound electric. I would have picked a viola if not the harp to play....I also have a bowed psaltery to compensate.

Did you know this one? To understand the humour here, you need to know about djent music. I hate that crap, and want it out of progressive metal more than anything else; it is my biggest wish regarding music. Djent guitarists generally use many-stringed electric guitars. 8-strings is quite common, for instance.
I think the video is hilarious and the harp player plays a cool tune, haha.

Ok, guys, here my first impressions:
1) Tania Maria – Bluesilian: pleasent latin-soul-popsong, very relaxed. It won't be in my top 3.
2) Stan Ridgway –
Drive, She Said very good neurotic rock song. It could aspire to enter my top 3.
3) Planxty – The Well
Below The Valley: very Irish, very folk. I like that sound but this song would need a variation. It could hardly fit in my top 3.
4) Seckou Keita –
Rewmi live : very tribal song. Interesting musical arrangements. I
would say tribal-rock / fusion. Could It enter my top 3? Hmmmmm We will see.
5) Keldian – The Last
Frontier. MELODIC METAL-POP SONG. Creative but it won't be in my top 3.
6) Comsat Angels –
Our Secrets . Very good atmosphere and very good sound, THERE IS ONLY A CHANGE, A SINGLE, OR A FINAL GROWING TO BE EXCELLENT. It could aspire to enter my top 3
7) The Black Satans –
The Satans of: oh My God... O Mama help me, cover me from the Devil... it is definitely not to my taste. I was hoping to catch a glimpse of some naked woman in the woods: it was the only way to let me stand the music, and instead only ugly men....
8) Adrian Enescu –
Highway. Synth-pop? Electronic sound. Interesting. It is not clear whether it is relaxing or neurotic. It could be fine as a movie soundtrack. Is it fit for my top 3? It's hard.
It's all for now. I go to sleep.

Great variety! Lots of new to me in this one. I only recall
hearing the Stan Ridgway and Big Head Todd tracks before. And not a bad song
among all the suggestions.
So, I listened to first twelve first and had settled on
these three: Stan Ridgway, Seckou Keita, andAdrian Enescu.
Then came the last four and two of those stood out for me:
New York Stories and Enter the Haggis.
So, now had to choose three from five.
Ridgway I know and really like, but because I have heard it
before, I knocked him out. Down to four, and went through them again. Settled
on:
Enter the Haggis: Bagpipes win out! I am a sucker for
bagpipes. (And recommended if you like to rock out to bagpipes is the “Shipping
Up to Boston/Enter Sandman” cover by Goddesses of Bagpipe with The Snake
Charmer. Video below.)
Adrian Enescu: So 80’s. Evoked soundtracks of that time.
Seckou Keita: It just put me in a good vibe. Definitely hypnotic.
I had never seen/heard a kora before.
PS: The Black Satans are hilarious. I laughed out loud. My
favorite video. I watched that over again even though they didn’t make my top
3.
So, bonus vids.

And, Beavis and Butthead would have been overloaded if I had

I wasn't sure how many here would be familiar with Big Head Todd & the Monsters. I should have picked one of their tracks that wasn't so well known I suppose as that track is a bit opposite from what they normally do, but I'll do a lesser known act next time.

We used to carry them on our buses, and we were living in the Denver area when they were big. Great band and I loved their version of that song! BUT was trying to stick to things I hadn't heard before when deciding on the runners-up. I did go with something I had heard before, but only because it always affects me the same way and I hadn't heard it in ages.

Absolutely will have to check out those goddesses, looks like so much fun! And I did find the Black Satans hilarious, too. Glad you enjoyed Seckou, as I advised others who liked him, check out his other live videos in collaboration with others, different genres and combinations. Just fascinating.

Thunder Pussy - Velvet Noose. Excellent rock song, great performance. It could aspire to enter my top 3.
Bootsy Collins - What; is the Name of this Town: sophysticated funky fusion. I appreciate it but it is not a genre I enjoy.
Enter the Haggis -Lancaster ... Interesting commercial and electric folk song near to prog... Hmmm maybe, maybe...

