Im writing an electric string quartet for my theory class and i would like to know what off hand rules or advice you can give me to help

wow what a task!!

I don't know really, I can suggest a listen to Robert Fripp and the League of Crafty Guitarists, or, if you are allowed to do covers, arranging something for 4 electric guitars, à la California Guitar Trio. It should sound cool...

well, by electric i mean midi violin 1, violin 2, viola, and cello
