This Folky Females poll is intended just for British Folk singers, before anyone asks me why I left out Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins and Joan Baez.
I left an empty space at the end of the poll for anyone I may have left out.

So hard to choose between Jacqui and Sandy for me, both are phenomenal singers. But I'll go for Jacqui here, just because she's so rarely mentioned.

I'm finding it hard to choose too. It's a choice between Barbara Gaskin (of Spirogyra) or Lee Menelaus (of Agincourt and Ithaca) or Marianne Segal (of Jade), or maybe even Alisha Sufit (of Magic Carpet).

The delightful Maddy Prior although I would expect Sandy Denny to win the poll. I hardly know any names on the list. I wonder if Clair Hammill might fill the missing slot although not sure if she is strictly 'folk'. She did seem very influenced by Joni Mitchell

No problem. I'll tag her onto the end of the poll.

Bobbie Watson. Amazing angelic vocals that contrast brilliantly with Roger Wootton's much harder, at times even evil sounding, vocals.

What, no Loreena McKennitt? Where is Barbu when you need him? I went with Madison Prior, but Sally Oldfield was oh so close behind

I've got nothing against North American Female Folk singers. It's just that I already used up all 25 slots in the poll with British Female Folk singers, and seeing as Loreena McKennitt is Canadian, I couldn't include her in the poll. There's no reason why you couldn't have a separate poll of North American Female Folk singers though, but there isn't room for British and North American Female Folk singers altogether in the same poll. I hope that makes sense.

Kidding, man. I understand your choice to exclude them...those British names would have not stand a chance against Joni and Loreena.

I'll have a North American Female Folk singers poll coming up just as soon as I can find 25 names to fill it with.
Who would have guessed Bobbie Watson (of Comus) would have more votes than Sandy Denny in this poll though?
Bobbie Watson picked up two votes before she was even included in the poll.

Maddy Prior, way to nasal for my liking.
Jacqui McShee and Sandy Denny...very close between these 2.
June Tabor is great also.

Tough choice but Jacqui doesn't need help, from what I seeLove Gaskin, Dyble (her albums of the 00's are excellent), Oldfield and (not present) Celia Humphries (The Trees) , but don't really care for Prior or Denny

I could substitute Celia Humphris for one of the Folk singers in the poll who hasn't yet picked up any votes. I like Trees too - I reviewed their On the Shore album very recently and gave it four stars.
I also agree with what you said about Judy Dyble's relatively recent 21st century albums.

Great choice for a poll/discussion topic! There are SO MANY great British female folk singers--including a few that you left off:
Viv McAuliffe (Ant Phillips' The Geese and the Ghost)
Nest Llwelyn (Pererin)
Gay Woods (The Woods Band, Steeleye Span)
Alison Williams and Clodagh Simonds (Mellow Candle)
Celia Humphries (Trees)
Ann Steuart (Tudor Lodge)
While I love many of the "old" singers from the classic era, I am completely under the spell of/devoted to Joanne Hogg.

I've added Celia Humphris of Trees to the poll in Position #7.

As the poll is for female 'Folk' singers then it has to be Shirley Collins who is the undisputed queen of English Folk.. followed by Norma and Lal Waterson and June Tabor.
If it had been 'Folk rock' or 'Baroque folk' then I absolutely adore Bridget St. John, Julie Dyble, Celia Humphris and lots more listed here..
What about Mandy Morton from Spriguns and Carole Pegg from Mr Fox??
The Unthanks are fantastic too.. a newer generation that perhaps deserve their own poll?

Not on the poll, but certainly someone for people who enjoy UK female folk singers would be Olivia Chaney. Her work with Offa Rex is quite enjoyable, as was her most recent solo recording.

Great poll. I have seen a few over the years but not Sandy or Shirley Collins. Maddy Pryor's Hawaitha Song on Mike Oldfield's 'Exposed' worth price of admission alone...

I won't weigh in as to who's the best, but Shelagh McDonald's Stargazer is a pretty ace UK folk album from 1971.
Mary Hopkin is another contender. Earth Song Ocean Song is a pretty great album in the baroque folk vein.
I second the addition of the singers from Mellow Candle and Mandy Morton.

Great list! So many great ones here! So glad to see Lee Menaleus on the list--I've always had quite a soft spot for her work with Agincourt. Agree that I'd love to have seen the singers from Mellow Candle (Clodagh Simonds and Alison Bools (O'donnell), but understand if they've been excluded for not being from the UK (Eire). Also, those three multi-instrumentalists from Fuchsia (Janet, Madeleine, and Vanessa) and Pogues Terry Woods' wife, Gay Woods, from Steeleye Span, The Woods Band, and Terry and Gay Woods.
What a list to choose from! One almost can't go wrong with any of them!
Sorry to be redundantI hadn't seen or remembered responding to this one before.
Also could've benefitted from including Hannah Miller or Ruth Skipper from the Moulettes. Extraordinary! And what about Katharine Blake and all of her Mediæval Bæbes co-conspirators?

I've been listening to Karine Polwart recently, she's brilliant. I also recommend Jenny Sturgeon from Scottish folk band Salt House. Her album The Living Mountain is one of my most played at the moment, as is Huam by Salt House themselves.

Not really. I've made up for it now in my recent American and Canadian polls, and it's a belated vote (20 months late) for Barbara Gaskin in this poll.

It's good to see Mandy Morton of Spriguns getting a well-deserved mention. I'm a fan of hers too.
