What's your favorite track on this double album?

I know it might be hard to choose only one song but give it your best shot. I
would have to go with Anyway. The middle section with the piano and the
heavy guitar is the most powerful part of the album in my opinion.
Incredible part.

Carpet Crawlers - the most beautiful Genesis song. I also like 32 doors and Lilywhite Lilith.

For me In the cage is the song that manages to create a perfect marriage between the music and the lyrics, how ominous and compelling!

In The Cage...especially the version on 3 Sides Live...it really helped to get me into earlier Genesis, when I was 16.

Fly on the windshield. It's one of the few genesis songs on the album, the rest being Peter gabriel's solo. And I don't like Peter Gabriel solos'.

Hey I don't know why Counting Out Time has a bad rep. It fits perfectly on
the album. I'm surprised no one else has chosen Anyway, I still think that
middle instrumental part makes the most climatic part of the album.
Nonetheless the entire album could even be considered a climax in itself.

I remember reading in a Genesis biography (could it have been the Armando Gallo book I have back in Chile?) that Banks mentioned all the music was by Genesis minus Gabriel and that Gabriel locked himself away and reappeared with the "Lamb" story and lyrics. I never have heard before Gabriel composed the complete album, that sounds completely impossible and improbable, no way he could have made such a good record all by himself (just listen to the so-so first solo ablum he made!). I'll try to find some info on this when I have time.

Greetings

Well, I'm back with information from a reputable source  . This weekend we met up with Steve Hackett in Mexico City and he was kind enough to spend some time talking to some of his local fans. I was able to ask him specifically regarding this issue and he corroborated that Pete locked himself up to write the story and lyrics and that the music was composed by all the rest. So, no, Peter Gabriel did not compose all the music and lyrics by himself. Good to have that completely clarified, no?

Kind regards

Mogens

I went with "Back In NYC" myself. I love playing on my drumset with that song! The rhythmic changes and Peter's voice are just perfect!

It's one of my favorite songs (probably top 10) of the bands first 6 albums!

In the Cage, but the original version by Peter Gavriel only.

This is a song in which the vocalist has to transmit the panic, angerm frustration, claustrophobia and sadness opf Rael being trapped in the cave and his brother leaving him.

NOBODY can transmit such a variety of strong feelings as Peter Gabriel, his semi yodeling is almost like a cry for help and a fading shout of panic, when he describes the claustrophobia  symptoms I almost feel like trapped with him.

Shut me in, lock me tight.
Lips are dry, throat is dry.
Feel like burning, stomach churning,
I'm dressed up in a white costume
Padding out leftover room.
Body stretching, feel the wretching
In the cage
Get me out of this cage!

Phil has a one tone voice, when he wants to add emotion he only shouts while Peter with a single inflection of his voice without the need of a shout transmits different messages.

This is IMO the most emotive song of all Genesis career and by far the best of The Lamb, made by and for Peter Gabriel.

"Back in N.Y.C" is my personal fav.

This song's imagery is so completely unlike the earlier, melodic, fairy-tale songs.

This song is raw, real and delivers emotionally using both lyrics and music.

Wasn't it the only song from "Lamb", and, indeed, Genesis, that Peter played on his first solo tour?

Everytime I hear that live version with Phil singing I want to shoot myself.
When he says "in this cage" and just cuts off. It's almost like the song is
completely dead.

Quote When he says "in this cage" and just cuts off. It's almost like the song is completely dead.

Yeap it's frustrating, it's anti climatic. Peter makes the suffering longer, creates suspense, expectation, paranoia, blind terror. Phil just cuts it, and it's over, he lost the mood of the song.

But I hate more when he sings The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway in Second's Out and repeats the last word

And the lamb lies down...down, down, down

Holy God how I hate that.

Iván

Fly On A Windshield (with Broadway Melody of 1974)

It's incredible how the tension is built up in the song. It's totally original, no one does it like Genesis.

Ivan said something about In The Cage that is was showcasing PG's most emotional singing. Well, for me Fly On A Windshield / Broadway Melody has PG's most subtle singing. The way he twists his voice, tells a story... superb!

Yep! I agree with this, I, too, love how Peter uses his voice on 'Fly'.

OK, this is the hardest poll ever... Last time I saw this thread, I hadn't even bought The Lamb yet. Now I've had it for a month and a half, and I'm positively crazy about it. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G.

It's a choice between:

  • Fly on a Windshield
  • In the Cage
  • Hairless Heart
  • The Chamber of 32 Doors
  • Anyway
  • The Lamia

And after some serious thinking, I choose....................The Lamia. Structurally a gem, musically a masterpiece, lyrically very vivid. In other words, just marvellous.

The Colony of Slippermen is the "best" track IMO but I'd never let myself listen to the album by a few songs or skipping.
It just isn't right with this masterpiece.
The other high-lights are:
  • The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
  • In the Cage
  • Back in NYC
  • The Chamber of 32 Doors
  • The Lamia
  • The Colony of Slippermen (as mentioned)
  • It

Oof, picking a favorite song on this album is like choosing which load bearing support to remove from a building: they're all kinda essential. I actually think of the whole thing as one multi-section song, as it follows a definite linear storyline.

Okay, okay! If you're going to hassle me about it, I guess I'll go with it. Whenever I hear it, it always gives me goosebumps, and when it ends it just makes me want to listen to the whole damn thing again.
