Subject: Classic British Hard Rock Poll

I included Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden & Judas Priest in the poll even though they're primarily Heavy Metal bands, because I don't think their fans would forgive me if I'd left them out of the poll.

With Led Zeppelin in the Poll - don't have to read the other, no one would come close anyway.

I moved this from Prog Polls to General Music Discussions because it does not focus on British Progressive Hard Rock (like ones that would be found in our Heavy Prog category).
I didn't sit this one out, as I love Cream, and actually have wanted it in PA, but am not getting into that again. I would have liked to see Gun, Black Widow, and Atomic Rooster included amongst others, and likely would have given one of those my vote.

I'm sorry I couldn't include Atomic Rooster, Black Widow or Gun as I'd already used up all 25 poll options and I knew I'd have to leave some important bands out of the poll. I could swap Atomic Rooster for the Baker Gurvitz Army though, and Black Widow for Budgie.

Lots of good bands here. I went with The Who.

I knew this poll would be relocated. It was interesting to see how long it would stay in the prog section though. Anyway, my favorites would be Deep Purple, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath. I consider the last two to be heavy metal though.

I find you changing the poll options infuriating. Are you sucking up to the people who may not be pleased with your options? Because this is not how it works. The displeased ones can start their own poll (it rarely happens).
So please leave the polls like they are.
And you take the amazing Budgie out? Now that was a no-brainer...

Almost all worthy contestants. I'll sit this one out. I simply refuse to choose between The Who, Black Sabbath, and Iron Maiden.

^^^^^ I wouldn't suggest it. Gotta have Budgie, and Baker Gurvitz Army are great.
I don't usually use an "other' option, but say "vote for your favourite of the listed choices, and mention that in a post, but please also mention any other favourites". Of course when the question is "Who's Your Favourite Classic British Hard Rock Band?" without an "of these" addendum, and it's not one of the options available then it might be seen as wrong to vote for any of the options.
I would have removed Def Leppard and Bad Company as neither have I thought of as remotely progressive hard rock, but maybe I know neither well enough. Nor Samson either... That said, when I do polls I tend to focus on my favourites, which may not be others. And if you weren't big enough on Gun, Atomic Rooster, or Black Widow to include them, well it's your poll and I think better polls tend to reflect the most on the OP's taste. I would rather people stick more to ones they like and love when making polls (also helpful in discussion about the acts if the OP knows and cares about all of the choices).
I personally never care about poll results, but I do discover new-to-me ones thank to my polls and other people's polls quite often. If my poll reflects my tastes then I'm more likely to hear about related ones that I will enjoy.

Do you REALLY think so? Why would a -for instance- Judas Priest band never forgive you because you didn't include them on a "classic hard rock" poll? I guess none would do that, conversely some might get offended and shout: "Judas Priest is METAAAAAL!" Nice list, yet for example I would add The Rolling Stones, instead of Samson or Saxon. Not only TRS are more popular, but also they are more "classic" and "rock", as your title suggests.
I'll go with Deep Purple.

Good idea! I'll swap Samson for The Rolling Stones.
It was a case of trying to please everyone at once by including the three Heavy Metal bands, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden & Judas Priest.

I am a big classic hard rock fan, and there are so many favourites in this poll that I find it hard to choose one. However, I went for Deep Purple, who to me are the quintessential HR band (even more so than Led Zeppelin). While I am OK with Judas Priest and Black Sabbath being included here on account of their early albums, I wouldn't have included any of the NWOBHM bands (Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Saxon and Samson). If you include those, I believe Motorhead should be mentioned too. And, if Hawkwind are included, High Tide should as well. Their debut album Sea Shanties is heavier than most of Hawkwind's output.
Posted By: Odvin Draoi

It is okay to include them. It would be perfectly reasonable to omit "classic", though. As heavy metal is more adventuresome and too odd to be "classic" in the rock genre. As I said, this is not a big deal as heavy metal emerged out of rock and use too many rock elements, with twists. I just made a realistic humour of some probable prospective reactions you may get from JP fans.

It's always tricky deciding who to include and who to leave out in these artist polls, especially when using all 25 available options. I could include Motorhead, but then I'd have to delete another band from the poll to create an empty slot for Motorhead.

If Tull can win a Grammy for best Metal/Hard rock album, then surely the Kinks belong as well!!!
In all seriousness, I get ya'. But think about when they dropped "You Really Got Me" in in '64--they were pretty much the progenitors of hard rock, even punk and to some extent, metal. And while they were never hard rock through and through, there's some genuine hard rock on pretty much every album in their very vast discography.
But no, overall, they don't stand alongside the likes of Purple, Heep & Zep in that category.

I will propose another one - even (proto?) heavy metal band Jerusalem with album from 1972 - hard rock killer!

Well, you can hear them say "cocaine" in the song. When I saw them play it on their farewell tour Ozzy said "cocaine" loud enough so that there was no mistaking it.

Top 10 out of these bands, roughly:
01. Led Zeppelin 02. Deep Purple 03. Black Sabbath
04. Uriah Heep 05. Rainbow 06. Hawkwind 07. Cream 08. Wishbone Ash 09. Atomic Rooster 10. The Who
Honorable mentions: Black Widow, Whitesnake Not considered: Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Saxon
So I decided to exclude bands I consider NWOBHM primarily because, to me, it feels like a completely different era. I'd rather have Budgie in the mix, or maybe Foreigner ;p
Top 3 is set in stone, sometimes Black Sabbath gets the first spot, so as Deep Purple, but generally those three distanced themselves from the rest, if you ask me. I know it's a popular opinion in the web now, but I can't help it - perhaps these 3 are so good that we all come to a similar conclusion.
The rest of the pack has between 3 and 5 albums that I find interesting, like I said I don't listen to music as much as I had in high school/college days, so it's been a few years since I've heard Space Ritual or Quadrophenia... but I'm pretty certain about this order.
I admire Whitesnake for Coverdale's voice and premium musicians in their lineup, but their later releases remind me too much of dreaded/formulaic hair metal... Black Widow had a great debut, but I don't remember any song from later releases.
All the rest seemed a bit same-y, generic, with a "try-hard-to-be-edgy" approach... correct me if I'm wrong. Maybe there is a terrific album somewhere in Status Quo or Nazareth catalogue and I'm talking outta my ass.

Indeed. A once proud bluesy hard rock outfit that descended into the commercial abyss with the likes of Warrant, Ratt, and Cinderella. I could never vote for them overall based on how they finished.
As an aside, IMO Burn is a top Deep Purple album, largely on the strength of Coverdale's performance.

I'm quite selective when it comes to hard rock, but I really like Cream and Deep Purple (mark 2 and 3) - the latter epsecially because of the classical touch in some of their songs. Not sure if I would count the Rolling Stones as hard rock.
As for the Who, I think I liked them more before their sound turned heavy. Who's Next and Quadrophenia are really great works, but personally I find their 60's work (up to, and including Tommy) a little more interesting. They became louder after Tommy, but louder doesn't necessarily mean better in my world. Also, Roger Daltrey's "screaming" in the 70's can be a bit too much.
I do like Led Zeppelin, but actually I find them rather overrated. In all these eternal 'greatest rock band' polls they are almost always up there in the top, but I can think of many rock musicians who have made much more interesting and original music.

I am not suprised at all, both bands are the most known to today´s listeners, although many of these are lot better (I prefer Sabbath, Cream, Hawkwind, Stones and the Who from those, also I think Family was doing really much same thing as Zeppelin in the same time but lot better, I really would hope people listen more those bands than Zeppelin or Purple).
