Take a trip back in time for a JOURNEY TO THE CENTRE OF THE EYE with the music of Nektar! They're manna from prog heaven. You're just A TAB IN THE OCEAN away from hearing SOUNDS LIKE THIS as we REMEMBER THE FUTURE of prog together. Nektar are a DOWN TO EARTH British band based in Germany. Their music is constantly being reinvented rather than RECYCLED with the release of each new album. MAGIC IS A CHILD in the wonderful world of prog, which is as magical and mystical as THE MAN IN THE MOON. Money spent on a Nektar album is money well-spent, so you won't be like THE PRODIGAL SON of biblical proverb. The EVOLUTION of Nektar reads like A BOOK OF DAYS. Take A SPOONFUL OF TIME now and travel back nearly half a century in the TIME MACHINE for Nektar's first album. The band had no dreams of MEGALOMANIA. They simply wanted to show THE OTHER SIDE of proggy Space Rock.
I've been a big fan of Nektar ever since I first discovered them on ProgArchives in 2010/11.
Which is your favourite Nektar album? At the moment, Journey to the Centre of the Eye is my favourite Nektar album, but that may change when I've listened to all of their albums. I'll post as many of Nektar's full albums here as I can find on YouTube in the coming days ahead. As you may have heard, Nektar have a new album out this year.

Hi,
Love Nektar and miss Roye terribly ... just heard a bit on the tube in the new version, and I almost cried ... he is really missed and I think that Nektar really needed to find/look for a singer that could do a bit of Roye or close enough to his energy ...
The last album of theirs I got was the two live ones (Roundhouse and Live in NY), but if I have to choose a masterpiece, it is RECYCLED ... because it is a magnificent design even if not a bit of an assault, but the band was ready to unload and they did ... but it is hard to not like/appreciate REMEMBER THE FUTURE and A TAB IN THE OCEAN, and I have always liked their first album, though some folks think it has not aged well ... it's still nice!

Oddly I was introduced to Nektar by George Jefferson..........I was a big fan of All In the Family and The Jefferson's. Watching George dance to Show Me the Way still cracks me up.
I do enjoy Nektar with Remember the Future being my fav.

I like Nektar alot, their epic sound, their heavy rock element and highly overlooked. To me they are as effective to my ears as Rush, Kansas, Camel and Saga.
Very entertaining, theatrical and boastfull - great instrument interplay and highly gifted composing

I've given Nektar way more attention than most bands and not generally been well rewarded. I love Remember the Future and a few tracks here and there from early albums, but they've mostly disappointed me

^^ It's a pity Nektar aren't nearly as well-known in England as they are in Germany. I've never managed to find any of their albums in our record stores. To be honest though, I'd never heard of Nektar before I went online in 2010.

I have 4 of their albums on vinyl. Two of them I bought in the late 70's, both Recycled and Remember the Future. I also have Magic Is A Child and the new one Time Machine.
Tough to find in the bins u are correct, they are picked up quickly. I also know that some of the store owners keep these type of albums for their own collections....so they never make it to the sales floor.
Try online sellers, on Discogs there look to be many VG/VG+ copies of Recycled for example.

I only have two Nektar albums: "Journey to the Centre of the Eye" and "Nektar" (compilation). However, "Journey to the Centre of the Eye" is one of my all-time favourite albums, and is my favourite Psychedelic/Space Rock album. Not only is it musically great, but it has strong nostalgic value as well.

"Recycled" is my favorite Nektar album. "Remember the Future" suffers from the weak chorus "Remember the Future"; it would have been much better without it

Hi,
To me, Nektar was done after the last song in RECYCLED. It was sad, and sometimes I think it was a farewell to the whole thing, or at least the band was exhausted from its massive two tours in the USA back to back ... one of them with Golden Earring I think it was, though I can't remember it that well.
None of the material I heard after that was as great and valuable as anything before that song, and a almost all of the stuff in "Down To Earth" was already being played in concert for quite sometime.
It still remains one of my favorite bands!

