This blog is a celebration of all things Electronica, so whether you're into Jean Michele Jarre, Tangerine Dream, Vangelis, or maybe something a bit more esoteric, then this is the thread for you! There's a whole galaxy of weird and wonderful Electronic Music out there just waiting to be discovered.
What better way to start than with the Masters of Electronic Music: TANGERINE DREAM - Live At The Tempodrome, Berlin (2006)

I've been listening a lot to David Hendry, aka OHEAD. His music has elements of Tangerine Dream, Ozric Tentacles, and Shpongle.

I was quite into Moby in the 90's, along with all manner of house/techno/ambient etc.. I still am, although I've not listened to Moby for years. I saw him live a couple of times back in the day. Great gigs.

My knowledge of Tangerine Dream is not extensive, although I love Rubycon and Phaedra, and quite like the albums that proceeded them. Rubycon Part 1 is incredible. I have a live album 'Logo's' (?) I'll have to dig it out and give it another spin. It's been a while.
What little I heard of their later 'world music' efforts I found a little boring and formulaic, but I may be 'misremembering'
For me, the most enjoyable electronic music came out of the 90's dance music scene; Aphex Twin, FSOL, Global Communication, The Orb et al..

I know what you mean. Brian Eno is the uncrowned king of ambient soundscapes. I'd also recommend the lesser-known Johann Johannsson and Max Richter.

Tangerine Dream are one of the true pioneers of electronic and ambient music, and the albums they recorded for Virgin Records between 1980 and 1983 remain classics of the genre. Off the back of the success of In Search Of Hades, UMC presents this 10CD box set showcasing the next chapter in this period of Tangerine Dream’s history. The box set features newly re-mastered versions of the albums Tangram, Thief, Exit, White Eagle, Logos, Hyperborea along with the previously unreleased soundtracks from the films The Soldier, the 1982 movie directed by James Glickenhaus and The Keep from the 1983 movie directed by Michael Mann, something of a holy grail for Tangerine Dream fans. All audio has been re-mastered from the original master tapes by Ben Wiseman.Pilots of Purple Twilight also features additional previously unreleased material across 4 discs, including the full concert at The Dominion Theatre, London (November 1982). In addition to this the soundtrack to Thief includes an extended promotional only version of “Dr. Destructo”, White Eagle features six bonus tracks recorded for the German television crime drama series Tatort (originally released on a 12-inch single and a 7-inch single in Germany only), all of which are released for the first time on CD and digitally. Finally, Hyperborea includes five bonus tracks originally issued on the Virgin soundtrack LP for the movie Risky Business, including Tangerine Dream’s biggest streaming track, Love On A Real Train.Pilots Of Purple Twilight is lavishly packaged with a hard-back book with a new essay and many rare photographs and memorabilia. 1CD versions of Tangram, Thief, Exit, White Eagle, Hyperborea & Logos will also be released, the audio on these will be from the 2020 remasters and will feature bonus tracks from box.

I reviewed the first page. I think you should give the fourth album another go...Atem! It's the first one by the line-up of Froese, Franke and Baumann (the second was Phaedra)!

Definitely! I'm planning on starting a tribute thread to Tangerine Dream sometime soon where I'll go right back to where it all began with Electronic Meditation, although it might take me several years to listen to and feature all of Tangerine Dream's gazillion albums. It should be a fun ride though. I'll see you there.
By pure coincidence, I've been Rocking Out the Bats with TD in Berlin again tonight, having rediscovered it recently for Logan's Favourite Concerts thread.

It's no surprise that Tangerine Dream came to dominate this thread, so I thought it was about time they had a tribute thread of their own. It was nice to revisit this old thread today though, just to find out which Tangerine Dream concert videos I still have to look forward to viewing again, including:-
Live at the Tempodrome, Berlin (2006)
One Night in Space: Live in Frankfurt (2007)
Orange Odyseey: Live from Lorelei (2007)
The London Eye Concert (2008)
Rocking Out the Bats, Spandau, Berlin (2009)

Hi,
The saddest thing of all is that Linda Spa has not been involved in anything else that we are aware of, and it's not listed anywhere. Makes one think that she just went home to get married and have kids, unsatisfied that she could not stay in TD since one guy doesn't like women and thinks he is the son of Froese ... instead of Jerome, who refused to be a part of the 2nd rate TD since Edgar's passing due to the lack of vision and articulate musicianship rather than just mechanics!
Still nice, but nowhere near the quality of the earlier stuff, and DEFINITELY, the live shows with Linda and Iris were incredible and far out ... and deserve a lot more credit than they are given ... not to mention that the innovation of the old stuff in this new style fit really well and was constructed beautifully!
I imagine that some credit of this is to Linda and her abilities as an arranger and composer, herself, and someone that probably had a good idea of what could be done with a piece of music, instead of just remaining on a riff, or a sound.

