Date Posted: October 31 2019 at 02:49
This is the fourth of a 10-part alphabetical poll to determine who's the greatest guitarist of all time across all genres of music. When the results have all come in, I'll put the top two winners of each of the ten polls into a face-off poll to determine the overall winner of the Top 100 guitar heroes. An easy choice this time - Jimi Hendrix! The Top 100 Guitar Heroes list is supplied courtesy of Guitarist Magazine

Ideally, I'd like to have voted for Jimi Hendrix, Tony Iommi and Steve Howe all at the same time.

I had to go Iommi as well, although it's pretty hard not pulling the trigger for either Allan Holdsworth or Eric Johnson (and to a lesser degree Howe and Hendrix).
As for those who would have made my personal list for this stretch of the alphabet, there's: Jim Hall Eddie Hazel Steve Hillage Jimmy Johnson

I don't know whether you've read any of my previous replies to you, but I'll mention it again anyway - Frank Zappa is coming up in the tenth and final poll.

I would have included Steve Hillage too if it had been my own personal choice of guitar heroes.

Holdsworth broke boundaries and was an innovator. No guitarist will ever be in the same league as him. He not only could outplay everyone in this poll, he was a terrific composer. Allan was not a show off, he was humble and always downplayed his stellar performances. Can't say that about most others in this poll.

It's good to see at least two other PA members appreciate Allan Holdsworth too, because he's currently in joint first place with Jimi Hendrix on three votes each.

so sorely tempted to vote for Steve Howe...
but even more deeply imprinted in my musical DNA than the many examples of Howe's brilliance....
Jimi's Live at Winterland album.. and one song....Killing Floor...
that.. that is what rock guitar was all about in all its fury and multitude of colors.... forever and for always will be #1 on the Mick list of greatest blow thy speaker songs ever recorded... oh yeah.. there was Jack Casady .. inspiring and pushing him to greater heights like no one else could. The ultimate aural orgasm that is.. umm hmmm..

Tough bracket, gotta go with Holdsworth.
No Michael Hedges. I guess this is exclusively electric players.
Where is poll 1 and 2?
I see this is Guitarist magazine's list so it is bound to be pretty mainstream, exclusively North America and UK (with some West European outliers). The top 20 or so of my favorites are bound to be poorly represented.

Polls 1 & 2 are in this same forum, although they may have dropped back to Page 2 by now.

Well, alphabetical order screwed us a little because 7 out of 10 guitarists here could potentially come out on top IF he was named Boobie or Tatty.
I have to go with Steve Howe because I believe he has the best balance between technical mastery, songwriting skills and pushing boundaries of rock guitar. He lacks a bit in influence and his music wasn't really built around Riffs, but he certainly had terrific vision - never went with the easiest formulas and most of his licks are quite uncomfortable to play... doesn't matter for that guy, apparently

I was planning to vote for Jimi Hendrix, but decided to do a bit of tactical voting and opted for Steve Howe instead to make sure he goes through to the final face-off round alongside Jim Hendrix.

It's hard enough to choose sometimes when there are only ten guitarists in the poll, but imagine how hard it's going to be to choose in the final face-off round when there at least 20 top guitarists in the poll. That's why I've decided to allow multiple voting in the final deciding poll for the ultimate guitar hero.

Almost went with Holdsworth but then I saw Eric Johnson on the bottom of the list. I always felt EJ was the perfect combination of chops, feel & style. He may not be as technically proficient as Holdsworth but I think he makes up for it in other areas so EJ gets my vote.

As much as I love the guitar playing of Johnson and Holdsworth (and appreciate the influence many of the others had), I just have to go with Steve Howe as my favorite on that list.

Great to see Eric finally get a vote! I would add that, having seen him live a few times in addition to owning everything he's recorded, I don't see him as lagging anyone, Holdsworth (who I have the utmost respect for) included, technically. EJ's fretboard wizardry can stand aside anybody's.
