Symphonic metal is a subgenre of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_metal_music" rel="nofollow - - orchestral https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classical_music" rel="nofollow - - power metal are also sometimes featured.
Symphonic metal bands often feature classically trained female vocalists, giving rise to the nickname opera metal or operatic metal, and it is not uncommon for them to feature a second vocalist performing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_growl" rel="nofollow - - gothic metal . Perhaps the most typical and prominent examples of symphonic metal bands are Dutch bands https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epica_%28band%29" rel="nofollow - - Within Temptation , Finnish band https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nightwish" rel="nofollow - - Therion . All four bands place a large focus on elements prevalent in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film_score" rel="nofollow -

KC & the Sunshine Band aside, you keep finding genres and artists we have in common.
I LOOOOOVE symphonic metal!
For me, the greatest album ever in the genre is Within Temptation's Black Symphony. Nightwish, Epica, Delain... all marvelous acts!
In addition, I have a fair amount of Xandria, Sirenia, After Forever, Diabulus in Musica, Edenbridge, and Leaves Eyes in my collection. I also like Kamelot, but this is one genre where I really prefer the female fronted bands.
Here's a great one where you get two for the price of one.... Sharon Den Adel and Tarja Turunen together!

^^ Many thanks for posting that amazing video from the two goddesses of Symphonic Metal - Sharon Den Adel & Tarja Turunen. I love female-fronted Symphonic Metal bands and Within Temptation and Nightwish are two of my favourite bands in the genre. I also like all of those other bands you mentioned too.
Sorry about KC & the Sunshine Band. It was only because KC shares his initials with King Crimson that I even thought of them, otherwise I might have chosen Donna Summer to open my Disco thread instead.

I would recommend the following Albums:
The Gathering - Mandylion (Anneke van Giersbergen on vocals) (Dutch band)
I don't think The Gathering are symphonic metal like Nightwish and the rest of the bands mentioned above. Mandylion was a gothic/doom album and so was the next one Nighttime Birds.

They are less operatic than the others. But all the bands emtioned have a strong Gothic touch,
Within Temptation where even a full blown Gothic Metal band on their first Album.
I simply see The Gathering being very important for the trend of female fronted Metal bands
with Prog touches.

I agree with your last sentence. I also find once they left the metal behind, they became even more unique, they dared eperiment and they did a fine job.

One of the first to do this kind of 'extreme' cross over (other than ELP of course) was Klaus Nomi. But the more popular one was this.

Now, I just need to find the Symphonic Metal poll that goes with it.

^ & ^^
I said to myself I won't be posting in this thread or the poll, but these lists are so inaccurate, it bothers me, i don't even know why. Wherever you are copying these lists from, they're not doing a good job.
First of all, progressive metal and symphonic metal are two different genres, why put them together?!
Second, a lot of the bands mentioned there are not symphonic metal:
Allen/Lande can be considered power metal at best, it's melodic heavy metal.
Ayreon (and whatever other Arjen projects) are not symphonic metal.
The Beyond is an obscure progressive metal band, difficult to find, what's it doing here? (proof you're just copying titles, say it isn't so).
Eye for an Eye & The Edge are by a band called Twilight whose keyboardist will go on and form Beyond Twilight much later.
Blind Guardian is a power metal band, they even started as a speed metal band, same as Helloween. They have symphonic elements, but cannot be considered a symphonic metal band (like After Forever, Epica and Nightwish and the likes).
Wherever you copy these titles, find better resources, like metalmusicarchives and/or metal storm.

^ Thanks for your valued input, Cristi, as you're far more knowledgeable about Progressive Metal than I am. There'd be little point in me just copying lists from Metal Archives I compiled these lists between 2013 & 2015 entirely independently of ProgArchives & MetalArchives. To be honest, I've listed Progressive Metal & Symphonic Metal together here, just so I could include two of my favourite Prog Metal bands: Ayreon & Dream Theater. I'm using your Progressive Metal poll list as a helpful guide too with a little help from Wikipedia.

If you say you are using my list of bands, first I say try and listen to a few songs from each band if you want to see what's it all about, see what you like or what you dislike (and i believe you would like some and dislike some).
Also metal archives and metalmusicarchives are two different sites.