I usually try to vote for bands or songs I haven't heard before too, but that doesn't completely rule them out. The one I'm going to pick next is an odd one, but performed by a fairly well known band, and track that I am sure not many have heard. I'm interested to see what everyone thinks of it.
In the meantime, here is another song from Big Head Todd and the Monsters that more closely resembles their style for those that are interested.

yeah.. I should have gone with that one.. if I was interested in racking up the votes. It was the highpoint of the album. She has quite the career and discography....and I have barely scratched the surface of it myself. Perhaps if Guigo were still around the forums he could illuminate her better than I could.

I like that and if this one was more true to their style I really liked it. Very laid back and chill .. and yeah.. might have been a better choice for the poll. I vaguely remember hearing of the group..the song you picked was the only one i could have named by the group. I was a in very bad place in my life when I guess they were popular and don't remember much new music wise since I was often waking up in unknown beds and occasionally dumpsters with Billie Holiday songs still ringing in my ears but few precious memories of how i arrived there.

OK let's see...
8) Big Head Todd and the Monsters - Iconic stuff really. Maybe heard a bit too much of this kind of thing in my life already.
7) Time Machine - I understand how they get everyone in a good mood there. Maybe a bit too lyrics oriented (and the problem isn't that it's Russian)
6) Planxty - There may be days on which I'd vote for this... love much of this kind of stuff and it's well done, but today I'm not in the mood for it.
5) Tania Maria - The poll was up to a good start with this one, love the piano in particular! It's also groovy. The composition eventually doesn't quite cut the mustard (of course you can say that shouldn't matter for this kind of music - but then there's other all too cool stuff).
4) Thunderpussy - Yeah, this is how rock music should be played! Misses top 3 narrowly because the singer at the end demands a bit too much of herself.
3) Enter the Haggis - I had this on first position in the first go. It makes it almost too easy for me to like it, sharp instrumental with folk elements and original instrumentation, but the first two seem to have more hidden secrets.
2) New York Stories - Incredibly full sound for youtube, I almost sensed them playing around me. Wasn't quite sure where to rank them at first try, but after I had gone through everything once or twice and this came up again, it was a clear vote in.
1) Seckou Keita - Yes I vote for Snicolette's one again! Actually didn't think it'd be first three on first go, but there I listened too superficially also having my nose in some other stuff, and it couldn't draw me out. But when I took the time to concentrate on it, oh how it hit home!

It wasn't even a dead guy! Or a suicide! Honestly, that man just exudes happiness when he plays.
So glad that others are discovering him and enjoying the music.

Time machine - Conversation on the train ----Time machine play popular folk music that could resemble Italy's Romagna ballroom dancing. Everything has a spontaneous and amateurish sound, which in Italy I could hear at a village festival while I drink beer and eat pork chops. It amused me, for heaven's sake, but it doesn't get to the top 3.
Sort Sol - Daughter of Sad (1991) is an electric ballad, with a beautiful warm voice, which alternates atmospheric moments with hard rock passages with distorted, almost cacophonic guitars. It certainly affects the listener.
Big Head Todd and the Monsters - Boom Boom Boom is a blues classic, which I first heard sung by Bruce Springsteen. I'm not excited about this version. I like the guitar solo.
New York Stories - Dolly's Ditty is a rockblues instrumental piece, almost a jam, with a nice trumpet solo. Good music, this is not discussed. But... is it in my top 3?

Ok, here's to you my ranking.
TOP 3:
1) Thunder Pussy - Velvet Noose.
2) Stan Ridgway – Drive, She Said
3) Sort Sol - Daughter of Sad (1991)
------
4) New York Stories - Dolly's Ditty
5) Comsat Angels – Our Secrets
6) Seckou Keita – Rewmi live : very tribal song. Interesting musical arrangements. I would say tribal-rock / fusion. Could It enter my top 3? Hmmmmm We will see.
7) Enter the Haggis -Lancastar Gate
8) Adrian Enescu - Autostrada

Good to know I'm not alone. Criminally underrated and far too little known band. Dean is another Fan on PA. Certainly a top 5 band for me!
By the way, after three rather dark albums they also had some kind of pop turn for two albums or so before they went back to post punk, and different from Genesis and the like I love their more poppy stuff as well. By the way, I recently discovered that their singer, guitarist and master mind Stephen Fellows has put out a solo album on bandcamp early 2020, 25 years after the last album of the Comsats, and it is awesome!)