Hi,
I have to recheck, but I think that Michael was a part of the same folks that were together in Berlin in the very early days, so he would not have been unfamiliar with TD or how they used their instruments. A natural replacement, however temporary it was to be, which I'm sure that Michael made his stand clear ... he was already busy on his own, and I do not think he wanted his name in the middle of TD albums or compositions.

I expect Michael Hoenig realised there's a lot more money to be made as a solo artist scoring soundtracks in Los Angeles (just like Chris Franke & Paul Haslinger) instead of being part of a trio, even if it's a very successful trio.

It's Not Over Now for Linda Spa, because I read recently that she has a self-composed collection of love songs coming out soon and I also read that her real name is Mad. Gerlinde Spazierer - although her friends just call her Madge, probably.

Heldon are an avant-garde Progressive Electronic band led by Frenchman Richard Pinhas. It may be pure Frippery for me to say this, but Heldon sound like a curious cross between King Crimson, Jade Warrior & Tangerine Dream, although not in a particularly good way.

A-Z Playlist of Progressive Electronica
BRIAN ENO A prolific ambient electronic musician, composer and record producer. He's perhaps best-known for having once been a member of Roxy Music, but he's also worked with a whole string of top-drawer artists, including David Bowie, David Byrne, Harold Budd & Robert Fripp, to name just four. In a long and complicated discography, there are simply too many Brian Eno solo albums to list them all here in one sitting, and so, with No Pussyfooting around and without further ado, I'll begin listing the albums here one by one until I'm through.

It's Not Over Now for Linda Spa, because I read recently that she has a self-composed collection of love songs coming out soon and I also read that her real name is Mad. Gerlinde Spazierer - although her friends just call her Madge, probably.
Hi,
I have written for her a nice poem, which she replied quite gently and perhaps thoughtful that someone would consider writing a poem for her. My hope was to help her light up her imagination and do some music, but I wonder if arranging things is her strongest ability, and I'm not sure that she has developed this into compositions of her own ... and seeing that she STILL has not released anything, would suggest that she is either busy elsewhere, or has given up music for the most part, and it would make some sense that getting on with her personal life would be of interest ... but I think she added something to TD that we did not see before, which Thorsten did not like, or might counter his own idea of how the music should be. If my name was Bianca ... I would have tried to keep the group intact, since they obviously made the music sound so good, and the lineup that followed without Linda and Iris was NOT dynamic and livelier than before, and lacked soul for the most part, and in some ways imagining that the mechanical side of the music would make it as well as the previous material ... well, I tell you what ... I don't remember a single "moment" of any of the new material since Edgar left us, and I think that many folks here feel the same!
At this time, and it is what ... 7 years ... I am not sure that we will be hearing much from Linda Spa ... as sad as that might sound and be! I do think, and maybe this is more my imagination than anything else, that she had a lot more going for her in what she was doing, than the end that she got ... put out to the pasture, ignored and gone.

Hi,
The only thing missing here is the current list of names from the NEW krautrock generation, which is very good and worth the time and place and attention. You can hear many of them on Guy Guden's show, as he is the only one that has a dedicated ear to "Electronica" that most do not have. However, I have to admit, that these days, I miss the longer excursions that Guy Guden gave so many of the folks in your list ... and we're talking complete sides, and even Klaus Schulze got the treatment that no one else will ever show anywhere!

Admittedly, I've never quite got around to listening to Klaus Schulze's albums, but I'll be sure to check them out just as soon as I finish cataloguing all of Tangerine Dream's 150+ albums, which could take awhile.

You surely can't include all of it, but I guess that others are welcome to mention some artists as well.