I only own three Nektar albums: A Tab in the Ocean, Remember the Future, and Recycled.
I liked them in patches. There were segments that were fantastic, but equally some of the music sounded dated and, at times, bombastic, with choirs and gongs that seemed to reflect all of the prog rock cliches that detractors hold up against the genre.
I must admit that, working from home during lockdown, I have been playing these albums more often, and my appreciation and enjoyment of them has grown.
I don't own Journey to the Centre of the Eye, but the posts on here have reminded me that I need to own it, so thanks everyone!
I will be ordering it today (if I can get hold of it)

Hi,
There is one thing that you get when you listen to SOUNDS LIKE THIS ... this is a band that can also do their material live on stage, and well, too. They were not a "studio" band.
But all in all, I miss Roye as much as I do Edgar in TD ... you can't reproduce greatness and a driven desire to do work that is better than what is around you day and night. You have to appreciate that ... and their work has been excellent throughout their whole time.
Time has changed, but my appreciation for their music has not waned any, although the "new" Nektar did not sit well with me, and I know it is related to the early material that I love so much. You can't replace a "girlfriend" that you loved so well ... so to speak!

I will be ordering it today (if I can get hold of it)
I own five Nektar albums now - thanks to Amazon - and they were just a drop in the ocean at £13 for a neatly packaged 5-CD box set.

Both
live albums, BTW, (Roundhouse/NY) are exceptional and simply shows you that the band
was just as good on stage as they were on record ... there was no
difference, and they were very clean about it ... be it rehearsed or
just plain well dedicated to their work.
Rockpalast
is a nice concert, however, already you can see that Roye is not doing
well, but his effort is tremendous in it, and it was one last gasp for
the band.
I like "Sounds Like This" for
one massive reason ... that is exactly what you get in concert when you
saw Nektar ... a day in the life of a preacher ... and that preacher is
Roye ... and it is his Odyssey!

Journey to the Centre of the Eye is one of my favorite albums ever and it was the second (or third) prog album I ever listened to. Amazing album.

I love Nektar. Or more exact I love Journey to the Centre of the Eye, A Tab in the Ocean,Remember the Future and Recycled.
I found Magic is a Child so underwhelming I never investigated any further. I decided to give it another shot today/now. I know it's their first release without Roye Albrighton, and he's sorely missed. It doesn't feel or sound like Nektar, the band I enjoy so much. Still upon revisiting I now think it's a decent effort. Very radio friendly AOR-sounding, and not the music I want from them. But they hadn't lost their knack for strong melodies. I guess they deserve credit for succeeding in creating the album they wanted to make. It was a huge flop though. And it's the album from them I keep seeing in the same cheap bins year after year.

Let me know where those cheap bins are, because I've never seen any Nektar albums for sale in any store anywhere - not even at the full price. I only have a 5-CD boxset of albums by Nektar, which sadly doesn't include their debut and best album: Journey to the Centre of the Eye.

Hi,
In my old days, the heaven on this earth was Rasputin's in Berkeley which had 2 stores, one for rock music and down the street a block or two (can't even remember it now!) the other one for classical music.
It was so bad that the minute you walked in you got a headache ... where do you start? When do you stop?
I don't even know if they still exist.

I wish we still had record stores in England where you don't even know where to start looking. I bought my Nektar box set from Amazon for £12. The last time I bought any Psychedelic/Space Rock from a record store was Iron Butterfly's In-a-Gadda da-Vida and The Best of Quicksilver Messenger Service from Amoeba Records in Los Angeles, after I sent my brother there on a CD-buying trip, once he'd navigated his way past the drug-pushers and hookers hanging out on Hollywood Boulevard.

I notice you live in the UK, and unfortunately for you they are/were all in Tomorrowland.
-you've never seen any of the reissues either?

^ Nope! There's only one over-priced record store (HMV) remaining in Nottingham and I haven't bought a CD from a Nottingham record shop for at least five years. I buy virtually all of my CD's from charity shops and car boot sales these days (apart from an annual trip to Langley Mill Records in Derbyshire), where the chances of finding any Psychedelic or Progressive Rock amongst their many bargains are about as likely as Roger Waters reuniting for another album with Pink Floyd - when Pigs (on the wing) might fly!
