To be honest I've never really been that big into prog metal although I like some of it. Typically I like it in small does and have to be in the mood. Imo, the genre was maybe best when it was still relatively fresh and I think the 90's were maybe when it was at it's peak. I left off the pioneers(Crimson Glory, Fates Warning, Watchtower, Voivoid, etc and also left off the most obvious ones(who were also often pioneers in the genre(DT, QR, FW, etc.) and Opeth and Symphony X who came a bit later who are also imo a bit too popular). For option number 11 please chose any band from the 90's other than those I just mentioned(yes, I know some I mentioned are from the 80's but please don't mention them either. Lol. I wanted bands who were more or less equal in terms of popularity and influence in order to make it more fair.

I like that within the joke is a genuine question.

It's a toss up between POS and Ayreon. I'll give the latter a vote.

Not a fan of any of these bands at all.
Fate's Warning or Watch Tower are two that should be on this list IMHO!

I was a fan of POS back about 5 years ago. But ever since Kati (Sonja) left the site, not so much. She absolutely adored them. I wonder if there is some connection.

Half of those bands are not progressive metal and in fact call themselves variously: power metal, folk metal, cosmic metal, fantasy metal and goth metal.
At times this forum is a complete joke and totally disregards what the bands themselves and the real metal fans think and call the music.
If Evergey is prog metal then so is every grunge band because that is exactly what they sounded like at Subkult festival in Sweden last year.
I'm out, this is BS!

All great bands. Though, "Other" category seems to suggest more popular or obscure bands, or the lack of poll options. For me it's neither. For instance Shadow Gallery and Symphony X are in the same league. Not obscure, not as popular as Dream Theater either. Instead of Nightwish, Rhapsody etc., I would've included Symphony X, Pagan's Mind, Psychotic Waltz etc.
From the nineties, this is an obscure gem. (The Last Things - Circles and Butterflies) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9zWyu3YpAA&t=1258s" rel="nofollow - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9zWyu3YpAA&t=1258s
Also I cannot vote yet, due to being a newbie.

While I agree that half of these bands are not progressive metal, calling the forum a joke is harsh and uncalled for. The prog metal crowd is gone, there are very few left, there are no conversations on this genre, I wish there was. But then again the DT fanboys were rather annoying back in the day ![LOL LOL](smileys/smiley36.gif) (and i do like many DT albums), so some people have had it I guess.
I got no problem with Evergrey being called progressive metal. They are also classified as dark heavy metal (whatever that means, I don't know), power metal and modern metal.
But Crapsody, Nightwish and Blind Guardian are not progressive metal in my opinion. Angra and Royal Hunt are at least proggish in places, so i don't mind them being called prog-power.

Did you miss the part where I said no 80's bands? Otherwise I would have to include Dream Theater, Queensryche, Savatage, Voivoid and maybe a few others and with DT and QR in particular it wouldn't be fair. Although Ayreon may very well be the clear winner here I nonetheless feel it's a more equal balance between bands.

With regards to some of these bands not being prog metal that may very well be true. However, I included them mainly because they seem to be fairly well known and respected among prog metal fans and are listed as some kind of prog metal on this site.

"Other" – the long-defunct band Eternity X, whose concept album The Edge is a progressive metal masterpiece.
After that, the line-up split into two bands; they lost their keyboardist, and Eternity X went back to being a power metal band.

A toss up between Threshold and Shadow Gallery for me this was ... I went with Shadow Gallery because Tyranny and Carved In Stone are both excellent so is Room V and Legacy is great as well I really like Ayreon but it's a little unfair voting for an artist that uses so many guests (some from Shadow Gallery in fact) Ayreon is a combined effort not really one band but made up of various artists.

Also another one I'd like to mention is Black jester "the Divine Comedy' it is also a masterpiece worth checking out if you don't mind vocals being sung in English by an italian with a fairly strong italian accent, the vocals take a little of getting use to but it's a great great prog metal album. Black Jester have Dream theater chops with a fish Marillion artistic approach ... theatrical prog metal worth checking out, I think most prog metal and neo prog rock likers will be impressed with "The Divine Comedy' especially the musicality Black jester is capable of .

Angra by far, though I'm not the greatest fan of their last two albums. Aqua with Edu Falaschi (Saw them live in Flores, Buenos Aires) was their last great record.

Dream Theater is an 80s band like Yes is a 60s band.
The popularity cutoff is is understandable, but determining the exact level of popularity that is acceptable is arbitrary and subjective. In trying to cut off bands that are "too popular", everyone would agree that'd push DT off the poll, but Pain of Salvation and even Ayeron could be argued. Nightwish is obviously too popular, most of that came after the 90s, but I don't consider them a prog metal band. They've made a few individual prog songs, arguably Imaginareum is a whole prog album, but their 90s stuff is straight power metal.

For some bands it was more about them being a big name band(ie "too popular") and for some it was more about being around in the 80's. I disagree with Nightwish being too popular at least among prog fans on here otherwise they would have at least one vote. My reasoning is if a band is on this site it's usually for a reason even if not everything they did was full blown prog/prog metal. As you say it is arbitrary and subjective but being I'm the one who started this poll how I do things is my decision. If anyone doesn't like it they can start their own poll. It's as simple as that.

Nightwish would win in the Symphonic Metal category!