You might want to check out Zrnho Correy's electronica channel on YouTube. There's lots of good stuff on there to provide inspiration.

thank you, Pedro for the kind words. but I must say, you wouldn't "miss those longer excursions" if you just tuned in more & lasted for the entire show. I play far longer selections now than I ever did in the 70s. the record single artist piece on the Twitch broadcasts was timed out at 1 hour & 15 minutes. last weekend's broadcast featured a new single work of nearly 44 minutes in length. full sides abound on the 4 hour plus broadcast. it is often the 3rd hour that features only one, two or three artists at most. I like to prepare the listeners for a full trip of sounds. now 49 years in, I have never been happier musically with SPACE PIRATE RADIO than with this current incarnation. it's LIVE, Global & uncompromising. and no General Managers or Program Directors wandering into the studios sloshed at 2am. SPACE PIRATE RADIO created the now familiar "space music" type program but has never been painted in the corner by it. I can play 40 minutes of Klaus Schulze, follow it with Heldon & then pop on Martin Denny. can Bladders of Space do that? (*giggles*). freeform radio, man. it's been my style since 1968 (first radio gig) & I can't quit the habit. you were there in 1974, when we were young men. stay poor in useless goods, but rich in purpose. keep living & do all you can to make the world a better place. utopia over dystopia. stay smart & don't dumb it down for approval & profit. please yourself first & you will find your audience. "you're on my wavelength." love & peace, sincerely...

GANDALF Austrian New Age composer Gandalf is a wizard of the guitar and keyboards with an incredible number of albums to his credit running from 1980 thru' to the present day. I've seen Kraftwerk live twice outdoors, both times they were visually and audibly terrible, and thus boring or rather they were irritating. Love their albums but afaic their music doesn't translate well to the stage. Anyone else experienced that live? Maybe they are better at indoor gigs.

I'd always imagined Kradtwerk Live would be as dull and boring as a long drive down the autobahn, so it's no surprise to hear you were underwhelmed by their two outdoor gigs. It's the total opposite with Tangerine Dream though, as I always get a thrill from seeing them perform Live (on YouTube), especially when it includes the sax appeal of lovely Linda Spa is in the TD line-up.

Coming up next...... Jean Michel Jarre!

Jean-Michel Jarre's albums are coming up here next, and just to whet your appetite, here he is Live in Your Living Room with the album where it all began: Oxygene (1976) - although in reality, Jean-Michel's career began four years earlier in a Deserted Palace.

Wow! What an array of synths on that stage!
JMJ was always #1 on my list of prog electronic artists, and still is. I had the good fortune to see him live a few years back on his US tour -- it was quite a show!

Jean Michel Jarre was one of the big three for me of electronic music in the 1970's (alongside Tangerine Dream & Vangelis) . I'm really looking forward to seeing his London Docklands concert again when I eventually get around to listing and listening to all of JMJ's albums (many of them for the first time), but then I thought why wait that long when I can post the concert today - just in time for Teo & Tea.

I listen to it first, and then to the first part as a healing.
Hi,
Not quite for me, although having heard all of this stuff in the early Space Pirate Shows (1974/1975 for example) made it easier to listen to ... you EXPECTED something different, specially in Guy's show that still has the "touch" that most "progressive" folks have no idea what it means, today!
Hearing it some 40 plus years later, too many folks will state that it is different and weird, because they are putting it next to everything else you have heard. When we first heard it, there was not such an incredible number of things to relate it to, so it was way easier to hear it ... specially as you really were hearing some things for the very first time!
AND IT WAS GREAT! Even if different! We don't seem to get that these days!

Thanks. Back in the day, I had the videos for Docklands, Houston, Paris, and China on VHS (which had to be transfered from PAL to NTSC format). Nowadays, it's all on YouTube. This channel ( https://www.youtube.com/user/9thenazeing/videos" rel="nofollow - https://www.youtube.com/user/9thenazeing/videos ) seems to be a treasure trove of Jarre videos.
The China concert in 1981 was notable because he was the first Westerner given permission to hold a concert there.

JEAN MICHEL JARRE French musician Jean Michel Jarre (born 1948) is one of the most successful electronica artists of all time, having performed to a record-breaking audience of over a million people at the Place de la Concorde in Paris in 1979 as well as being the first western musician ever to perform in China. There are simply too many albums in JMJ's long Chronologie to list them all here at once, so I'll edit them in as I go and Rendez-Vous back here later when I'm through.

Just to clear up any potential confusion, the video Paul posted, title
"Concert in China" is part of the "Forbidden City" concert. It is not
the original, ground-breaking 1981 performance which was recorded as
"Les Concerts en Chine" or "The Concerts in China".

Jarre's early albums are good. He peaked a bit early, with Les Chants Magnétiques.
Too bad Jarre hasn't released anything worth paying for in over 25 years.

I thought Metamorphoses and Teo & Tea were both quite good, and worth paying for (which I did). Some of his other recent material smacks of an attempt at "modernizing" his sound to attract a younger audience. I'm not sure it worked.