That's good advice. I've been gradually working my way through listening to the debut albums in my Symphonic Metal poll, and so far, I like Aesma Daeva, After Forever, Amberian Dawn, Delain & Ayreon (obviously!), but I'm not so keen on Apocalyptica and Avantasia, so five out of seven ain't bad - if you'll allow me to paraphrase Meatloaf.

I listened to The Beyond for the first time today and it's beyond me why I even added them in the first place as I didn't like them at all, so I've happily deleted them from my listings, making them even more obscure than ever now.

^ I've never heard of Coronatus or Crimson Tears(I will look them up), but the other three are not symphonic metal.
So you've chosen to ignore me.
Symphonic metal is not a progressive metal subgenre, associating these two genre is so messy, it's oranges and potatoes. Makes very little sense.

Symphonic metal and progressive metal are two different things. I thought i made it clear in my previous post. Even within progressive metal, there are different sounds, styles.
So your lists make no sense.

I agree. There's a lot of crossover between Progressive & Symphonic Metal, especially in the case of Ayreon.

In theory, combining the two similar Metal genres together means I get to discover twice as much music. I've only listened to Dimmu Borgir's first album so far, so maybe I was too quick to judge them, based on what Archisorcerus and Logan have since told me, where they become more symphonic as you delve further into their discography. Dimmu Borgir's later albums are almost bound to be an improvement on their dismal first album.

Again, you either are trolling or not paying attention.
Progressive metal and symphonic metal are not similar genres.
Logan and Ozgur listen to a bit of metal, you, not so much.
Dimmu Borgir are symphonic black metal, I very much doubt you're gonna enjoy any of their works. The black metal part of it is always there.

I've never been keen on Death, so I'd be happy to remove it from my listings, but are you seriously suggesting I drop Dream Theater too!?? That's Astonishing! I'll Fall into Infinity before I do that. Removing Dream Theater from my listings would be A Dramatic Turn of Events and would most likely result in Systematic Chaos in the PA forums.

just because you don't like it, it does not mean it's godawful. That's disrespectful on so many levels.
Dream Theater being talked on a symphonic metal thread is just wrong, that's why they don't belong in this thread.
You stubbornly don't listen to anyone. I gave you examples of reliable sites that explain what symphonic metal is, I posted a link for you of list of symphonic metal bands. You chose to ignore it all.
Once you understand the difference between these metal subgenres, you can start making lists, otherwise, you're doing it all wrong.

I got to know a bit about meme culture due to my eldest child. I think I may be too old-fashioned to get the appeal of gifs, emojis, memes and the like. Humph, kids and their lol cats and stuff. I said that that to my eldest (18) and was told off for that being such an old one, people into that are like old like millennials.
So it's from 2007. I used to use an image blocker to block that kind of stuff when it was more popular back in the earlier 2000s. So much of it I find annoying, and sometimes it's meant to annoy, but to each his or her own.

Nice to have a proper conversation you say? but you ignore me completely, so your sentence here is disingenuous.
And here is another proof of you trolling - you have been told REPEATEDLY that Christopher Lee did not play progressive metal, not just by me, but by several people. What Christopher Lee played with metal artists can be called European power metal or epic heavy metal.

No, I mean metal subgenres have their own subgenres
Let's take doom metal, which in the last couple of decades has developed quite a bit.
Traditional doom or epic doom - it's the clasic doom sound that Black Sabbath created and inspired.
Death-doom and melodic death doom - doom metal, with death metal vocals, some bands have female vocals and growls, best example the band Draconian.
Gothic-doom - like Paradise Lost
Stoner and sludge - very hit and miss, especially sludge, but they are doom subgenres.
Drone - a doom subgenre, not my thing though.
Funeral Doom - really slow yet atmospheric doom, with deep growls.
I can name other genres if you want me to.
Or just go to a site like metal storm, they tag genres and subgenres really well.

Some people just don't embrace metal music, or even respect that. Think of it like, someone can tolerate a kissing scene in a movie, but not one with full nudity where people have sex.
