I'm not a practicing programmer myself. I have read tons of books on the topic, though. So, it's just sort of a hobby to me. As a theoritician, not practician  I can say I like Ada, Modula-2, Classic C (before C99), Assembler, C-- . My job involves only a little bit of programming when needed. I primarily use the AutoIt scripting language and write up XSLT crosswalks for transforming one metadata schema to another, usually some form of XML or Dublin Core to MARCXML. Occasionally I have written macros using Visual Basic for Applications. A long, long time ago in college, I wrote things in FORTRAN 77, Pascal, C, C++, COBOL, Rexx, and took one course on assembly language. This was back in the early 1990s. Needless to say, I haven't used any of these since then. ------------- ---------- i'm shopping for a new oil-cured sinus bag that's a happy bag of lettuce this car smells like cartilage nothing beats a good video about fractions |

| I'm currently studying to be a computer programmer/web developer. My experience so far has been limited to mostly html, css and javascript. Out of all of those javascript is the only real computer language but it's the most interesting out of the three anyway. I haven't delved very deep into any others but plan on learning python at some point(from the little I looked at it it seems pretty similar to javascript although maybe not as complicated). |

Great song  Professional coder here. I haven't used any of those languages since my formative years. I've been coding mostly in C# and Java. I've been asked that many times on job interviews and I'm of the opinion that the context of the project is a lot more important than the language I write in.

The song is 5-star. Speaking of programming humour, or rather programmers' humour, there are two modern day jokes in Russian. First, for unknown to me historical reasons, Russian computer specialists used the German word "brandmauer" for what is known in English as "firewall" for a long time. There's a joking patriotic one-sentence monologue: Why use the foreign word "firewall" when there's a native word "brandmauer"? Second, in Russian "ad" means "hell", "ada" is the genitive case of the noun "ad". That is, "ada" means "of hell", "hell's". Python. Easy to learn, hard to master. I am also looking (from a far) at the amazing 'R'. I may dip my toe in the water to give it a try some time in the future.

I use Java and Python for the daily work (XSLT also). Both are favorites of mine, specially Python for its ease of use, but I think Java is very elegant and consistent too. Still I think is a good combination, Java for a typed language and Python for scripting (in my case). I also once came across the D language.. I thought it was cool.. sort of like a C++ improved / with some twists. |

That's what they say about learning to play the guitar too. Also, I would think that could be applied to javascript as well but so far parts of it are imo not easy to learn. I can't imagine python being anymore difficult to master than javascript. Apparently though once you learn one language you can easily learn others. I guess practice is key.

| I was a programmer years ago and used COBOL. If I were doing it now, I'd want to use some version of C or Pascal. But for pure fun, nothing beats assembler languages! |

I'm following a course on Python right now, it really feels like I've been missing out for all these years...Not so much for what I can do with it (not much) but for the general insight into how software is made. I'm hoping to learn more languages eventually. -------------