It's Not Over Now for Linda Spa, because I read recently that she has a self-composed collection of love songs coming out soon and I also read that her real name is Mad. Gerlinde Spazierer - although her friends just call her Madge, probably.

Hi,
I wrote to her a couple of years back and she replied very nicely and thanked me, for the poem. It was a poem about a rose opening up in the sun in the morning. She was surprised that someone would write a poem for her, it seemed to me, however, I am not sure that the feeling reverberated to help her create some new music.
As mentioned, she was an "arranger" and I think that her ability in TD was to make sure that the new orchestrations of the various pieces, with herself first, then Iris included and then the violin, worked well together and that requires someone with a keen sense of touch and feel about music ... which is probably not as strong if you are a composer, as you would be looking at someone else's music. Your "ideas" or "thoughts" would ot be in place when you are putting together your own piece, whereas when you are working on someone else's a lot of the feeling vibrations are already in place and only require to be extended or redefined. And I don't think that she missed very many points with it, not to mention do an excellent job on saxophone and flute, both of which were also utilized within the electronic and symphonic design of things with us not even knowing it, it it was done as a "sample"
I keep hoping to hear from her, but I'm not sure it will happen anymore. Sometimes, waiting for forever is a good thing, but I would not be surprised if she had just about quit it all ... and I have a feeling that she wanted to be personally involved with Edgar and it did not go far enough for her. That's a feeling, not necessarily a reality. He would have been her "mentor" in a lot of ways. And one day, the mentorship was gone like a brick on the wall taking you out for good!
And honestly, I think that TD should have made an attempt to work with her at least one more album or two to see if something could be done, but I wonder if someone's ego felt that she would be in the way with her more symphonic and classically minded style that Edgar favored all of his life, including his experiments!

^ For me, Tangerine Dream's two best eras by far were 1992-1996 and 2005-2014, which just happened to be the two eras when Linda Spa was in the TD line-up.

That doesn't sound very promising. The last JMJ album I bought on CD was Images: The Best of Jean Michel Jarre (1991) and I haven't heard any albums beyond that up until today, so I'll Rendez-Vous back with you later this week when I've listened to them all.

Oxygene 7-13 is where I stop, though I did buy (and eventually sold) AERO. I also "investigated" subsequent releases. Not impressed by the Electronica volumes (though listenable) nor Oxygene 3 and (especially) the dreadful Amazonia. A friend had some unkind words for Oxymore. That's all I'll say about that.

I believe Linda does not intend to collaborate with a post-EF TD.

^ Linda gets off to a bit of a shaky start, but the ending is magnificent! She made me realise just how complex a piece of music Startosfear is and how difficult it is to play on the piano.

Edgar said Linda was a better pianist than saxist.

Just to clear up any potential confusion, the video Paul posted, title
"Concert in China" is part of the "Forbidden City" concert. It is not
the original, ground-breaking 1981 performance which was recorded as
"Les Concerts en Chine" or "The Concerts in China".
Thanks for letting me know. I've since corrected my mistake and the China concert is now in its proper place in the Jean Michel Jarre chronologie.

Hi,
And I wouldn't wish her to (work with TD again), however, as you can see on the piano, why she is such a good ARRANGER and was able to help TD make updates, changes and improve the performances with both herself and then Iris to create a very strong group with magnificent material.
It would not surprise me, to see a piano driven bunch of TD pieces released on a CD, though, something that TD would not be able to stop from happening, not to mention that they would also get a few goodies off it.
A lot of TD's music is very difficult, because there is so much happening at the same time. We just do not have the complete ear for a whole lot beyond a stupid melody, in order to appreciate the completeness and design of the whole thing.
Reminds me of the recent DD thing on TFTO and in one of the pieces (either 3rd or 4th -- have to hear them again), Chris Squire is in the background, really low, and his dancing on an incredible volcano piece of music is understated and at a low level that only a sharp ear can appreciate ... it is, ultimately, incredible and insane, and makes one wonder one thing ... how the fudge does someone create that? It's that insane, and something that 99 out of 100 bass players will never do because they don't have the ear or the ability to add to anything they hear! Linda, for me, was a very important part of what "made" TD work, and I think that Edgar appreciated that a lot.

The laser harp is one of my all-time favorite instruments -- even if it is just a simple MIDI triggering device. The effect is way cool.

Thanks! I watched the concert last night on my big-screen TV. I didn't even need the lights on as JMJ's spectacular light show lit up the entire room.
